So I had the idea to start a thread inviting everyone to give suggestions as to what they would do with the extra 400.00 or so a month if they did not buy a car and car insurance and gas and oil changes. This adds up to almost 5K per year in savings.
It may not seem like much, but, after working to buy two cars I can definatly say I have buyers remorse...I never travled, or furnished my apt like I would have liked, mostly because I was brainwashed into the idea that I needed to be in a car to get around. I estimate that I've spent close to 75K on cars, gar, insurance, gas, and up keep and intrest to buy the cars.
Considering I was in my twenties and early thirties when I did that I feel like there were much better things I could have done with my disposable income.
Which brings us to the point of this thread; what would you do with the extra money you save if you commuted to work on bike?
I would have taken a vacation abroad once a year, with compounding interests rates maybe saved up a generous down payment on a home.
Okay, now it's your turn!
p.s. Obviously you don't have to have a car payment to play this game, just say what you like to do with extra money, for some it may be a simple as being able to live in your own place. :)
" I would save it up for helicopter flight-school or something to that effect."
Flight school would be fun, I think I would have gone on more mini-vacations, like taken the helicopter to Catalina Island for the weekend, or done a Nappa Valley Wine tour, or gone on a three day cruise perhaps.
I took sailing lessons, but, I could not afford to rent the boats very often so I would have done more of that too.

"Yeah, it feels alot better when you're the captain of your own respective ship."
Channel Island Harbor is fun for sailing around and they rent 17" sail boats for about 20.00 per hour. I think there is something similar in Marina Del Rey. They also do charter trips to the underwater wild life reserve on the Channel Islands.
i would get plastic surgery to the Ts so i can look 30 years younger and get myself some underage.....well. this is the internet. i dont think im gonna go that far. but yes. get something i wasnt able to in my youth.
last year, i spent $6000 on bikes, bike parts, bike clothing and other things related to biking. with my extra money, i bought delicious food, which i now eat much more of.
@Girl Power Good point / question. Cars are stupid expensive, aren't they? I would save up to start my own bar!!!! Well, I'm already doing that, but I'd be doing it a lot faster.
And THEN what coldcut said. We'd be living blissfully without at least two people from this tread by now.

I agree! And the bar sounds great! I hope you will have some Old Imperial Rasputin Draft on hand. *nudge, nudge, wink, wink*
After college I was working to pay for student loans and my car, that I thought I had to have to have a life, after my student loans were paid off I needed to buy a new car, then it just seems like I was working to pay for a car since that was my biggest expense.
In hindsight I can see how spending thousands of dolors of my disposable income (not rent and food) in my twenties and early thirties on cars and car payments actually had the opposite effect of giving me a 'life' since I had no money left over to do fun things...like have a life.
