Your help please (esp. any women).

I'm building a freewheel for my (moderately athletic) GFs birthday - I think a gear ratio of 42/16 might be good for her to start off, but don't want her to outgrow it to soon.

Can I ask what any of you gals ride, or rode when you started off?
