Wow, 58 miles is nothing to sneeze at.
I would have a tough time staying awake at work, and impossible time keeping my eyes open when I got home (I used to commute 24 miles to work-each way)!

dayone here's my route:
starting in Eagle Rock…
Yosemite west to
Eagle Rock Blvd North
to Colorado Blvd West
to Broadway westbound to Wilson
to Verdugo North to
Monterey Rd west to Geneva,
to Glenoaks and go West
West on Winona
North on San Fernando Rd (the one east of the train tracks)
Left on Arvilla
North on San Fernando Rd proper
West on Strathern
Northwest on Webb
West on Roscoe
North on Van Nuys to Parthenia
West on Parthenia to Owensmouth
North on Owensmouth
couple of rough patches on San Fernando Rd...but the east side "mini" San Fernando Road is better than the ultra busy San Fernando Rd proper...

They are supposed to be extending the Orange Line and its bikeway from its current western endpoint at Victory/Canoga all the way north to the Chatsworth Metrolink station. Not sure when thats supposed to be complete, but that route might work better for you when its done!

tried that route before...westbound from the Noho hub...there are WAY too many lights on that route...it was safe, but slow

And from where I live, I can cycle to my destination faster than public transit. It's almost 30 miles...but it took over 2 1/2 hours on public transit. Didn't try the Metrolink as it's expensive....but on my bike I can get there in less than 2 hours. If I had just green lights, it'd probably be around an hour and a half...

Skip the Busway Bike Path through Van Nuys. Stay on Chandler to Van Nuys Blvd, right turn one block to Burbank, over the bridge into Balboa Park, rejoin the bike path at Balboa. WAYYY less lights. The busway bikepath through Van Nuys kinda sucks I agree :)

the route I'm taking is better and with less traffic at the moment, and the lights are better synched up to my normal speed...that little stretch of bikeway is alright, but I can't go as fast on the sidewalk like I can on the street ...

It was very uncongested because of: Friday light traffic, school's out, recession, Laker hangovers
Times honked at: 0
Cars that slowed to let me merge or have the right of way: 2
Cars that didn't make their left in front of me, but waited to let me pass: 4
I waved thanks to all 6 of these people
Cars with Laker flags: I stopped counting
If I could just have green lights the whole way... I could get to work in an hour and a half!
