I did the same run on that volcano (Cerro Negro near Leon in Nicaragua) last year on a "sled" (a piece of wood with tin on the bottom).

I'd do it on a downhill bike with at least 8" of travel front and rear and 24" wheels. The middle section is about 500ft of straight grade but with pits and bumps (sort of like ski moguls, but irregular), some about a foot deep. That dude probably hit one too many of those.

The photo is of my feet right after sledding.
