do you have to have a track bike or is any fixed gear allowed? my gear ratio is most definitely wrong for this though

fixed gear no brakes. Recommended 84+ gear inches (though this is a blind recommendation, i myself run 92.*)

no quick release is the only rule
if you don't have a bike, they have rentals available for $5 bucks.

just to clarify --
any fixed gear bike without brakes is okay. drop bars are not required for training sessions.
quick release hubs are prohibited for racing but i see a lot of quick releases during training sessions.
a good ratio for Encino is anywhere in the 80's. 81" is good for winter training. 86" is good for your first few races.
i believe bike rentals are $7.
rental bikes do have pedals. in fact, i think that starting this year they won't be allowing you to bring your own pedals. too many stripped crank threads.
if you haven't ridden at Encino before, it is recommended that you take Ken's beginner class on Saturday to familiarize yourself with the track and etiquette/rules.

you can bring your own, or they're just cheap stock pedals and straps. Monday Night sessions are good for beginners for their first time around the track. Do a monday night, get comfy going around and riding around others, and come on wednesday for some real training.
there are only 3 more wednesday night sessions and its extremely fun

i use look delta pedals, as soon as i order backup pedals im going to drill the pedals for straps.
but you dont have to worry about unclipping. i was sitting behind the motor at 37 in a 46/16 gear inches spinning 165+ rpm and had no issues clipping out. its a workout, not a race so much so not too much aggressive riding, though my foot did unclip once actually from someone else hitting my foot, i just rolled it off, not the end of the world.

dammit, Wednesdays are my roller hockey night...I might swing by on a Monday to check it out...if that fails, I'll spend the 40 bucks for the beginner class, as I have no idea about etiquette on a track...
I'm also asking another friend, that I think rides down in Carson about this type o' stuff....
although Encino...would be on the way home after work...

just from my experience, if you come in with an open ear and can soak up about 15 rules in your head, and can play on those rules you're fine. i got certified for the ADT track by going around 8 laps, and learned to ride with others (who were fairly open to helping out others) and raced the week after. i'm not certain what the monday program brings, but from what i hear there is no structure to the program. I will admit that riding around in fucking ovals gets stuuuuupid boring. wednesday night brings a little bit of the racing excitement and keeping it friendly competition wise.
i train at carson too but their prices are steeper and farther to get to. I have to make it there by 7:30 and 19 miles brakeless in rush hour traffic isn't a bright idea. Plus 20 dollars only covers about a 2 hour session and I have left ADT feeling relatively fresh numerous times. $10 dollar rentals make it a $30 dollar investment for some.
also in getting certified to ride the ADT, as a non-racer your best bet is to go to the accelerated class for $60 instead of the beginners class for $240, but why not learn the rules at encino for cheap and get FREE certification on the day of a race?

pfft damn me, disclaimer but i've only been doing this for 2 MONTHS and i am thinking about this 80% of the time. addiction is too weak a word to describe what riding around on banked ovals means to me. at first i had every reason to not ever associate myself with the track. and literally overnight i picked up a track bike and since that day have barely set foot on my road bike. so damn whoever set up that day for me to get intro to track at ADT. this new hobby has already cost me a lot.

Junu, you are too funny.
by the way, Monday nights at Encino = not so good if you haven't ridden the track before. Stefan, the instructor with yell at you and belittle you and not even in his usual humorous manner. those sessions are structured (that's why it's called "Structured Training" on the website) and usually involve paceline, double paceline, partnerless madison (which gets pretty f'n fast) and whatever other drills Stefan puts you through.
not everyone needs to take the beginner's class to hop on the track but i recommend it just cuz there are some people who should.
oh and Junu, if you were going to pull a foot it wouldn't be while pacing behind a motorcycle. it would be during a standing start or on the first few revs of a hard jump.
