went to encino velodrome, now want to get into track.
can anyone recommend a CHEAP frame/fork?
i have wheels and components.
reply
bikes direct kilo tt.
the order of things to replace are crankset/BB and then wheels. thats it. don't buy some cheap used tarcking bike thats got 8 dents on the chainstay.

You may be able to buy a compleat bike almost as cheap, as you can sell off the new
parts you don't like. Giant has a decent ride.

Specialized has some trick entry level stuff also.
Avoid getting a cheap lead pipe frame

bikes direct doesnt sell just frame and fork. i was checkin out the kilo TT. do you know who does?
i have 105 crankset and BB. some soma 13t cog.
i need a chain, chain ring, and drop bars.
i have the nitto rb021 pursuit bar and hoping someone will trade me their drops.
i can see another money pit forming.

chain is 20 chainring is 50 drops are 30. that alone there is 100.
you will never use a 13t, trust me on this one sir chris hoy runs a 52x14
frame and fork will cost you between 250-400 depending on the condition its in. it may just be me but i would never buy a used track frame unless it is from another track guy.

Buy a compleat track bike, not a Hipster fixed gear replica
most track riders use a 165 mm crank
Encino a mid 80 inch gear works well
If you really get into it you will be spending some coin.
as you will need a rear disc and aero ft wheel etc.
I raced out there many seasons and it can be quite fun, but you get what you pay for
with equipment. Suggest starting out with a entry level racer from a major bike co.

call me joy kill, but why not just wait until you see how consistently you hit the velodrome? If you find yourself there all the time, then invest in a nice bike.
I have a decent mountain bike that rarely sees the trail these days. Its disheartening at times, but anytime you have a bike purposed for a specific location (velodrome, mountains), then you really have to go there (unless you plan on hitting street with your track bike).
My opinion: keep going until you really feel like you're going to keep doing this. I'll always hit the trail, even if not as much as I'd like, so it makes sense to have the bike.
Oh and the point being, I didn't mind buying fairly nice stuff for my bike because I knew it would be used. I think if you knew you would be hitting the velodrome a lot, then you would probably not mind skipping the cheap bike and just get what you really want/need. Which is probably better than having to ditch the cheap bike and invest in another one.
I dont know... but i hope that helps for whatever its worth

you're not being a joykill, you're being realistic and you make a good point.
i also have a mountain bike that i do not ride much since i got my roadie.
maybe i am jumping the gun a bit.
considering i have to save money for it anyway, might as well continue to use the rentals until i am consistently coming out to the track.

I recommend a KILO, on Bikes Direct. You can sell off the parts. Actually, I'd say the reverse of Junu, replace WHEELS (or just cog and lockring) FIRST then front drivetrain. I have been riding the kilo wheels for a while now, although I replaced the cog with a Dura-Ace one so it wouldn't strip... it finally stripped while I was riding last weekend. Scary. If you don't want to buy the complete bike, they sell cheap track frames, including the kilo
here on Bike Island (sister of Bikes Direct). As for track tires, the only "track tires" you can buy would be sew-ups technically, the kilo just comes with REALLY SHITTY kendas that should be replaced ASAP because they're practically fold-ups when they shouldn't be.
ok wow, longest post of mine since 2009.
woo good luck, mike!

oh yeah, and i've a lot of complaints about the cog stripping and what not.
i just need to get the frame and fork and i should be set.

Whats a sew up ?
Is that like a Tubular tire where the tube is sewn up inside the tire,
and then glued on to a special rim ?
I heard that some Track tubulars can be inflated to 200 psi

Listen to md2. I was all stoked on track for about 5 minutes. The more I did it, the more I realized how much it bores me. Saved myself a pretty penny.
If you wind up really loving to go round and round in circles, then you'll probably find that you'll easily come across very nice used complete bikes, race ready, at reasonable prices.
Take it from me, don't jump the gun. heh

aren't all tubulars stitched up under base tape?
Nowadays most tufos and vittorias can be pumped to 245 psi but even at ADT i hear a lot of recommendations against it. besides all that dust on the wooden track leaves a nice slippery film on the sticky tires.
and what are the odds of the hub stripping with only track use? does it strip when applying torque because that should be an issue for a recall. i don't use a lockring so skidding shouldnt ever be a problem in a track

its only about the circle when you get dropped and you're finding your way around the turns
its only a circle because it makes sense for it to be a circle. when sprinting, it feels like a straightaway with full loops in between
