Stolen Surly

My black Surly Cross Check, 53cm, rear rack. Stolen from Macarthur Park area. It was chained and locked to a stair railing INSIDE my apartment bldg, and it looks like they BOLT-CUTTERED through the rail. Pissed. Keep an eye out in Macarthur Park/Echo Park/K-Town/DTLA. right now and soon.
The picture is the only one I could find. It does have an unusual setup- BMX crankset, single speed, ergo bars w no tape, bmx levers, canti brakes. There was a rack, might be taken off soon.
Shoot them on site. This bike was given to me as a gift by someone really amazing in our MR community as a gift after my first Surly (on which I toured LA to NYC) was stolen last year. Wow.

This is sad news, especially since it happened to Marcus.
I guess now, in addition to a cable AND U-lock, we'll have to lock up only to really solid, uncut-able objects.
Sad.

And make sure those objects aren't covered with stickers, as apparently some thieves are cutting racks, then throwing stickers over the gaps, so when somebody locks up a bike, they just peel back the stickers, lift the lock through, and bail.
Very sad.

Just tweeted, I @'d them.. thanks.
This is my 4th bike to be stolen in 5 years in LA. I've had one stolen each way: unlocked in a backyard, cable-locked, straight-up jacked, now locked inside my bldg. Maybe I could've prevented all except the jacking, but I shouldn't have to be so extreme. Wtf. Someone came INSIDE of my building and cut a part of the building for my bike. Each time counts as one point for Portland. Bummed. I want to love this city so much, but why does it make it so hard? Is LA built on Indian Bicycle Burial Grounds?

I remember at least 1 of your other bikes being stolen. And your bike jacking. But Portland --- NOOOOOOO! (nothing against Portland. Just hate to lose you to Portland)
I assume you're also filing a police report??

Forgot. It's a pretty egregious theft. At some point, you might want to consider posting it on the Bikeside LA bike map.

sorry for your loss... how long was it outside??
there are certain areas in Los Angeles that I won't go on my bicycle anymore... because it's not safe to lock it up... even for a short amount of time

I always keep my bike in my apartment. There are too many thieves out there. You can't leave your bike locked and unattended for more than a couple of hours.

Thanks everybody. I don't really have too much to say. I'm going to report as soon as I get the serial today. I'm building a normal tall bike for a bit as my regular bke. Any old frames out there?

For free:
I have an extra frame but it's a very small mountain bike frame and so it probably isn't the best choice for a tall bike. However, you might be able to use it for parts (it still has the back wheel and cranks with euro bottom bracket). Also, I have some left over 1" round tubing and miscellaneous parts left over from my tall bike project.
For $30:
I have a complete bike that would be a great candidate for a tall bike. I bought it to build into a tall bike but went with another bike instead. It's an early Schwinn Mesa Runner. Schwinn's first attempt at a mountain bike. I would offer it for free but I paid $60 for it (but I believe I got raped on the deal) so I'd let it go for $30 which seems more reasonable, if you want it. I have a pic if you want to see it.
If you think you might need any of this stuff, it's yours. Just let me know and I'll even bring it to you.

Sorry to hear about your bike Marcooos. Hope you find it. There is no reason you or anyone else should be getting their shit jacked. Good luck. Keep an eye out for people behaving weirdly around you in your bldg.

I have a padlocked garage with no car in it, but I won't keep my bike in it. Bike must come indoors. What a waste! But you can't leave your bike anywhere, not even in your own f'in garage.
Sorry, Marcus, I have an extra bike if you need a ride.

This is totally what me and my friends do when we ride somewhere together! Bring as many locks as we can and make it fucking impossible to dismantle all our bikes together. Love this pic!
