i would only be able to do like thursday-monday and tickets are looking like $400. so im on the fence.
vandrew is under new ownership, whether or not they could take my tall bike is a big factor in my decision

Oh man, me wants in...
Pardon for being incredibly ignorant, but I can't seem to find anything about tickets except the 'badges'...and the 'music' badge is...$750?! Is that just to get into the day events, and the music at night is open to all, or is there a live-music-only ticket option that is less absurdly priced?

You don't need a badge. There are plenty of non-badge shows. TONS. More than you can possibly go to. Most performers do several sets on various days, at various venues and so you can pretty much catch whoever you want (except for some really big names, admittedly -- but that is not the reason to go to SXSW).
Here's the thing I will warn you about though: because everyone is doing several sets (often in a single day) and every show has a really long lineup, waiting for the band you want can be really painful and the band's set will then usually be really, really short. And sometimes they are super tired (I caught the Vivian Girls' 7th set of the day -- though those girls were fucking troopers). Oh, and the crowds generally suck. Not even so much that it is crowded -- though often it is -- but just that they are drunken douchebags.
Basically, unless you're one of those people who like big festivals and the like, it is kind of the absolute worst environment in which to see music.
ON THE OTHER HAND: because there are so many shows happening and everything is behind schedule and you never quite know if you are at the right place at the right time, you can accidentally end up at the PERFECT place at the PERFECT time and catch some band that you have never heard of before that blows your mind. This is what SXSW is supposed to be about and it happened to me at least twice while I was there.
In short: don't worry about a badge.

Oh, the other thing: while there is a master list of all the official (read: badge-requiring) shows on the SXSW website, you'll have to dig up a list of the "unofficial" shows. I forget who did that the year I went (it certainly wasn't me), but it was very helpful.

Currently I'm scheduled to quit my job 4/2 but if I burn a few bridges and leave a couple weeks early I could make this trip. That is if things get figured out in time for me to give 2 weeks
