tape, gloves, or both

do you prefer bar tape, gloves, or both?
and more importantly, why?
...ramble... have bar tape on the roadie and no tape on the fixed. i like the tape on the road bike and have an inclination to use gloves on the raw bar fixed. Im not sure why the difference - if it has to do with the differnt ways you pull on the bars when slowing down fixed or if i just like how the chrome looks on the fixed (although i think lots of other bikes look great with the right tape). when in first saw someone riding fixed no tape or gloves i thought that would be both uncomfortable and slippery with palm swet, both i have not had that problem
obviously if you are going to put in 60 + miles you would want to have one or the other. does the decision depend on what other factors.
basically, do you prefer bat tape, gloves, or both?
and why?
and if you wear gloves, do you prefer regular leather grip or the more plastic kind? and why?

I ride a road bike and I like the look of my bars without tape, but with the miles that I usually put into my bike its stupid to only wear gloves because they end up tearing up WAY faster than if i were using both. ill get around to taping up my bars but for now i'll keep sewing up all the holes in my gloves :P

I like using some kind of grip on all my bars. On my road bike I use Cinelli cork ribbon. I've tried many other tapes and I always go back to cork. I like it because it has good grip (even when wet), kills vibration, and absorbs sweat. It also lasts a very long time when you wrap it right. On my track bike I use a sewn on leather covering on the drops only. I used to use Keirin grips but they would eventually wear out and crack. On the track you spend most of your time in the drops so covering the entire bar isn't necessary. The track is also smoother than the road so you don't need to vibration damping of cork. I just wish I could get down to the track more often... On my other road bike I've been using the new Cinelli gel cloth tape. It's really nice even without gloves and it looks great. For gloves, I like Pearl Izumi Pittards leather gloves. I like leather gloves because they break in and get really comfortable like a baseball glove. They also seem to absorb sweat better than synthetic gloves. They also grip well in the rain. The best reason to wear gloves is so if you crash you don't mess up your hands. I really like my hands.

I'm either always looking for my gloves or losing them, so I prefer tape.

That's funny—I'm still using those gloves I got from you at the DADA spoke card party. My all-time favorite cycling gloves by far!

Definitely recommend Spenco Ironman Tour gloves. They've lasted me for two years now and because they are intended for Ironman contestants they have Shocktek padding that maintains blood flow in the hands yet absorbs TONS of road shock.
I ride a fixed with shitty bar tape then wrap that with white medical tape. By doing so all I have to replace is the white medical tape from the dollar store and my bar tape stays pristine.
That is all.

my gloves make my hands smell like a fucking corpse.
srsly, i'd rather lick a grubby asshole than my hands after riding.

Aftershave or D.O. on the palms solved that problem for me.
As for gloves, I continually sew up the holes before they get beyond repair.
As for tape, mtb with high psi's here so rubber grips.
