Thread Box:

Thread started by animal at 10.13.08 - 8:09 pm

i want to do it, but is it a hardcore ride? have any of you ever ridden down there? enlighten me.

reply

It's a pretty straight route, and almost all flat. Except for a big climb up Torry Pines. that's 1point something miles of good climbing, but there is a screaming downhill right after the climb.

Here's my route from Union Station to SD.
Distance is about 135 miles.

The great Los Angeles to San Diego Route Slip!

Left onto Alameda from the front of Union Station
Left on 2nd Street, go a short distance
Right on Santa Fe, go about 3 miles
Left on Pacific, Pacific curves to the right, go1/2 mile
Left on Leonis, go about 2 miles
Leonis at some point becomes District
Cross Atlantic and then some RR tracks
Left onto the L.A. River bike path, right after Atlantic
Right on bike path (you can’t go left very far)
Go about 5 miles to Imperial Hwy. It is important that you cross Imperial and pick up the path on the east side of the river here. Just before Imperial, you will go under the 710 freeway and notice the convergence of the Rio Hondo River into the L.A. River. Imperial is the next under pass. Go under Imperial, then make a U turn onto the sidewalk and cross the bridge and enter the bike path on the east side of the river. Continue on the bike path another 12 miles until it ends at the Long Beach shore line.
Left onto the first street you come to, a short distance
Right on Ocean Blvd, go about 5 miles to PCH (along the way Ocean becomes Second street)
Right onto PCH-You will be on PCH a long ass way from here. The name changes several times, but just stay on Highway 1, no matter the name!
After going through Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, Dana Point and San Clemente, you finally get to south San Clemente and Highway 1 ends at Christianitos.
Right on Christianitos over the 5 freeway a very short distance
Left onto the bike path, the bike path takes you through a campground along an old highway road in San Onofre several miles to a T intersection, go left to get to Camp Pendleton Main Gate, go right to get to the bicycle OK freeway onramp, exit freeway or Camp Pendleton in Oceanside. It’s about 5 miles on the freeway, and 7 or 8 miles through Pendleton. Pendleton is much more scenic, just watch out for tanks!
Resume going south on highway 1 in Oceanside-watch the cars here, there is very little shoulder for bikes for a few miles.

A long time later, after you go through Del Mar, you will climb some mild rolling hills. This is a warm up. Just after these hills you will climb a nice steep grade for about 2 miles. This is Torry Pines. You’ll know it when you get there. You’ll have already done over 100 miles by now!
At the top of Torry pines, you have less than a mile to reach another T. You have less than 20 miles to go from here!
Left onto Genesee and down a BIG hill. 40 MPH plus, baby!! Go about 2 miles
Right on Regents, go 1 ½ miles
Right on Arriba, very short
Left on Palmilla, go ½ mile
Right on La Jolla Colony, go ½ mile, just after a 90 degree bend, there is an intersection, do not go through the intersection, go to the left side of the road and enter the bike path, follow the path several miles until it dumps out onto Santa Fe, keep going south on Santa Fe about 2 miles
Left on Damon, under the 5 fwy. A short distance
Left on Mission Bay Drive, going through a bay side park. The road will bear left after several miles and become Pacific Highway. Go over the 5 fwy. And stay on Pacific Highway several miles until you reach downtown San Diego.

Torry pines isn't the only hill as you will find quite a bit of rolling hills before torry pines. I suggest you try 40-60 miles in one day and see how you feel. (should take you 6 hours or less to do it.)

well, torey pines is the epic climb, there's some decent hills in the beaches area of the OC before you hit camp pendalton, then you get to ride on an abandoned airstrip and the freeway. it's a pretty rockin ride.

i ride 15 miles a day, sometimes more. about 100 miles in a week. i have a feeling that's not enough for such an epic ride. maybe i should wait until the next one...

Were you thinking of doing it alone? Most of it is not bad, just long.
Maybe if you split it in to two days and made a weekend of it. train back on Sunday or something.
Let me know if you are seriously going to do it and I'll help you out where I can. I live in SD.

OR OR OR, we could just get another LA2SD ride going and make it official! ! ! ! Huh Huh Huh???? Nudge Nudge!!!!!!

I 'll repost Creative Thing's slip with the modified ending that we actually used last time we went down. It avoids some hills and is way easier. It also cuts about 1.5 to 2 miles off. It makes it 130.3 station to station. Believe me, by the time you get to SD, you won't care about a mile or two.
Hope this helps.

continue south on PCH
When you come out of Del Mar, the name changes to N. Torrey Pines road.
This is the largest hill of the trip, but don't sweat it. Go up the hill
From the top of the hill, go ½ mile to intersection of N. Torrey Pines Road and Genesee Ave. (road starts to drop down hill)
GO RIGHT on to N. Torrey Pines. (edge of UCSD campus).
Go ½ mile to intersection of N. Torrey Pines and Torrey Pines.
GO STRAIGHT through intersection, then down off ramp on right to Gilman Dr.
Take Gilman down hill. At the bottom, go under the 5 freeway bridge.
On the right just past the bridge is a bike path that parallels the freeway.
Bike path dumps out on to Santa Fe Dr.
Santa Fe Dr. to Damon Ave.
Right on Damon Ave.
Left on Mission Bay Dr.
MBD turns in to East MBD at the zig zag stop sign. EMBD turns in to PCH.
At PCH and Sea World Dr. Go straight through and over the 5 freeway.
Turn left on Taylor St., cross trolley tracks.
Right on Congress St. at light.
Right on San Diego Ave.
Right down Noell St. (be carefull shitty condition at bottom of hill)
Left on Hancock St.
Hancock becomes Kettner Blvd.
Take Kettner straight in to Downtown.
If you are going to the train station, it is on Kettner and Broadway on the right. Santa Fe station.
