Bicyclist killed in Pasadena hit-and-run
Thread started by alicestrong at 09.20.11 - 4:09 am

PASADENA - An Alhambra man was arrested after he allegedly ran over a woman who fell off her bicycle early Sunday morning.
The woman later died of her injuries at a local hospital.

Nicholas Avila, 21, was booked on suspicion of hit-and-run and driving under the influence, said Pasadena police Lt. Pete Hettema

He was being held at Pasadena police jail in lieu of $100,000 bail.

Hettema said a 24-year-old Oregon woman and her boyfriend were riding their bicycles in the 200 block of Los Robles Avenue shortly after 1 a.m., Sunday.

The woman fell off her bicycle and was struck by a vehicle as she's lying on the street, Hettema said. The driver didn't stop.

Hettema said a witness followed the hit-and-run vehicle to Alhambra and called police. The driver was then arrested.

Man arrested for vehicular manslaughter

An Alhambra man was arrested for vehicular manslaughter Sunday after his car struck and killed a woman who had fallen off her bicycle, Pasadena Police Lt. Randell Taylor said.

Nicholas Jeremy Avila, 21, was arrested by police on Sunday after his car allegedly struck Jocely Young, 24, of Alhambra, Taylor said. Avila is believed to hawve been drunk at the time of the collision, police said.

Young and her boyfriend were riding their bicycles at about 1 a.m. on Los Robles Avenue near Cordova Street when she fell off her bike. Young then was struck by a Dodge pickup truck traveling south on Los Robles Avenue. The driver of the truck continued south on Los Robles without stopping. Pasadena paramedics responded and took Young to Huntington Memorial Hospital, where she later died of her injuries.

Several witnesses called police to notify them about the accident. One witness followed the suspect into Alhambra. Pasadena police officers contacted Avila there and found he was under the influence of alcohol, Lt. Taylor said.

Avila, who is in custody at the Pasadena jail, is expected to be arraigned Tuesday.

I wonder why she initially crashed, and how long was she lying in the street before she was struck.

It's really sad. I ride there a lot.

The spot where she was killed is where two narrow lanes merge into one on Los Robles. South-bound drivers typically race each other to get the pole position as they make their way to the Arroyo Seco Parkway or use Los Robles Avenue to get to Alhambra. Don't know if that is the case here, but the conditions are eerily similar to where a cyclist was killed in July on 8th Street at the 110 Freeway on-ramp.

You're right, it does narrow. So much for a "Bike Route"

Big thanks to Aktive and Bike Oven for making a proper memorial to Jocelyn Young. It looks great on Los Robles and Cordova.

On a pissed-off note, according to Pasadena Star News, the suspect has been released WITHOUT being charged:

Alhambra hit-and-run suspect released pending further investigation
Staff Reports
Posted: 09/20/2011 07:14:57 PM PDT

PASADENA - An Alhambra man who was arrested after he allegedly ran over a woman who fell off her bicycle early Sunday and then fled was released Tuesday afternoon pending further investigation, Pasadena police said.

Nicholas Avila, 21, was booked on suspicion of hit-and-run and driving under the influence and was held at Pasadena police jail in lieu of $100,000 bail before his release.

The victim, who later died from her injuries at Huntington Hospital, was identified Tuesday as 24-year-old Jocelyn Young of Alhambra.

"It's a real tragic accident and a complex case, and we have to make sure we're taking our time to make sure that every aspect of the case is thoroughly investigated before we present our case to the D.A.'s Office," Traffic Lt. Randell Taylor said.

Police officers are required to file charges within 48 hours of the suspect's arrest or must release him, he said.

Young and her boyfriend had left a local bar Sunday and were riding bicycles south on Los Robles Avenue, just south of Cordova Street, when Young fell off her bicycle and was run over about 1 a.m., Taylor said.

Witnesses are being interviewed and video surveillance from the incident must still be examined and analyzed, he said.

"We like to err on the side of caution and be thorough," Taylor said.

A witness followed the hit-and-run vehicle to Alhambra and called police. The driver was then arrested, officials have said.

A group of bike riders said Tuesday that they were planning to have a memorial ride later that night from Highland Park to Los Robles Avenue where they will mark the incident with a "ghost bike," an all white bike that is locked to a street sign and accompanied by a placard.

Just throwing it out there from another point of view that the police may be looking at....it was dark out and if witnesses say he didn't stop at all, could mean the driver wasn't aware he hit someone. If he did stop or apply his brakes or slowed down and was visibly aware of what occured, then it's a different story. I'm just assuming it may end up an involuntary manslaughter case maybe worse if he's proven to be drunk driving.

maybe he grazed her head, or her body and she was thrown into shock, low blood pressure, etc...nobody knows yet.

no need to jump to any conclusions...but i may be all wrong too.

I'd really like to know how this goes. And more specifics about what actually went down.

I visited the site on Tuesday. It just doesn't make sense how she got run over. How the fuck could the guy not know he ran over somebody? Because he was fucking drunk is why! ... If you hit somebody, you pull over, you get out, and you DEAL with your actions. Anything else and you deserve your life to get royally fucked over.

People are self-serving assholes.

Pasadangerous!

PASADENA - A man was killed Thursday night when his bicycle and a car collided.
The 61-year-old died of his injuries at Huntington Memorial Hospital, said Pasadena Lt. Pete Hettema. He said the bicyclist wasn't wearing a helmet.

The man's name wasn't released because his family hadn't been notified yet.

Hettema said the crash happened at 6:13 p.m. at Colorado Boulevard and Terrace Drive.

The bicyclist was riding eastbound on the sidewalk of Colorado Boulevard. He collided in the crosswalk with an Audi making a left turn from westbound Colorado Boulevard.

Hettema said the driver, a 29-year-old Pasadena man, stayed at the scene. He wasn't injured.

Radar-activated speed bumps and automatic kill switches that shut off the car when a collision is detected by the ECU on the vehicle!!!

These will be the only somewhat, sure-fire ways a suspect will be stifled from fleeing the scene like a Frog.

The exact point where she got hit is where los robles merges from 2 lanes to 1 lane. Its a popular route for cars getting on the 110, so there is a lot of traffic. When we were there Tuesday night there were numerous incidents of 2 cars racing to beat each other. The reporter there taking pictures got jolted numerous times standing in the street trying to get a good shot of the ghost bike, and commented on how dangerous it was at that exact point. And ironically I think Los Robles has street signs labeling it a bike route.
