Does anyone have the story on the recent hit and run. The cyclist got trapped under the car and got dragged.
reply
Yes.
Here's the story from the L.A. Times web site:
Investigators seek witnesses in fatal hit-and-run in Compton
February 15, 2010 | 4:29 pm
Authorities in Compton are looking for witnesses to a hit-and-run accident Monday morning that left a man on a bicycle dead.
A silver or gray 1990s Ford passenger van, possibly an Aerostar, struck the man about 8 a.m. as he was riding near South Dwight Avenue and West Compton Boulevard, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.
The vehicle was seen fleeing east on Compton. Rescuers attempted to treat the victim, but he died of his injuries. His name was not released, the department said.
Anyone with information is asked to call investigators at the Compton sheriff's station at (310) 605-6500.
Channel 9 says the rider possibly ran a red light, but the P.O.S. driver was on his cell, stopped for a moment then drove off.
Who can help with a Ghost Bike? I've built two recently, and can help get another one set up. Anybody have an old bike to donate to the cause?

Just saw that video and its heart braking that shit like this happens specially to someone that uses a bike for as form of transportation... we have to start finding a way that we decrease these types of accidents...I think that we should start making a petition for more bikes lanes... I hope that you guys can agree with me on this and start doing something...
In another note i have a mountain bike that i dont need although it needs a tube and the front rim is bent... contact me at 323-610-5150 txt/call and ask for Deysi :)

So the rider who was killed in Compton has a ghost bike in the works, is that right?
I have made 2 ghost bikes (with the help of Rev. Borfo) so far and they are still in place last time I checked. I don't want to recycle them. I want them to remain in place for the next 10 years!

I agree this needs to stop. But, there are some things we can do to prevent it, such as:
1. Get back to the old habit of having tall, red flags on our bikes, in the 70's and 80's all the cyclists had them especially the road bikes riding around Griffith Park. (They sale them online and at a bike shop on Ventura Blvd. in Studio City called Athena Bikes.) I just got one for my bike.
2. Wear WHITE pants and tops when riding day and night, white shows up more than any other color.
3. Alway have lights on your bike and keep them on day or night.
4. Use the side walk whenever possible.
5. Don't run red lights or assume on coming traffic sees you, they may be on the phone talking and distracted.
6. Don't ride intoxicated.

Bike Flags...lets get them on our bikes. Back in the day everyone had them, you would see fifty flags going down Old Zoo Dr. from a half mile away.
They are avaliable via Amazon.com for the same price as at Athena Bikes in Studio City, CA however you do pay extra for shipping.

To be honest, it's a great idea for safety ideally, but I can't see myself putting a bike flag on my bike. Just can't. It would get in the way & while I am not as concerned with aesthetics as other folks, it would be really intrusive to regular riding. And, I hate to say it, but a large flapping red piece of material on a wire post isn't going to stop some asshat on a cellphone, unfortunately. It may (in my opinion) actually only end up being more of a hazard.

a flag would affect my aerodynamics, slowing me down or making me have to pedal harder. riding on the sidewalk is just inconsiderate to walkers and your brakes when you have to constantly slow down for people. i wouldn't want to waste my light batteries in the day as i can barely afford anything, let alone batteries. good suggestions but not really practical. the law requires us to ride in the street most places

There is not that much drag, I never felt any when I had a flag on my bike and I used to do long endurance races when I had mine on, if anything it will make you stronger so that if you do compete and you take it off your ride will feel like a cake walk.
It's up to you, but don't kid yourself, they DO make a huge difference to drivers. I can see a flag from a quarter mile up the road in heavy traffic so I know I'm not the only one who can.
But, do what you want. It's your life. :)
