Ride Leaders
Thread started by Ninja biker at 09.19.10 - 9:54 pm

Hey I got an idea for ride leaders.
Just to cut down on the assholes how about they print out ride rules and give them out to the newbies?

A Slightly modified version of the Rulezz of the Ride but you can also add your own or make it up.
Print this out:

Ride Rules
Stay out of the left lane. JOIN the party on the right.
We get one single un-obstructed lane and we maintain this lane until the route changes direction.

Don't Litter.
There's nothing that hurts our reputation quite like the mess of trash that invariably gets left behind at every rest stop we make. Please show respect for the neighborhood and for the small businesses by picking up after yourself and your friends.

Make some noise!
Bicycle riders need to be notified of dangers. Potholes, cracks, railroad tracks... They can all cause serious injury. When a rida observes any such hazzards in the road they speak up and pass the message back. "Pothole to the right! Pass it back!" "Stop ahead!" "Slowing down slowing down!" All of these signals help keep the beast moving along SAFELY.

No Rida Left Behind.
Make some contacts while getting ready at the start. It is EXTREMELY important to have your bicycle in good working order before you ride. Bring a flat fix kit, tubes and tools. You owe it to yourself to be prepared. And if you happen to see a lone rida stranded on the side, use that opportunity to make a new friend and help them out... No rida left behind.

Maintain your position. Ride straight, ride predictably!
Some cyclists have no regard for those behind or in front of them. We've all seen them, they weave back and forth, speed up and slow down amongst a crowd of bikers and generally ride in a dangerous and aggressive manner... This type of behaviour is the number one cause of accidents and injury. If this is how you ride.... DON'T RIDE WITH US

Slowing down or stopping? Move CAUTIOUSLY to the right!
If you as an individual have to suddenly slow down or you need to stop and the ride is moving along, call out "SLOWING DOWN!" or "STOPPING!" PLEASE move as quickly as possible to the right and out of the way BEFORE you begin your slow down. Make sure you aren't cutting someone off in the process!

Check each other
If you see a knucklehead throwing a bottle or littering simply call that person out. It's called community shaming. When everyone participates, it really works.

And make sure they understand and are willing to follow the rules before riding out.
If they can't then tell them that they can't ride with us.
This is your Ride and making sure that everyone knows what's up is your responsibility.

people already tried that. it failed

How?
Why did it fail?
When was this?
I never got pamphlets on any of the rides I've been on.
Or told me the rules.
If you don't tell the noobs then they wouldn't know what they are doing wrong.

hmmm, ride leaders have a lot to be concerned about... what type of ride they want to establish, the route, the stops, what type of stops, how long are those stops, to regroup or not to regroup.... and so much more....

your suggestion are great, however, all those suggestions to make rides better should be handled by the community.... Printing costs money and leaders may or may not have access to get those copies made...plus, now you are setting up potential thrash in itself.... the experienced community needs to step up... sure there are new riders, however, the experienced riders should out number new riders... lead by example.... all experienced riders need to pick up after themselves and be vocal to new riders on holding their line and riding in a group....

putting all the responsibility on the leaders is a bit unfair...it is up to everyone in the community as a whole to work together...the leaders are not babysitting and should not be babysitting young adults and adults....

It's not even every ride that you give it out.
Only when you see new faces.
Is that too much work?

I get that and with every ride I go on the leader has my support .
I'm saying is that it is their ride and the the burden of responsibility will always be on the leaders head.

The thing is that the rules are common sense. Everyone that rides is thankfully smart enough to know we shouldnt litter, steal, tag, and go on the left lane. That being said, we all know there is always going to be that rider that wants to be all the way in the front, or the idiot that thinks its cool to tag. Not everyone will participate as much as we try. People in LA are just too crazy

The rules seem common sense to a lot of us. But there is a large percentage of riders that don't have riding etiquette. I see it on EVERY ride.

Something as simple as a patch on someones back would work.

Say, you have different riders and each has a different statement on their patch:

STAY RIGHT

RIDE IN A STRAIGHT LINE

DONT LITTER

YOU SUCK

as a ride leader,i can keep my eye on about 30 ridaz after that its hard, but I usually am loud and clear that there is a trash can close by or that I have a trash bag.Im always screaming stay to your right, slowing. calling potwhores, etc.I notice if I have more than 40 plus ridaz is hard, but Ive been fortunate to have help from fellow ridaz.I think you just have to be LOUD..but defantly very hard when a ride is 100 plus. Its impossible.

a few years ago i wrote this for C.MOB. we had it distributed on flyers and printed on spoke cards for a while and i would say it made some noticeable improvements. everyone could use a good reminder once in a while.

THE TEN CRANKMOBMENTS!

1. HAVE FUN -
That's is why we're here! Let's make sure that we can keep having fun by paying attention to the rest of these points.

2. BE SAFE -
We don't want anyone to get hurt, that includes you. If you or your bike are in no condition to ride, don't ride.

3. BE RESPECTFUL -
Respect the people around you and be aware of what you're doing. Respect yourself and don't get hurt. Respect the places we go to so that we can come back next year.

4. BE RESPONSIBLE -
Your actions have consequences. They also reflect on the entire group so please be smart. If you spot anyone being unsafe or disrespectful, call them out on it.

5. COMMUNICATE -
Call out hazards in the road. Call out the next turn. Call out if you're slowing, stopping or starting to go. Call out everything.

6. PASS IT ON -
If you hear someone calling something out, repeat it to make sure everyone hears.

7. LEAVE NO TRACE -
Clean up your litter. Let's leave this place like we were never here.

8. HOLD YOUR LINE -
Watch where you're going and don't weave recklessly through the crowd. If you need to stop, slowly make your way to the right side of the road where stopping is safe.

9. STAY RIGHT -
Leave the left lane open for passing cars. Please don't ride into oncoming traffic.

10. SLOW DOWN -
The party is right here, not up there somewhere. Stay with us and follow the ride leaders. They know where we're going.

11. HAVE F.U.N. -
Cuz it's worth saying twice!

I try to get everyone in a group and talk to them before we start and give them the route, the rules ....no littering, no rider left behind, and get everyone to meet everyone else..............and let them know i am not their leader. I just coordinate the ride. IF they dont want to follow the rules, there is nothing i can do about it. I try to get the peer pressure thing going, which works mostly. Anarchy in action.
