I thought this forum would be a good place to throw out a plug for the Friday Night Skate group, as I feel there is similar sentiment in reclaiming the streets for human powered transit. I know some people on the west side have heard of them, and Dan, our fearless leader, sometimes skates with the Santa Monica critical mass. We usually meet at the Santa Monica Pier canon, meet time 8:30, roll out around 9:00. Tunes are provided by a surprisingly powerful backpack sound system using an energy efficient car stereo system and iPod.

I also skated at the last Sins and Sprockets ride after our once every other month downtown skate. There were at least a couple people that seemed interested in the group on that ride, and I'd love to see some cross pollination between the bike folks and skaters.

We skate a relatively brisk pace, at least as fast as a social bike ride, and for some stretches, faster. For this reason I would recommend having experience and confidence in skating, but we are a friendly bunch who aren't going to start dropping people. The Santa Monica route, which is our usual skate, is intentionally designed in a sort of figure eight so that the half way point is right by the start point. So anyone not feeling up to completing the whole route can cut out easily.

This Fridays skate, August 31st, KTLA is supposed to show up to film some segments of our skate. We ran into one of their news vans filling up for gas at one of our stopping points. They were really curious about what was going on, so one of the skaters gave contact info, and apparently they responded, saying they would come out.

I know there's a lot of bike rides this Friday, but if you have a strong latent desire to get on some skates, suppressed by lack of friends that were interested, then come out, should be a fun one this week.
