Any helmet will do! The trick is to put it on and walk outside, don't look in the mirror and you'll be fine... cruisin' along with your cool helmet on.

dont worry about looking cool
those helmets are designed for maximum airflow to your head to keep you cool.
if someone thinks you are "uncool" because of the helmet you wear, they are obviously not the type of person whose opinion ACTUALLY MATTERS, haha.
wearing helmets and not being dead is the new fixed gear. i thought you knew.

Before you worry about how cool your helmet looks, think about how cool you'd look with brain damage.

I wonder if you can look "fresh" after your head is caved in or splattered across the pavement.

Check out this site, http://www.nutcasehelmets.com/Pages/index.aspx
They have lots of neat designs to choose from, however if you want a really goo helmet that both ventelates and crushes in to prevent concussions on major impact then you will need this: http://www.celebratecycling.com/Pages/Accessories_You_Need/bicycle-helmets.html Which is the typical bike helmet with foam lining.

Dude seriously I used to not ride with helmets but after being hit by a car 3 times I have learned my lesson that my head is more important than looking cool. I use my helmet at all times I have a livestrong GIRO helmet which is really comfy and I ride fixed ps if that makes me any cooler.

You don’t look cool riding a bike without a helmet.
You look stupid.
Keep up with that stupid look and you may eventually look retarded or dead.
Of course you can get feeding tubes in really cool colors.

Well that's news to me. After all I have never been involved in a life altering bike crash or 4.
/Sarcasm
I agree with you, and I have a 3 inch long scar on my scalp as my daily testament to it.
My point is that there are two separate and unique sets of risks involved with each activity, and I think climbing up hills in a professional race environment is among one of the least risky riding times. Dangerous, yes, duh.
However, this is not a good example when talking about the much riskier activity (statistically) of riding in the streets of DTLA day and night, through traffic and drunk/cellphone drivers/buses/potholes/taxis/hummers/etc...
Helmets are the new getting laid. I thought you knew : )

Oh Velocipede, aren’t you a clever one.
Those are certainly some wonderful pictures of some historical professional bike races. Since you seem to be a historian I’ll remind you that at one point it was common practice to employee asbestos and lead based paint when building homes.
But I have no doubt a smart cookie like you can produce some pictures of relevance to this discussion; perhaps a few from a professional bike race that occurred in 2010 that shows all the fine racers sans helmets.
You can right?
Or are you just another fine example of the prevalence of sub par intelligence found in and around our community?

Damn you take shit way too seriously. Back when I was in high school, I used to come on internet forums and talk shit about people I didn't know, call them stupid and whatnot. Then I realized that this stuff is not to be taken seriously at all. Is there an emoticon for tongue-in-cheek? The winky one maybe? What if we lived in a world without helmets? Maybe people wouldn't be so inclined to ride around on the streets without brakes. Maybe people would hold their line like their life depended on it. Maybe they would learn to not take stupid risks and ride safely instead of hoping a piece of foam and plastic will keep them alive when they fuck up. I have a serious problem with people that go around calling people stupid. Who the hell are you? If someone doesn't want to wear a helmet so what? You just rock your brain bucket and keep riding.

I've bonked my head three times, once hard enough to break my helmet and be knocked out for two minutes. Nobody ever intends to crash and not one of my crashes had anything to do with cars. I know that without a helmet I might not be riding around today, so I count every ride as a blessing from the universe.
But I only offer my experience for what it's worth - I don't lecture anybody about wearing a helmet. It's an individual choice. I rode a bike for 40 years without wearing a helmet - heck, when I was kid nobody wore bike helmets.

Your statement made me realize something... Do you think drivers perceive cyclists who are all kitted out differently than the average normal clothed commuter cyclist just because they're dressed like the next Lance Armstrong? Do motorists think they are safer riders and know what they are doing more than someone in jeans and a tshirt? Roadies??? Anyone have any experience with this???

I don't have any specific examples, but I've noticed that motorists are generally more courteous when I'm "kitted out". I think for some people it has the opposite effect. Seeing someone in good shape enjoying a bike ride incites rage in some people.

It is just an observation. It does not necessarily apply solely to fully decked out spandex roadies. We are talking about Helmet vs. no helmet here. I just notice that drivers are more respectful to me on the road more when I have a helmet on. That's all.
