"Waaah! Something unjust happened in football, and my beloved Ireland won't be in the world cup! I hate all things French, FIFA, UEFA, ref, etc.etc.etc."
We get it buckchin, you're upset. Ireland probably still would have lost, wouldn't have done squat in the WC, and is pretty much shite in general.
Man, it's about time those muthas pull it off for me. They been getting so close and yet so far for too damn long. And man, they're going to miss Torres on the field.
Yeah ... That was a terrible terrible move .... I love how not one person on this thread is routing for the US ... LOL ... could you imagine if they actually did win it all .. .
Landon Donovan is a self-righteous prick, and what's-his-face (crap, I'm blanking on his name) is injured and not in the line-up. Meh. There's just nothing of interest there. I mean, I hope they do okay, I suppose, but with their first game being against England...that's a tough one straight out of the gate. More power to them.
P.P.P.S. Did you guys see that Crewest Gallery downtown is going to be showing games? They also have a World Cup exhibition up right now with custom painted soccer balls and other art:
I could except the hand ball if that was all that happened, thats football, sometimes the refs make mistakes. But first they changed the rules right before the draw to make france, Portugal and Russia seeded teams so they didnt have to play each other. It was supposed to be an open draw but they changed right before the pick to make sure the better teams had it easier, is that fair? Then the final piece of bullshit, how is it that france the best non seeded team ends up in the final group with the worst seeded team South Africa. Now tell me that was just luck? What team are you going for?

Re England / US - here's an interesting sentence taken from the NYTimes: All three of the United States team’s goalkeepers play in England, where they have proven to be top class and raised the standing of American shot stoppers.
Hes keeping it real ... this is probably the first ever post I agree with from young blood... Im shocked ... extremely shocked... i think they played down to them and got worked ...
I'm going to be in Minneapolis visiting family when it starts up. There better be a bar somewhere that shows this shit. I wonder if they even give a fuck about soccer up there.
See ... Buckchin, your first comment about refs/FIFA/UEFA etc. all being haters was a bit much.
Your second comment is quite reasonable. In fact, I agree ... especially regarding FIFA changing the rules at the last moment when they realized France/Portugal might not make it. But, whats done is done, etc. Not to mention, there are so many other bad decisions (e.g. no video technology, pointless extra official) they have made, that this was just a tip of the iceberg.
Back on topic ... I am `going for' the US, though I am interested in a lot of other story lines (will the US get past the group stage, which African team can progress the furthest, will Argentina implode, will Spain finally avoid underperforming, the effect of England/Ivory Coast/Germany all losing their captains).

DUDE ... that was a good first game ... I hate to say it but Mexico should have flat out won that game if it wasn't for that horrible offsides call....
A player is in an offside position if he is in his opponents' half of the field and is nearer to his opponents' goal line than both the ball and the next to last opponent.

Im clear on the rules of soccer .. It was pretty close... I didn't think it was but... o well. even with the offsides they still had plenty of chances to score .. it should have been like 4 -1 ...
Nice - Casey's is where I watched a lot of the early games last time around, glad to see they're still representing under its new ownership. Thanks. (I would probably rather stick a pencil, sharp end first, up my ass than watch anything at ESPN Zone...!)
Im lucky because in my building they always have the games on downstairs .. as for downtown that's close .... hmmm .. I can only think of places from 7th street on becuase thats where I work ... maybe try the Carl's Jr next to the Library ...

spain = lebron james of soccer. what did you expect was going to happen? when the US beats you in an international tournament, you know you suck, because we all know the US only practices to beat Mexico.
The only team that really dominated so far is Germany. Brazil looked good, but they were playing the 105th ranked team. Slow start for England, but I see them going all the way. Long shot sure, but now they have a better chance than Spain.
FACT: No team has won the world cup when they have lost the first match

Spain always lets me down in the World Cup, but not quite like this. That was one hell of a janky goal Switzerland scored, even more janky than US's goal, but Switzerland's defense looked really good.
I guess it's been a long 2 years since the Eurpean Cup, when Spain looked beautiful against Germany.
Still, I'm not sure you can discount them - with this loss, they've still won something like 43 out of the last 49 games they've played...and that ain't bad.
South African Man Killed For Turning On The World Cup
He was beaten to death by his wife and children after he dared change the channel from their gospel program. Considering the match he wanted to watch was Germany/Australia, I have to say, it probably wasn't worth it for him. [AP]
NICE! I hope France gets bootes after this round. Probably won't.... but that would be so awesome.
That was a great game! Although...I need someone to explain why that first Mexico goal wasn't off-sides. It's wasn't off-sides at they point they illustrated it on ESPN...but once he took off running, and the ball was in the air being passed to him, wasn't he off-sides? Just because the ball is in the air doesn't change anything, right?
A player in an offside position at the moment the ball is touched. or in this case is on side..
I didn't see the play, but a lot of times defense will attempt and offside trap and fail, and it looks like the attacking player is blatantly off side but is not.

Aha! Thank you Foldie and AIDS66 for the off-side trap lesson.
I'm glad Mexico won, it was a rad game. Feel bad for the US, they should have won that game...and they really could have used the 3 points for a win. I only saw the second half, so to me they looked pretty good.
Yeah the first half USA looked Terrible. But I was impressed with their moxie to come back and they should have won it.
I can't believe Germany lost. I haven't seen it yet, but from what I read Germany played with 10 men for most of the game and had a penalty kick they missed to tie it.

As of right now .. top 3 teams ... Brazil, Mexico and Germany ... thats just based on what I have seen ... I will throw the US in a not so distant 3rd due to the fact that they pulled off a comebacks in both games they played ...
That was bullshit .. it wasnt even a good dive .. KaKa probably should have been taken out but... they already qualified so its not that big of a deal ...
KaKa go take a shower, LOL. notice how every team in the nike commercial is cursed. drogba injured, italy not even with help from refs can they win. england playing like shit, france well it's france, brazil also playing like shit and ronaldinho at home, and portugal well nothing but hype. Cristiano gets cracked tomorrow.
and yes brazil plays like shit even if they win. beating North Korea and Ivory Coast really is that something to cheer about.
When I lived in Barcelona (1998 - 1999), I had a student (I taught English) who was a baby tax lawyer - he worked at his dad's law firm - and he had season tickets to Barca, and would kick me down tickets if he couldn't go or wasn't interested in the game.
So, in 1999, when little bald buck-toothed Ronaldo was playing for Barca, the Brazil national team played an exhibition game against the Brazil national team (they had just lost the World Cup to France, in 1998). That seriously had to be the coolest game I ever watched, and Barca won! Of course, I can't remember which side Ronaldo played on...
spain is playing alright. not at the level that they should be playing. which is true of all the top teams playing right now. i don't know why but it does seem like top teams are playing at a sub par level. my top teams were spain, england, italy, france, germany, and brazil. it's honestly anyone's game at this point still.
portugal did kick the shit out of north korea today... but then again, it's north korea.
I thought Spain looked good the first half, but looked pretty bad the second half. They fumbled around in front of the Honduras goal so many times...they were the keystone cops of futbol.
i don't know what you've been smoking but they've got 0 points, 2 losses, 1 goal scored, and 9 goals scored against them. not to mention they're ranked 105 internationally.
