Good luck as there isn't much data available on this community. You can always do the anthropologist move and hang out with cyclists, writing about their group structure, etc.

people who ride bikes tend to interact with people that live and work a shorter distance from their house. (westside, eastside, valley)
bike shops, co-ops and coffee shops form a social hub for cyclists based on socioeconomic status, class and age. (think smashed up sundays at palms cycles, westside mosey and cubcamp at bikerowave, and the roadies who hang out at tanners every sunday in the marina.)
cycling breaks down social barriers and allows low-income people and children greater mobility.

ask your professor about using interviews as a part of your research.

If you need an actual published book to reference in terms of bike culture history check out this amazing read:
BIKE CULT its out of print, but i borrowed a copy from the LAPL (main/dtla branch).
Also ... just in terms of looking getting an overview the
MR wikipedia page is pretty awesome. wikipedia isnt really suitable as a primary reference, but the MR page has tons of great to other publications.

Tarsis,
What's going on with the bike community worldwide is the most important political, youth, alternative movement since Punk Rock.
Grass roots, DIY, non hierarchical.
Anyone can lead, anytime.
Self propagating.
Bypasses authority, government stuctures.
It doesn't confront authority in a combative way, it simply makes things happen without anybody's permission.
It doesn't strive for a utopian society in a distant future. It changes things here and now. The minute you stop driving a car and you start riding a bike, you are the utopian future right now.

Just write Live to Ride, Ride to Live all over your paper with Pabst Blue Ribbon. Then smoke a Doob-a-Loo and blow the smoke onto it. That pretty sums the bicycle community.

Tip: be more specific
Broad: "The bicycle community"
Narrow: Midnight Ridazz
Narrower: Wolfpack Hustle
Narrowerer: Joe Borfo
It will make your research much easier.
I think sociology is a pseudo-science.... sort of like psychology... Instead I would look at the research paper through the lens of Rush Limbaugh.
