Thread Box:
LAPD are not all bad.
Thread started by goosegoose at 12.26.09 - 3:39 pm

With all the hostility and bad rep the LAPD gets, we should point out all the good things they have done. NOT ALL LAPD officers are all bad. Sure we all have horror stories and run ins with "not so nice" police officers but I think it's a good idea to acknowledge some great and nice things the LAPD have done. Last night at LACM/People's RIde we had two incidence that I felt were very un-stereotypical of "bad cops"

At LACM, we stopped at 7-11 next to Pan Pacific Park, two officers were right in front right before we pulled in..

I acknowledged a hello to them. One officer proceed to say, "Even on Christmas you guys?" in very polite sarcastic manner. I acknowledged back "Yes, even on Christmas!" He told me while they were leaving "You guys are all crazy and I love what you guys do.. Please be safe out there tonight, there a bunch of drunk drivers out there.. You guys have a safe Merry Christmas and be careful tonight."

The second incident was at the beginning of the People's RIde. A officer pulled up to us and asked who was organizing the event and where we were going. We acknowledged that there was no organizers and we were going south. We had a brief conversation of where not to go because of heavy police activity and the cops didn't feel like dealing with us tonight. He told us we had to leave in 5 min but XRAY's bike had to be fixed.. He was very polite and talked about bike issues he had and let us fix the bike. He even told us that he's gonna pretend that he didn't smell the weed. A reminder it was about 5 MoM Ridaz who were talking to him. He wished us a Merry Christmas and left.

Maybe it was just Christmas spirit.. However stories like these really bring out some great and positive light to the LAPD.. They are all not the crooked and bad cops that some of us had to deal with. They are some good ones out there..

So when we do ride with a huge amount of ridazz... And a Police car come up to us to tell us just to stay to your right so traffic can flow.. PLEASE do not yell "FUCK THE POLICE!".. There only doing there job and keeping everyone safe.

The way I see it, those who get into trouble with the cops were probably asking for it in the first place.
Despite my ramblings about their(or any government entity) being entitled to union representation, I usually just nod at them and go my own way.

the cops showed up at downtown polo a couple weeks ago. They drove into the lot and asked what we were doing I told them that we were playing bike polo and they said they wanted to see it,they watched the game for a few mins said it looked like fun and they took off.

If we are going to bitch about all the bad stuff they do we should have atleast one thread that talks about the few times they don't fuck with us right?

WHY YOU GUYS ENTERTAIN THAT THEY ARE 'NICE' REALLY BLOWS MY MIND.

I ride around all the time with weed, pipes, my bong, booze... whatever.

I do the same stupid shit, pee in the same spots, and run the same lights.

Why have I never gotten a ticket, despite being pulled over many times?

Ask yourself what YOU are doing wrong also. Always. I don't mean disrespect, and I am not talking shit whatsoever. I know you are all smart enough to ride around in a safe way, but why do so many people get tickets?

I say "Yin and Yang" because it's really not ALL THAT one sided. There is a balance point that you can see illustrated in this thread. There are "Yin and Yang" riders also.

Perhaps I am just lucky....

One of the culprits seems to be CVC violations when it comes to getting pulled in.

I still recall the Peoples Ride from last December where myself, Drooby, and some other dude regrouped in an alley off of Hollywood Blvd.
A squad car blocked us in right there, told Drooby and the other dude to stay right there and told me to get lost.
All this dramatic action over "no lights" was just spillover from some other incident that occurred on the ride that night.

So remember kids, stay lit up, stay visible, and don't do anything obvious that will attract unwanted attention that you'll presumably come up to the podium later to complain about.

This is the sad state of things. The experience of meeting a cop that is actually polite is so out of the ordinary that it is enough to have people shower them with praise and love. Every cop is obliged to interact with every one of us in a polite and professional manner during every reasonable interaction. A cop being "nice" is not a good cop. It is supposed to be every cop.

I like the LAPD. I've had nothing but good experiences with them while on bicycles. Even when people around me were blatantly smoking out.

But something to share with you all. It could be A LOT worse. I just came back from a country where the police are liable to rob you. Most of the time you just have to grease them to get around town if you go out at night. And how could you blame them? They probably haven't been paid in months. If someone comes to rob you, you better believe there isn't going to be anyone coming to help. There is no 911.

At least the police here work. What would you rather the LAPD do, just go away? Turn a blind eye? We're a mass amount of cyclists on their streets, pretty hard to ignore. Its not like they've received immense training on how to deal with mass bicyclists.

First thing I read on this site every time I come on is: "Thanks to the Lapd officer..."
I may not always agree with their methods, but I believe in what they're trying to accomplish.

Then there's other countries where municipal police forces have been all but replaced by military forces.

Some complain about pay and benefits out here, but not getting what amounts to probably $100/month or less down there will be enough to make those in a position of power go to extreme levels of wackiness.

So the police have some useful function in society so therefore are beyond critique? That's not an argument. It sounds like, 'So you are environmentalist? why don't you live in the woods?'
In these two examples most people do a lot more than just call the police. The po po play a minor, often ineffective role when one is hit or has a bike stolen.

Let's try to wrap our minds around a concept.

We are breaking the law in a blatant - almost tauntingly - way.

Sorry guys, if you can't even run a red light without getting pulled over, you SHOULDN'T RUN IT AT ALL.

Pick your beer stops carefully, pick your pee spots even more carefully.

When all else fails upon dealing with a cop, keep your mouth shut. That is, if you don't like tickets.

TheDude

Every ride and party I've held or been to in NELA has been treated VERY WELL by the LAPD. These guys have real crime to stop - and if anything, they're usually just worried about scrapping some dumb white kid off the pavement later in the evening.

Bring on the civilizing force of enlightened law enforcement. Cops don't have to be bad guys, and most that I've met aren't. If you run a red light, piss on someone's house, or get caught breaking a reasonable law ... why is that the police officer's fault?

If you don't want to get drunk, don't WILLINGLY drink booze.

If you don't want to ride, don't WILLINGLY get on your bike.

If you don't want tickets, don't WILLINGLY break the law (like a non-ninja).

If you cannot break the law in a smart, aware matter, STOP.

Up your god-damned ninja skills.
LOOK AROUND before you run reds.

If you don't have the ability to spot the COP CAR, you logically don't have the awareness and understanding of your surrounding to risk your life running a red light.

Thank you.

"It could be worse" is not an excuse. If things can be made better, they should be. By your logic, would it be okay with you if your house burned down, because the fire department never showed up because things were worse in another country?

Its funny all the shit talking about cops but who do you call when your bike is stolen who do you call when you just had a hit and run by a car who do you call when the cops are being dickheads thats right we call cops.

And who doesn't show up when you call 'em? The cops. I have yet in my life to actually have a law enforcement officer of any kind show up when I have made a call. This includes a serious collision on the freeway that I had to clear myself via a poor little damaged Suzuki with recently-made-crooked suspension. Because no one in the local police or the CHP or tow trucks via dispatch could be bothered with it. When my car was broken into, they told me they couldn't send anyone to take a report because all units were currently busy (presumably ticketing Ridazz and photographers). I went to the station to file my report in person, and the officer taking the report told me my story was "suspicious." Your God-damned attitude is seeming pretty suspicious to me, officer. I'm not wasting two hours of my day to come in here and file a report on a crime committed against me to have you tell me you don't like the report.

I think it's absolutely hilarious that cops get offended when you point out who pays their salaries. The fact of the matter is that we do pay their salaries. Why else do they think the department is suffering now that tax revenue is down? They owe us respect and common courtesy at the very, very least.

I know, I know... things are worse in other countries, so I should just let it go, right?

...and Ridazz are not all good.

What does this have to do with it? Not all elderly people or little girls or pet kittens are good either. Does that mean the cops have a green light to be dicks at leisure?

Of course, if you break the law, you are liable. If you are a dick, you are liable. If I am a law abiding citizen who is going about his business and obeying the law in an orderly fashion, and the police harass me, I reserve the right to be as mad as I want. Don't tell me it's worse in other countries, or there are other bad people out there besides cops, or whatever... I do not deserve to be harassed when I am behaving myself, and I do not deserve to be ignored when I have a legitimate reason to request assistance.

I knew I shouldn't have read this thread...

On to that point, the ones here still get paid too much for their level of education.
$55,000/yr starting with just a HS-Diploma required?

I say the only persons who shouldn't be entitled to union-bargaining are "publicly-funded" employees.
If anything, housing allowances, good health/dental benefits, and a system of retirement akin to a 401k should be the norm, along with a salary-cap that doesn't make them look like high-priced pistol-packers.

You sound like a used car salesman.
What are you waiting for ?
The next poppy harvest in Afghanistan ?
We all know that you sold out big business and the New World Order, but
selling dope for extra cash and sacrificing young soldiers is unacceptable.
Besides your not even a natural born citizen, you have no right to be president.
