ANOTHER QUESTION FOR YOU FOOLS

ive been itching a fisheye but i cant scrape up 6 hundo so easily

but

ive found these fisheye opteka lenses. they have reviews with ratings up and down, has anyone used these lenses before?

i was also told bout maybe purchasing some old ass russian fisheye by zenitar, are those still being made?

@chynna
text tool photoshop, idk why i didnt think of that before, oy.

KiMS1
01.16.09 - 2:41 pm

reply

seriously,
water marks are tacky.
give people low res images
and make them pay for hi-res

.....

there is a reason why fisheye lenses are so expensive compared to screw on filters.

Chynna's lens is amazing. Looks great.

If you get a screw on filter you will sacrifice sharpness, contrast, brightness, and get edge distortion.

That said, it is its own thing ... tons of skate videos have been shot, packaged and sold with those crappy fisheye filters.

One cool thing about the screw on filter, you will probally stick it on a zoom lens and be able to get a range of bugged out looks with it.

If you buy one at some "big box" electronics store, you can try it out on your camera, do some tests and decide weather it is work keeping.

well on the topic of screw-on lenses...
i happened to think theyre INCREDIBLE. however, i have both a canon 15mm 2.8 and a screw type fisheye that i stack on a 50mm 1.2
With the screw-on-fisheye, you can get crazy ass Depth Of Field when shooting in the sweet-spot aperature (in this particular scenario it would be anywhere from f3.5 to f8) and the chromatic abberations that occur on the outer edges gives the image hazy dreamlike feel. I think it looks very filmic because it also gives a hefty vignette as the light falls off on the edges. I use a titanium IR screw-type fish, than i scratched to high heaven. Makes everything lomorific. heres an example:

Candy Cane

also: the titanium IR type (ruby front-element coating) bows out the color nicely. everything on the outer edges is cold blues and the middle is a warm red, becuase of the way the light is bending through the aura-borealis coating

i use my fisheye with the aforementioned 28-105 portrait lens because it gives me a full image like this.

personally, i think watermarks are cheezy... like, i only shoot film. i put my photos up online, and if someone happens to steal my images and claim them as theirs, let them. fuck it. cuz i have the negatives to prove that they're mine...

other than that, watermarking digital photographs is relatively easy, i imagine. i've never done it before, but i'm pretty certain you just go on photoshop, open your image, create a duplicated layer of the background copy, then a new layer for the text and then change the opacity of the text. then save as.

ANOTHER PHOTO QUESTION

so, i have to do a shoot at a banquet in a month.

the banquet luncheon is at noon.

the banquet hall is a huge round room with windows all along the perimeter.

at noon, the sun is high, its bright outside, but the room is a bit dark and they turn on the lamps.

the head table for the banquet is placed infront of some of the windows.

how can i shoot the guests at the head table with the bright outside view behind them,

1. without overexposing the windows/outside
2. without underexposing the headtable/subject inside.
3. i do not have access to any HDR software but i do use an older version of PS

the lens i will be using that day are

18-55 f/3.5
50 f/1.8
100-300 3.5

and will have a 580EX flash

idk, perhaps you know of some trick with a combination of whatever lens and flash setting.

these are two solutions i have dont know if it would work

1. use an off camera flash and try hard to make sure there is no reflection of the flash in the window panes.

2. expose for the outside, and use a reflecting disc to fill in subject and hopefully he/she is not underexposed.

if anybody has suggestions, gimme a helping hand!!!!

word.

the flash im hesitant bout bc i dont want to get that glare off the glass, but i was thinking if i popped it from off to the side, the glare spot may be out of frame.

u know how those discs have a silver side and gold side?

is that just for giving off a certain color tint or is one side brighter than the other?

I don't mean to be contrary, but you need to use a larger aperture, not a smaller one. Especially if you don't have sufficient lighting that you can control. Use a faster shutter speed so you don't soak up as much ambient from all those windows.

You also really need more lights.

You've also got a white balance problem with the sunlight from outdoors and the undoubtedly fluorescent lights inside. You might want to try a green color correcting gel on your flash(es) and set your white balance for fluorescent. Hopefully, you can compose your shots in such a way as to not show the windows much since they're going to look a bit magenta with that WB setting.

Mike -

I don't really see white balance as an issue if you shoot RAW. I shot this at the FundERSTORM Facebook wedding, with an on camera flash and the orange lighting in the background. Adjust it for a nice white balance in your subjects and you can get an interesting contrast with the background.

Don't know what to do about your exposure issues - fill flash or an off camera flash could help, but I would let them be a little blown out = don't go crazy.

I tend to think in terms of "movie set" lighting solutions, so here's some options:

1. Take the tip from Gern and bring down the outside brightness by sticking ND gels on the windows. They come in 4' rolls in strengths of 0.3, 0.6, 0.9, and 1.2

or

2. Increase the brightness of the inside lighting to balance out the exterior backlight. This is tough; it involves a lot of lights (that tend to be hot) and finding ways to rig them so that people still have room to move around.

or

3. Have art department fix your problem (heh, in this case 'you') by dressing those windows. Perhaps a backdrop? banner? curtains/drapes?

I don't know if shooting shooting RAW is gonna save you here. What's the maximum latitude for RAW: 8 stops? maybe 10? If the banquet hall is dimly lit and the fill side of your subjects is at F2 for example, and if it's sunny outside so that their backlight is like F22 you've got problems that software ain't gonna be able to fix.

As for using flash, I think that's a fine option for closer shots. However, if they want you out of the way and decide to stick you in the back of the room, I'm not sure if an onboard flash is gonna have enough 'throw'.

Good luck!

Yeah instead of all that maybe you should just ask them to replace the windows for the event. Or maybe you can just hire extras who are lighter skinned, or better yet unicorns, those are easy to shoot.

another question for you photogs

this time, it's a question regarding moving cars.

how are panning shots done with such low/high angles?

here are a few examples

http://www.flickr.com/photos/scottdukes/3072424767/in/set-1717410/

are rigs needed to attach to another car going the same speed?

do folks hang outside the doors while shooting?

another question for photogs

i recently purchased the canon 28mm f/1.8 usm lens.

do any of you have this lens?

if so, how do you like it?

maybe i shoulda asked this before purchase but it looks pretty cool to me.

here is the lens

dude, yes pick up that lens.

its super fun and for 90-100 bucks, its just, idk, just something really nice to have hahaha.

that's kinda become my primary lens but it's not wide enough for my liking since i dont have a full sensor camera, hence the purchase of the 28mm.

regardless, it's a super sick lens and since its on the cheaper side, it's a nice beater lens too.

QUESTION

what's the easiest way to see if my monitor is color corrected properly?

i've noticed that my photos look different on different monitors and when printed, theyre a bit off too.

can't tell if my monitor needs to be fixed, or if i was using a shitty printing service.

every monitor is different and as is every printer.
i don't know any "easy" ways to calibrate them.
I know pro calibration can cost thousands.

Usually I look at a print, make the necessary changes
when i get it fixed, i take note of the changes and make a print setting or an action so I can apply those changes as a starting point for the next print.

I've never used it, but the least expensive calibrator i know of is the "Huey"

1.) what's the easiest way to see if my monitor is color corrected properly?

A color calibration device, such as the Gretag Macbeth Eye-One. These things include hardware, like an optical sensor you place on the screen, and software, a program that puts your screen through color and contrast tests. Just so you know, these devices aren't cheap. It's also worth pointing out that if you want to do this right, calibration is not a one time affair. Some of the higher-end graphic design firms calibrate their monitors weekly, but you should be doing it at least monthly.

2a.) i've noticed that my photos look different on different monitors and 2b.) when printed, theyre a bit off too.

That's gonna happen. The average person will never calibrate their monitor, so you have no control over how your image looks on other people's computers. You also need to be aware that Macs and Windows typically use different gammas for their displays, so the *same* image will often look different on an Apple machine compared to a PC.

As for printing, that's a whole separate issue. Monitors have a much greater color depth and contrast latitude than what's possible with physical printing. If you're proofing photos on your computer and want it to match how it will look when printed, then you're gonna need to some extra work. First you will need an ICC printer profile. Depending on where you get your photos printed, they may be able to provide you with one. I print most of my stuff at Costco, and they actually offer ICC printer profiles for you to download (for most of their locations). Once you get this printer profile, you can then load it into Photoshop. From their it's simply a matter of applying this soft-proof condition while working on your images.

3.) can't tell if my monitor needs to be fixed, or if i was using a shitty printing service.

Little of both maybe?

Calibrating is really really easy, paying for it is less easy. Unless you have clients who are paying you to have color accurate shots just try not to worry about it too much.

i've noticed that on mac's my photos look a tad bit more saturated.

when getting photos printed at places like walgreen or getting it delivered through snapfish, the photos are WAY saturated.

A&I prints them out great and the color is the way i want it to be but way too expensive.

are the equipment that flick/walgreens have just not up to par? or is A&I redoing the color after I submit?

to my knowledge, A&I won't work on the color when I submit online via direct to print.

half the en masse labs (walgreen, snapfish) will do an automatic color, etc. 'correction' that fucks things up--even when you tell them not do do ANY modifications -they do it anyways

You need to get a profile, if you can, for the printer and paper they use at Walgreens and apply them to your photographs before you bring them in, if you want accurate reproduction. I know you can do this at Costco.

The only place I recommend for cheap printing is costco. They're decent quality for cheap. Everything else is seriously only for something shot by a disposable camera or snapshots from a compact digital camera. Basically for people who aren't looking for the quality in a print of a photo edited in photoshop.
If you want the best everything, I suggest you buy a really nice Mac and a really expensive Epson printer and then you'll be happy. But that's just my wishlist.

Mike, I already gave you a reference site to check out.

http://www.drycreekphoto.com/

This place pretty much covers everything you need to know. They're the ones who offer the ICC printer profiles for Costco's machines. They also have articles regarding monitor calibration and how to install printer profiles into Photoshop (from ver.6 to CS 3).

Like I said before, not every shop is going to offer printer profiles. Building a printer profile costs money, and most shops that do *not* cater to professional and/or semi-professional photographers aren't going to pay the money to have it done.

Regarding Snapfish, Walgreens, and almost every other big photo lab, hitsthepoles_ow is right. These places all perform some sort of "automatic image correction". This is because they assume that most people who take photos don't know anything about color temperature or proper exposure (and for the most part they are right).

Snapfish is supposed to have an option somewhere where you can tell them to not 'correct' your image. I don't know exactly where this is found, but I've heard that it does exist. In general, places like this tend to hide these options in the most obscure places; so you may have to hunt around in your account preferences or something.

A little bird told me that A&I likes it when you assign your files to Adobe RGB (1998). When you get DTPs, all we do is convert your files to the output profile for the paper. When in doubt, you can work in sRGB because it's closer to the gamut of the papers. I like to work in Adobe because it's bigger, and I feel that it gives me more control. Costco actually does a good job if you use those Dry Creek profiles (I never said that!).

The S90 is the king of P&S compacts with that big sensor and fast lens. However it's pretty dirty that they crippled it with only standard def video, it's capable of shooting gorgeous 720p if they weren't afraid of cannibalizing their higher end camera sales.
