bicycles on rail metro committe meeting
Thread started by mechazawa at 07.15.09 - 6:24 pm

This is the meeting where they will consider lifting the ban on bicycles on rail during rush hour but also will try to impose other restrictions. If you want to get the policy lifted to help cyclist across LA and also make the policy reasonable? get your ass to the meeting.

meetting: 1pm

@ One Gateway Plaza

I'll be there. This proposal is bad. It is a limit on the number of cyclists disguised as a "lifting of a ban" and it it completely unacceptable. Do not be distracted by the "lifting of the ban" noise.

For your consideration, take a moment and email this to the Operations Committee members:

*************************************************************************************

Agenda item #48 for today's Operations Committee sounds like a good thing but the small print indicates that it is bad for cyclists and bad for the Metro.

It limits cyclists to two per car, it creates a safety hazard by motivating cyclists to move back and forth on the platform in search of the open car, the development of the proposal did not include the participation of the public and it fails to address other issues related to cycling.

I urge you to send it back to staff and to direct staff to lift the limit on the number of cyclists and to involve the cycling community in the development of a holistic and comprehensive "bikes-on-rail" policy, one that is worthy of a robust "Transportation System."

Attached is a link to an article that addresses the "Bikes-on-Rail" proposal. Also attached are two links to blogs that have comments on the Metro proposal.

On my behalf, please oppose Agenda item #48 at today's Operations Committee meeting.

looks like it already happened, eh? any word on how folding bikes are affected by this? i just ordered one specifically for the purpose of commuting via metro.

I'm here at the Metro now. Boardroom is lightly populated but I just spoke to the MAyor's rep and we're looking good.

Foldies are always good on the Metro Rail and on the Buses. Carry them on as luggage.

The issue today is the limit on the number of bikes per car.

They're still sore about the ride to Pasadena that filled all the Gold Lines cars with bikes. That was joyous for us, painful for them.

thanks for the info. yeah, that makes sense that they would be upset about cyclists taking up all the cars on certain bigger rides. but what about when the acura LA bike tour was going on, weren't cyclists encouraged to take the metro instead of driving? any word on the decision?

What a mind numbing journey!

I suggested that they look at the Metro as an actual "Transportation System" that services all modes.

Fasana suggested Congestion Pricing but Antonovich countered with a motion to investigate the larger issue of the movement of bikes, carts, strollers and luggage. He moved that the process include the LAFD, the LASD, ADD folks. I pointed out that the cycling community should be included. Rita Robinson amended and the motion to restrict the number of cyclists was tabled til September 30.

I spoke to LAFD Battalion Chief Quintanar and LASD Capt Jordan.

Lobby them on fair access for cyclists and a balanced approach to safety that addresses everybody, not just cyclists.

LAFD Chief Quintanar quintanarj@metro.net

LASD Capt. Jordan pjjordan@lasd.org

copy me at Stephen@ThirdEyeCreative.net and I'll carry them in to committee.

Ultimately, today would be considered a victory. The motion to restrict didn't succeed and staff have been instructed to include the cycling community in the process.
