Thread Box:
new cargo bike
Thread started by campos at 11.3.10 - 12:57 pm

new cargo bike made in north east los Angeles. just finished building my cargo bike using the plans from tom's cargo bikes .com made some changes to his original plane but closely the same prep and tube set up. the most weight i have carried has been 230 pounds. which is pretty difficult to control

Steering system: there reason cables and bike chain do not work so well is due to the bend in the front down tube. cables and bike chain limit your turning. air plan cable well hold it own and will not snap. but a bike chain will go out on you. The best and safest way to go is hime joints. spend the extra 20 bucks and build it right also take the time to properly nouch the tube don’t. Mickey mouse it and stick a bolt to close a space between you improper lay out. correct prep work well lead to a well built cargo bike frame

im selling these cargo bike built and redy to ride if intrested call me or email me at 323-350-4623 stevecampos_1@hotmail.com

or visit me at

Great job! I rode your bike with the shopping basket on it at the polo place. It was hard to steer, but a great concept. Have you rode the Workcycle Bakfiet? If you could ride one (they steer like a dream) and copy their steering mechanism and then spray some Krylon (no prep required spray paint) on in bright colors you would be in business.

Maybe you can ride the Workcycle at Flying Pigeon, take some photos and some notes on how the front steering is made and stabilized and duplicate it. I'm sure bike shops would rather order cargo from local producers than pay huge shipping fees from Amsterdam. http://www.workcycles.com/

Here is a link to Larry vs Harry, they have great colors to inspire you, but they are in Europe and shipping is expensive.

thanks girl power. i have never built a cargo bike using a shopping cart. sound like the work of some kind of artist. like i said before i know of whom you are talking about fuzzbeast made a great sculpture. i have been closely observing the steering system and the frame lay out of the work-cycle bakfiet and im already in the process of having some tubes bended for a new cargo bike frame. again this bike was just the first one there will be more to come and they will only get better. no Mikey mouse bull shit here.

looks good. paul from choppercabras and myself built one earlier this year using the same plans (with a lot of modifications) It was purpose built and my girlfriend and I operated a mobile business selling gourmet freezer pops all summer with it. it's much longer than the average cargo bike, so it took some getting used to, but it's able to carry 100-150 lbs of pops, dry ice and the cooler very well.

paul posted pictures of the rough product here

and here it is in action as the popcycle

we're in the off season now but we'll be back in the spring

good luck.

You guys ever want to see a "real" cargo bike, we've got a pretty nice selection at the shop. Campos has been looking closely at a bunch of the small details on bikes at my shop, you guys are welcome to do the same, maybe try one or two for a ride.

These come from some pretty well developed cargo bike cultures in Holland and Denmark, so they're def. worth a closer look.

If it will benefit anyone's hobby, business idea, etc. please make use of the stuff I've brought here. These machines really can make a big difference in LA.

Plus, I like to show 'em off.

(oh yeah, the shop is Flying Pigeon LA)

Look, talk shit all you want, I don't really understand why you felt the need to in the first place. I built my cargo bike for nothing, it cost me a grand total of 3 dollars, the entirety of which went to a brake cable and housing at the bikerowave. That bike has seen more abuse than most bikes ever will even dream of.
I built it as a mock-up/prototype for some ideas for a future bike I had, and the only flaw, the limit to the steering, has nothing to do with the steering's design, but has to do with a construction flaw (I welded one of the chains a quarter of an inch too low).
I don't really do sketches on paper, I build prototypes and test the shit out of them. I don't take other people's plans, even freely given ones, then talk shit about other people's work. Sure I jumped a gap with a bolt, it's one step up from a cardboard mock up, never intended to be any sort of production model. Even still the fucker is solid, has carried hundreds of pounds with no problems (the day I finished it we carried nearly 300 lbs of wood halfway across town for a bonfire at the beach) and has thousands of miles on it, it some of the most extreme conditions possible, and has been crashed several times. The only parts that have ever broken on that bike were a bent axle and a thrashed cassette on separate occasions, frame's fine, chain driven steering, no problems at all (which makes sense if you think about it, even with a load of several hundred lbs, you can still steer it with your pinky, chain as a drivetrain takes a hell of a lot more stress.

weve got to race in downtown la. its closest for everyone (metro stops), and has the worst traffic.

something silly like pick up a drunk at disney hall, bike them to china town station, pick up piles of bricks in little tokyo, take them to the staples center and sprint back to 5th and spring, but youve got to go through FIDM and pershing square on your way for pickups.

I will fuck all of you up in a cargo bike race.

p.s. You forgot El Jimmy from the Eco Village.and there are a shit load of new cargo bike owners in LA with bakfiets, two guys in DTLA with Bullits, and a bunch of people I've sold cargo tricycles to over the past three years. Dan Koeppel in HLP has a Babboe as well.

Are rear loaders included in this catastrophe? They are a separate weight class no? Or maybe not. If we have to do loaded riding I don't think they'd handle a truck tire as well as some of the Bullit-like longjohn designs.

Box walls are nice but prohibit stable carrying of goods at speed. trucker straps and a good platform are the best.

Oh! And CETMA is set up in Marina Del Rey now.

Man, y'all behind the damn times when it comes to cargo bikes.

Rev1065 probably has a fleet of these in his backyard by now made from forgotten kiddie bikes and the remains of hipster bike crash repairs.

Dope route. We should have to climb on playground equipment in FIDM park. That would make the guards lose their shit.
