bicycle riding? really?

i was looking at the ride calendar, and idk, it seems kind of uhhh, not right.
when people are walking/without bikes/just not doing well in general, how can we go do a bike ride where we ride bikes. and considering how big these rides get now, it's gonna be a shit ton of bikes.
with the events thats been going on (economic turmoil, the fires, food shortages overseas), is this really a good idea?
i'm not really one to preach, im just as much of a dirtbag as the next guy, but when there's bike rides in downtown where co-ops give the homeless free bikes, a ride based on riding bikes just sounds wrong. keep in mind that thanksgivings right around the corner and people are walking.
also keep in mind, bike rides are messy as fuck. we're gonna be wrecking our own streets, blocking traffic, throwing away beer cans.. after this, you have no right for the cops to be on ur ass on bike rides.
does anybody else agree or am i gonna get shit talked on?

Your perspective is the reason why i don't do "social" rides. I just participate in ones who just want to mash through the city as fast as possible and go home. social interaction is during the breaks :)

OF COURSE IT'S A GOOD IDEA.
Just because times are hard doesn't mean the fun has to stop, especially when it's something as harmless and cheap as RIDING AROUND ON THE BIKES WE ALREADY OWN.
I mean, if my sitting at home instead of riding my bike somehow made the hills less flammable, or somehow fed third world children, I'd miss more rides than I already do, but the world just doesn't work that way.
If you want to Schedule a UNICEF ride, or a Pay off California's Budget Deficit Ride so CA has Plenty of Money to Fight Fires ride, and do a collection at the beginning and every stop and send in the money, that would be awesome. (Or just collect the discarded beer cans and turn them in and send the change to a good cause.)
But being miserable because others are miserable isn't any fun and it sure as heck doesn't help anyone.
In fact, our being out in force and having fun on our bikes serves as an excellent public reminder that it is possible to have a TREMENDOUS amount of fun without spending very much money at all, which is an important reminder as people have to cut back and budget their expenses. (The bicycle is the single most popular wheeled vehicle across the world, so it's not like there are that many people who can't afford them, especially in CA.)
I'd argue that the more rides we do, the better.
