I just really can't reply to this woman's rhetoric without losing my temper, and it's evident that she isn't prepared to listen one way or the other. I'm not willing to give her the benefit of the doubt or let anyone plead naivette on her behalf in this case. What a terrible human being. I just don't know where to begin.

Funny how Malibu and Santa Monica and some of these cities have these reputations of being hip or progressive or green but they can't stand cyclists.

But, but... if I drive a Prius and only buy locally-grown organic foods, that makes me green enough, right? I don't have to be nice to those smelly cyclists too, do I?

I think this is a great opportunity to call attention to safety problems in Malibu. Lets offer constructive solutions to make all road users safe. I think that is her goal, though I have to say I think her approach is misguided.

I really can't begin to understand her goal. I'm not convinced there is one. The page is inflammatory and misinformed and while it's great to see all the pro-cyclist comments coming out all I really want is for her to accept that she made a mistake and to take that page down.
But now she and her husband are trolling the comments, saying we think all cyclists are perfect, we don't think tickets should ever be issued to miscreant cyclists, etc. This is just going to devolve into the usual mud-slinging, if it hasn't already.
If anyone has the mad communication/persuasion skillz to get her to meet with some cyclists, preferably at some intersection along PCH so we really can compare cyclist behavior to motorist behavior, please do. Next Saturday would be good.

A number of people are doing exactly that, flooding the FB page with suggestions of where better infrastructure could exist to make it safer for peds and cycilsts...she is completely ignoring them. In fact, she just commented that no one was making any constructive comments, when Gary and Meghan K have been doing nothing but for like 2 days now. And they've both been really positive towards her (more positive than I could be anyhow).
She's just one of those people who has her mind made up. Some people will NEVER ride bikes and NEVER support them. No matter what. If you told them that riding a bike would make them an immediate millionaire, no sale. It's like that YouTube video of the HTC Evo vs iPhone. Brick wall.

Her profile on FB says she's an LAPD reserve. Guess the new cycling sensitivity training hasn't made it to her yet.

Tellem has extended an invitation to really talk in person about the issue, I'll be speaking with her tomorrow to arrange a meeting with cyclists. I think it's best if we start moving toward constructive solutions mode now that we have come in, made noise, stood up for our rights, and now have their attention. I know the comments made were inflammatory to us, and it's tempting to debate points forever on the internet, but this is also an opportunity to begin a real dialogue process. We've already demonstrated pretty clearly that we are motivated and will respond quickly to perceived threats to our rights and the page has already been rendered useless of it's original intent and been entirely co-opted.

That's great. Nice job, Gary. Maybe when you find out new information we can start a new thread for updates, in the spirit of friendship (since this one uses the word "hate").
