Fed up O20

Yes, I said it. I wish Orange 20 had better customer service. It just seems that unless you know them personally or suck up to them, you just won't get good customer service. Don't get me wrong, I used to love the place, but in the recent months, I've got nothing but bad service. I go there expecting good quality, I go there expecting they can do what I need. All I get is a bunch of NO's. I would rather give Echo Park Cycles or El Maestro my business. It seems like expanding has given O20 a big head.

When I bent my fork, it took FOREVER to get a new one. When they installed it, everything was loose (should have done it myself, it turns out).I went in there a month or two ago asking for a chain. Nothing. I went in the other day to exchange some lights. They gave me a hard time. My dad needed a new axel this week... they couldn't give us one because they were "too busy" and said to "come back after the holidays" dude, what is that, another week or so? He wasn't going to wait a week to ride his bike when he could just go get an axel somewhere else.

I disagree entirely... based on my experience. I think they're always cool about shit, but maybe i'm a little different kind of customer. just recently they knocked a headset out for me, and didn't charge.
they are too overpriced, but Jim will try to price match online... remember they work under a different cost structure though.
My question: why are you complaining when nearly everything bike related is do-it-yourself.
People are fickle... one day they love you, the next you're scum. Oh well, they seem to be doing good for themselves, so good for them.
With the bike related questions that usually come up here, you can imagine their frustrations.
for one, you know how much they will pay for an item before they order it... so you have the freedom to say "no thanks". All i can say is that Ive been in and out of the shop since the beginning and its not a do-it-yourself shop. They made a name catering to the Bike Kitchen crowd.... tons of kids were pimping their rides for ridiculous amounts of dough....
020 is like most bike shops... they need $$$$ to stay in business and mail order makes it that much harder.... its the paradox of bicycle kitchen.

this is exactly why i'm complaining. they don't seem care for the do-it-yourself crowd. mainly because they can't charge them exorbitant fees for installation. if i had taken the wheel and and told them i wanted them to install axles cones that matched the hub onto a new axle, they would have been nicer, yeah. they'd still take over a week though. but i went in knowing exactly what i wanted and they act like it's way too much work for them. fuck that. i'm not a sucker.

It's easy to care about bigger causes and easy to be good when lots of people are watching. It's what you do when no one is giving you brownie points that really matters.
Their customer service blows, and what I should have done is taken a moment to speak with the manager when confronted with poor service.
I don't care if shit is overpriced, that's what I expect at a bike shop. Sorry Graham... but a business is created to cater to a certain audience, in this case bicycle riders. Would it not be in your best interest to give your ultimate best customer service to each and every single one of those same riders coming in? One day I might go in to buy just a light... the next day I might want a nice expensive frame. Will they treat me the same if I came in just to buy the light than if I came in with $$ on my eyes and dollars dripping out of my pockets? No. They wouldnt. And that's what's sad. They're dicks and there's no two ways about it.
And yes... I do know how to run a legitimate and profitable business.

I actually *stopped* going to I.Martin and *started* going to O20 because of customer service issues. I had one semi-reasonable, decent experience at I.Martin, but nothing earth-shattering, then one where someone made me feel kinda stupid (excuse me for being a new rider & being really freaked out that someone had knocked me over with their car & wanting to make sure things were ok on my bike...) and then one final one that was simply terrible. So I went to O20 to check it out & they've been so damn nice to me every single time. Asking me if I've been helped, if I needed anything, had any questions about anything.
I'm a *big* customer service person, so I'm sad that Chynna & other folks have had such bad experiences here. They are always so nice to me. i will be more observant on my visits there, but still...my experience has always proven so helpful & good. :/

Please, I volunteer at Bikerowave. I've worked in customer service on & off for the past six years.
I know shitty customer service from good customer service because I've been shitty customer service & I've been good customer service. Yeah, some customers suck, and ask dumb questions, and it's annoying as fuck, but you gotta put yourself in the newb position and remember all the dumb questions you asked. Also, it feels better to be nice to someone, and anytime I was shitty to someone, I felt bad, unless they were a real douche....
As a result, I try my best to be super super polite to retail employees. I know it's tough as hell. So when the folks at O20 sucked, it was mildly heartbreaking, cause I felt like I'd been nice, and not exactly a newb either (Anymore), I felt like I was trying to ask reasonable questions...but they were just kinda...rude.

When I brought it in for a tune up, they replaced my frayed brake cable and didn't charge me. They've performed all sorts of repairs on the spot & charged me nothing. They've even special ordered stuff for me.

By the sounds of it this O20 place is sounding like an all-around dick.
I could understand when one is having a shit-day and you just walked in on them, but this sounds like selective snobbery at it's best.
We used to only have 2 bike shops up here in the desert, but over the last couple of years, 3 more have opened up in different parts of the desert in general reaction to the "selective catering" of the forerunner shops, and to keep business in the desert.
The three new shops are fairly plugging along, but they seem to be carrying all the general supplies dedicated to normal cycling.
The other two shops seem to notice this competition and are now moving up to the level of "hit or miss".

Its true, with more stuff and more employees, the O has gotten pretty crazy.
Actually from day 1 the O has been pretty jammin' and while shopping there I've always had to excercize a fair amount of patient. My reward has been getting to see them grow and expand from a little shack to a grassroots bicycle super store.
I'll admit, I haven't had that much money to spend on bike stuff lately, but when I do, O20 always treats me real nice. They built my first fixie. I've DJed parties for them, and I know all the regulars by name ... still when I go in I have to wait my turn like everybody else.
Its true that O20 is a bit hectic (the curse of success) for a more homey/ fam fam environment, you can't do better than EP Cycles. Not nearly as much selection, but great work and great help.

On the prices i have to say one more thing O20 rarely carries cheap shit.
Its more expensive to do stuff they because they cater to people who ride alot and don't want to be dealing with the same problem in 6 months.
I bought the cheapest single speed wheel-set they had over a year and a half ago. than those wheels are still rock solid. i have trued them once in a year and half. I don't baby them either. I'n all I spent about $500 putting my fixie conversion together with them. After a year they only thing I've had to do, maintenance wise is change my tires.
I know I can go as cheap as possible there. and get good honest stuff.
I won't argue with anybody that wants to go to EP Cycles. They are awesome too and they always can use the business since their location is not exactly in people's faces.

O20's OK.
I think they're just having a hard time managing people's expectations, in that they've gone from a small local shop tbat offers the new bikes / parts that the Bike Kitchen doesn't, to a pretty successful business offering a fair range of bikes and parts and pulling in a fair bit of revenue.
In that transition, there are going to be the occasional growing pains. I haven't bought much there, as their prices tend to be slightly high and I don't need much help installing things, but their staff has always been courteous and helpful when I've been in there. Obviously, with WAY more customers to deal with, they're not going to have the same level of time that a bike shop that has 4-5 people a day walk through the door might.
Every bike shop, like EVERY other customer service business, is going to have its good and bad days, and will screw up every once in a while.
It does seem like they need to get a little more consistent though, judging from the comments here and on yelp.

hmmm, i have not had great experiences at most LBS... it seems that patience is a requirement for people with bicycle problems... which is not cool if you only have one bicycle and need it immediately... and as someone stated, if they know you the employees at the LBS provide you with better service... that is what i have encountered.... when I go in on a consistent basis then I receive better attention... i have actually seen them stop working on other bicycles to attend to mine... but if you stop going for awhile and you come back then they make you feel guilty for not coming in more often.... It is understandable since they need the customers....
O20.... hmm, i have been there a couple of times... i find their stuff awesome and expensive but do not be afraid to ask for lower end products... that is what i do and they have been able to accomodate me...they just do not have those lower end products on display... since I tend to have to wait at any bicycle shop, i find their customer service standards equivalent to other shops....

O20 to me is a hit or miss.. Yes there are overpriced. But they do have things there that most bike shop don't have as stated above. They have there off days as far a customer service. One day they can be very helpful and they do help you out the best they can. Other days they can straight up ignore you. I still continue to shop there and support them.
Recently I've been going to a very overlooked bike shop in the Eastside/Hollywood area.
Safety Cycles on Western and Santa Monica.. There prices are very reasonable and they customer service is top notch. There the only "mom and pop" bike shop that I know of and it feels like a real bike shop.. Meaning they don't have cool trendy indie music blaring, and there shop is scattered with all sorts of bikes and tools.. I've always gone there and they treat me very well. When I told them my bike was stolen and they took about 300 dollars off the sale price!

We've seem to have lost focus on what Chynna was referring to in her original post. The customer service. Not the hard to find parts or the workmanship. Customer service and their lack thereof.

the only thing i ever buy at o20 is tubes. I like that they are 5 bucks flat... are they still? havent bought one in a while...lol but thats about it.. i don't like the way that everyone in there seems to just look at your every movement, makes me feel uncomfortable..

I went there for the first time with a buddy during the fall. They gave us the worst customer service and snotty ass attitudes. When we left, my buddy was bitching when we left and was like... "You think being in graduate school would get you some respect around here... especially from a part time Shop Clerk." LOL. Guess Not. I live in the neighborhood and pass by there every day but I buy all my gear at Metropolis in NOHO. They are super nice and have always treated me with respect. I'm not sure its a brown vs. white thing at O20, but now I'm starting to pay more attention.

Personally I have no idea why anyone would buy anything big at an LBS. Same items for cheaper online. The only appeal that a neighborhood shop has is when you just love the workers there and you WANT to give them your money to make sure they stay in business. Thats the way I feel about Beverly Hills Bike Shop on Robertson. They treat me great, give me discounts that I don't have to ask for, and make my bikes sing.
I've had only good experiences at O20.

Maybe bike techs do not make good customer service orientated sales people but every time I've been to O20 I've been dealt with fairly. Are their prices over priced? I don't know. They are cheaper than online but online dealers have little overhead, They seem reasonable to me.

Not gonna read this whole thread, but I totally agree with chynna's first assessment. I needed a chain for a single speed project and was tight on time, so I headed to O20, laid out my requirements and was sold a chain that was too short. Didn't have time to fix it, so I ended up showing the bike with no chain. I haven't tried to return it yet, but the packaging is long gone, although I still have my receipt. I'm eager to see if they're gonna work with me on the return.

O20 can dish out an overwhelming energy both positive and negative. Business for them is good and theyre location is prime...they cater to a lot of people. That being said, if youve had a bad experience there like myself try familiarize yourself there and they will begin to know n take care of you and your project. They can be high-priced but then again its good quality/durable shit, i dunno about you but i pay extra $ for less hassle long lasting and original product. If anyone can remember what it was like goin into a skate or surf shop they'll tell you its the same thing...personally i acted like i didnt give a shit about them or scoff at back at them and i ended up getting my service.Other times i would call ahead when i felt like they were gonna be busy -im referring to all shops ive been to in need of a service whether it was in a skate/surf shop as a grom, or even bike shop ( as,yes, a newb at one time too). i can see where you guys are coming from but my response is if your into their product and style then localize yourself with them and get ready with questions beforehand...cause thats really what its about. sad but its true. you gotta build buisness relations. i do feel for you guys that have had bad experiences though. also keep in mind that they do deal with a lot of newbs trolls posers and they like so theyre probably having a long day and assuming your one too... not that this is excusable cause its not. people gotta find peace in their hearts and im talking business owners...not everyone has to be gutless to stay in business. if they treat you like shit then treat them like shit.
