But, seriously, it is not as if we don't all know what is needed: Less negativity and more mutual support. Less talk about individual freedom and more about collective responsibility. Not less talk and more action, but more of BOTH.
Mutual support doesn't mean turning off your criticality but rather treating other people with respect. Yes, even if you feel they don't deserve your respect. I know this is not the way of the internet, but that is just a lame excuse by scared boys for their own lack of self control. GROW UP.
Collective responsibility doesn't mean censorship; it means knowing that your actions and words have ramifications beyond just yourself. It also means that, as a group, we can accomplish more than as individuals, even if all we accomplish is FUN.
Action is good. But talk is good too -- when people conduct themselves in a mature manner. The idea that talk is all bullshit is itself bullshit as talk influences action. Action without thought is bullshit. MORE OF BOTH.

most of the people on these threads cannot be represented by their handles in real life. a part of maturity is being able to control what affects you personally. however people often find themselves offended without reason, angry without conviction, and filled with entitlement but lack consideration. we pick and choose our battles, our sides, our rides, our friends.
there is no true 'negativity'. its miscommunication at best, and whining, and bitching and moaning.
if you can't handle the negativity, your participation is not mandatory.
you dont need to be on the forum to ride, and you dont have to ride to be on the forum.
and as many of the pseudonyms have already demonstrated, nobody can be held accountable for what they say online.

You know, Junu, at the risk of sounding overly condescending, I feel sorry for people who grew up with the internet. Because, really, this attitude that not only are people not expected to stand behind their word but indeed that one is being totally unreasonable to expect that at all from people, well, this was not always the way.
In the end, what I posted yesterday still makes my point most succinctly:
All Roadblock is asking is for everyone to exercise some discretion and some creativity. This should only be a problem if you have none.

how about instead of complaining how you miss the good old days
( 5/08 for you ) start a ride yourself? no drinking,no drugs,and only positive vibes. i am sure people will come.
set the example by actions.who knows what kind of change you might bring.
i agree with alot of things you are saying.however its naive to think the change you are looking for will come from talking about it.

I have been talking about starting a ride for a long time now and am almost ready to actually put it into action. After ALC, look for what will hopefully become a regular weekday (probably Tuesday) night ride from me.

on my own i've been doing rides sober.pier pressure,last two no name rides,critical mass......to anybody reading this midnight rides
are just as fun not wasted.and you would be amazed how far a simple wave and thank you goes to preventing car VS. bike hostility.

Not true. If hundreds of daily crap posts begin to dilute the site to such an extent that posters seeking a functional forum begin to look elsewhere, you may find that those crap posts, while lacking in individual substance, can link together to form a relavent reason to ban someone. I mean, assuming RB still wants the forum to be functional.

i am thinking about reputation systems.
Stack Overflow has a really awesome one. I've been thinking about how to bolt something like that onto this without messing up the existing architecture too much. This could help. And if someone's reputation points go negative, they'll find themselves not being able to do much. The tricky thing is figuring out how to prevent people from gaming the system, but I think we have enough users that most attackers would die of the tedium of managing enough fake accounts to sway the voting, and even them we could block 'em by IP, and the amount of dorky hacking required to get around that would really not be worth the effort. It's a discussion board, not a bank.

It basically just seems like it would take the naturally occurring peer pressure of this forum and make it an anonymous process.
Maybe I'm wrong. But, in my experience, the solution to social problems created by technology is rarely more, or more complicated, technology.
