is it possible to take a road wheel and just adapt it to single speed/ fixed by adjusting the axle or using some spacers? Or would it be better to rebuild the wheel as a single speed wheel ... or do i need a special hub for fixed?

The hub in question is a older type hub that takes a freewheel rather than a cassette. The hubs are very nice phil wood's w/ sealed bearings, which is why I want to use them if i can.

You can sometimes find a bottom bracket lock ring that has the same thread and pitch as the hub. While it's not reverse threaded I have seen it work and not fail with over 8 years of hard service.

Use red locktight on the threads for the ring, and make sure it fucking tight.

Oh and depending on the wheel, it could be dished .. It probably is. so it will look silly. Sometimes you can get the dish out if the spokes on the drive side are ling enough, but it's tough to do. Better off building a new wheel.

Thanks Mr. Mook,

What's this for? To change the between the hub and the gear?

Sorry ... this is my first single-speed bike since I killed my Huffy, ghost-riding into a tree sometime in the late 80's.

Can you post a photo of the hub in question? Thinking about it harder, there were tons of weird stuff manufactures were doing in the 80's.

The dish keeps the rim in center of the rear dropout's, it's not symmetrical, to make room for the rear "gears".
