It seems like there are way fewer posts and posters lately.

Suspicions confirmed:
This is based on real data - a monthly sampling of reply ID #s going all the way back to the beginning of the forums. Unless there are a bunch of deleted replies or something, then these numbers should be an accurate reflection of post traffic on the MR forums. I don't have any way to easily measure the number of posters over time, but I'd guess you're probably right about that too.

early '09 was MR busiest. i wonder what was going on.
when i saw the chart confirming what trickmilla said it dawned on me when reading older posts as being around the forums busiest time, that i know some of the people who are not active on the forums anymore. i noticed it but just kept that in the back of my mind. Some people moved on busy, "above it", and/or tired of the negativity(trolls, shit slinging, attacks). you can speculate, if you don't already know, about the reasons on why some people are not active. Many new people have joined but are just watching or not posting as much since they may not anything to add to many a time exclusive conversations. the forums have been considerably negative so maybe there will be even less posting. i feel that the numbers will start going back up once the new people and some of the older posters get comfortable with the community and forums. MR is ever evolving and it takes time.

We haven't seen many "trolls" like crazy penis around here in awhile. Trolls cause the post count to go up.....Bring back Looser1 and Crazy penis and you will see your numbers go up.

Yeah, it definitely seems there were probably more rides of a larger caliber and much more post-ride feedback to go along with it.
CRANK Mob, and some of the other large rides disappeared and in a way, have taken their hordes with them.
At this point, it's hard to say where the future will be going.
Will there be a collective re-emergence of the chill, 1000+ rides from a short time ago?
Or will the speed-bandits inundate all rides with their ass-hattage and add fuel to the fire of negativity?

Summer 2008 was the best bicycle summer ever! And everyone was posting how awesome each ride was.

actually, I think negativity make for temporary surge
the numbers of users dip when people get frustrated f
or maybe the economy is improving and the funderemployed have had less time to waste on the interwebz.

I cross my fingers that Summer '08 wasn't the last hurrah of MR.
Sadly, the way rides have been going, it definitely seems that way now doesn't it.
One wonders what a loner like myself will do after it's all finally come crashing to a halt.
An emo thing to say, but nathansniders mathematical chart reminds me of one of those Hubbert charts that depict "peak" cycles.

They'll all either be planning the first stages of the Pandora Mission, or melting down used car-hulks for armor in a battle for what's left of the arable farm-land in Yuma Valley.

OK, new graphs because I'm bored:
This is the same data as the previous graph, but smoothed with a moving average to make the trends clearer (as if they needed to be).
Based on a sampling of event posts, I was trying to get an idea of whether the decline in the forums indicates a decline in the usefulness of the MR web site as a whole. The ride calendar seems to be plateauing at almost 6 rides per day, so people are still posting their rides up, even if nobody wants to talk about them here.
"Valid" user accounts are the ones not created by spam bots. Anyway, it looks like people keep signing up here. Whether they stick around is anybody's guess. Yeah, sure, I could've graphed new users
per day to be consistent with the other graphs, but I was lazy.
