What can/should I do to make my back break strong? as in, stop real good.

I recall hearing the rear break only accounts for about 30% of your total stopping power... which makes sense, you never see people running JUST a rear break. I was looking for something to back me up... and geeked out on these articles for a little bit... but you can see that your rear break will not, by itself, bring you to a complete stop at high speeds or in an emergency.... so maybe your break is fine, and you are expecting it to grab the way the front does... it just wont :/

weld a disc brake tab onto the frame buy a 130mm spaced disc hub lace it up to a 700cc rim of your choosing and put some of these on it.

i ran only a rear brake on my bmx.
the brake shoes i ran were made by kool-stop and they looked like a pair of vans.

Make sure the rim isnt all greasy. Adjust the brakes as close too the rim as possible without rubbing. Make sure you dont have a cable housing that is too long, a toolong cable will flex a lot and waste some of your leverage.

Also, some brake cable housings are metal on the inside. if the bike has spent some nights outdoors the rust onthe inside of the housing may be making it hard for the cable to move inside.

Lastly, Brakes are silly... just put your foot on the ground. Wear shoes.

Brake shoes are all pretty much the same. Adjust your brakes. A quick googling will reveal a number of pages with instructions.

When googling, it will probably help you get more results if you spell the word correctly. A break is what you take twice a day at work. A brake is a device for stopping a bicycle.

If you can skid the rear then the rear brake is already strong enough.

if it feels mushy is might be because you have a lot of cable housing-- the cable housing compresses when you brake, and if you have a run of housing that goes from the lever all the way to the caliper it will feel mushy. Ideally you have a brazeon at the front and a braze on at the back to hold the housing ends, and bare cable for most of the run.

the best pads by a large margin are kool-stop. Salmon colored are good for wet, but black aren't bad, and they used to (and maybe still do) make a mixed one with salmon and black.

but your rear brake isn't responsible for much of your stopping power-- the front brake does most of the work.

what kind of brakes are you talking about? old single pivot road bike or BMX brakes are going to suck no matter what, although with proper adjustment they can get to the point where they kind of almost don't suck.
new road bike brakes or mountain bike V brakes don't really take much adjustment. and cantilevers .. fuck I hate cantilevers.

when i bought my singlespeed new, it came with this shitty little front brake pad, like the kind they used to sell at the bikerowave for $1. i upgraded to a $9 front brake pad and endoed the first week i had it. spend a little money, get some good brake pads and adjust them properly. it's amazing how much stopping power you get when you don't constantly have the shittiest equipment.

other than that, your back brake is never going to be as strong as your front. best case scenario, your back tire will skid. invest in the front and use it cautiously.

I gotta get some proper, V-brake mounting screw-things for my front fork.
The old ones are beyond wear-damage and I have to readjust them every, couple of days.
The dipshit, LBS over here seems to be more interested in having me buy a whole, new fork and go back to front discs.
And people wonder why I don't shop local.
