Just finishedl aying out the official course. Helmet cam video hopefully tomorrow. One mile long. 10 laps & fast lap times will be 6-7 minutes each. Winning time will be just over an hour I am guessing. Race will end on winners lap meaning that if you are lapped you will do nine laps, lapped twice 8 laps etc. Course is kick ass!!!

gonna be muddy!!
I'll try to make it...
By the way, if Cat 1 is the most prestigious, Im confused if Cat 2 is more prestigious than 3 and 4.... and if so... why?

Diffuculty. A coaster only bike is the hardest to master, then a dept store klunker, then a full rigid vintage mtb, then a single speed. The single speed is last becaue it can be up to date modern and people who ride these tend to be very strong riders.

The issue is not such the intent of design, but longevity....
Dept store bikes will survive the trail... its just which and how many trials that make them useless..... for those who want to continue.
I guess I see vintage as more prestigious than klunker... its hard to shake that... and SS kicks ass, so Im just biased....
I think our resident single speed-coaster brake-huffy gets it right.... but for all other bikes... i dont know
You can modify a klunker overtime to make it trail worthy... and just hope welds hold and such, but todays klunkers aren't too far off from Vintage MTBs (given the bike).
I guess if your vintage ride is decked out in XTR with anodized pink everything... we're talking about two different things... but modern dept store bikes are kind of using vintage equivalent stuff now (unless people show up on vintage beauties)
Is Shimano 200GS really much better than todays dept store bike?
Maybe im wrong... either way.... im hoping to make it to the ride.

1. Show up ready to race. Most groups will be a few riders each so your chances are good from the start.

We have had a huge response back for the Klunker Run!
Great family event! Invite all of your friends and family. Even if you don't plan on competing come out and share in the festivities & check out some local riding spots!!!
We originally planned it for the eccentric side of the mtb community but we have had so many requests for "standard mountain bikes" that we are going to run an additional wave as Cat - 5 "Open Class". Cat - 5 Open class can be ANY non-motorized bicycle.
Sign ups will be from 8:00am - 10am (signups close promptly at 10am - no exceptions - signups and scoring = same people!).
The Open Class will run immediately after the Klunker/Single Speed classes. Entry fee is $10 entry fee and includes a tee shirt.
If you decide you want to run the Open Class after finishing the Klunker/Single Speed class you are welcome - free entry for second class.
Weather should be perfect and with the current rain trails are dialed!
BBQ during and after the races so plan on sticking around!!!

Oh man... I so want in on this.
Question 1- I'd be racing on Polo Bike. What category would she go in? She's a standard Target bike, but I've stripped off the entire shifting system and the rear brake. I've also replaced the cassette a coupe of times (kept breaking teeth), and I just put on a SS cog and chain, although I might switch back to my most recent cassette and (the original) chain for the race. And the wheel covers shouldn't be an issue, right?
Question 2- Paul, would you have room for one more? If not, who wants to take the train with me?
danya02.10.10 - 12:32 am
reply
1) CAT 5 if you add shifters. CAT 4 if you leave it a SS. It would be CAT 2 w/o modifications and if you paid less than 199.99
If you run it a SS make sure you have something around a 2:1 ratio. If you're a really strong SS rider you can probably go a bit beyond 2:1. It really depends on the amount of elevation. I havent looked at the course. Might be good to bring an extra cog and chain when you see the course.... but again, its supposed to be a fun ride....
Riding up hill on trails if far different than street; it is harder, slower and if you lose traction you want to be able to start pedaling again... so a 2:1 works well in most Los Angeles area trails for general SS riders. Of course there are some really strong riders who ride closer to 2.25:1+
Wheels covers will probably be a disadvantage in speed, but I dont see a significant problem outside of that, as long they dont fall apart and litter the trail.
Do you have knobbie tires?

02.10.10 - 9:06 am
reply
She's currently got a 1.45 ratio, although I'll probably try to make something more like a 1.9 work. I'm certainly not going so far as to put shifters back on my polo bike, that's AZ's sort of thing.
I've got the original knobby on the front and a slick on the rear wheel, and I know all about the disadvantages of wheel covers, I just thought I'd list them as one of my bike's modifications.
I guess I wasn't really clear on my original question- I'd like to ride in CAT 2, so would the mods listed be too much?

Course notes for gearing.
I recommend running easier than 2:1 gearing.
Something like 36x20 is probably a better choice.
The climbing is 2/3 of the course and you wont need to pedal much on the descent.
adventurich02.10.10 - 9:43 am
reply
You guys should add the CAT 5 to the other blogs and AC website.
Also, do you guys needs anything? Potluck?
Also, Im assuming the race will have CAT 1 and 2 at 10am, and then Cat 3 and 4 at 11am. Followed by Cat 5?
So we wouldnt be able to ride Cat 3 and 4, right?
md2 responding to a
comment by adventurich
02.10.10 - 7:50 pm
reply
if you want to bring anything for a potluck that would rule!
We will have a BBQ with hot dogs and burgers.
Cat 1,2,3 & 4 All start together at 10am.
Cat 5 (open class) will start immediatly after the 1-4 race finishes.
If you race in the 1-4 race you are totally welcomed to race Cat 5 if you want.
Signups for all races close at 10am.
One other note. I think the fast lap times will be about 7 minutes. 7 minutes x 10 laps is one hour ten munutes. All riders will finish on the lead lap - meaning that if you are lapped you do 9 laps, lapped twice you do 8 laps etc. This will have everyone riding for the same amount of time. Again my guess is a little over an hour for the winner and under and hour and a half to the last finisher on the course.

All 4 CATs at once... thats gonna be a dope race... I so hope all 4 CATs have a enough riders... too bad the rain stopped... add some mud to circus...
There should be like a figure 8 section where riders have to cross the intersection... you know like they do with demolition cars...
Anyhow... thanks, this seems real cool...
I hope I can help with future events... this is exactly what needs to happen more in Los Angeles

We have worked on the trails all week and I have to say the course kicks ass!!!
I suggest easy gearing for sure. I have a 30x18 on the coaster right now.
I would say 36x20 would be a good choice (if in doubt go easier).
Not too much downhill pedalling - fair amount of climbing.
The climbs are all easier than Coaster Brake Challenge #3.
Make sure that your bike is tuned up and tight!
