What is a "Critical Mass"?

We were asked this question today on Bike Talk and I said/say that a "critical mass" is 4-10 people ... thats all it takes to take a lane and feel much safer on the road.
So an LACM like last night is 100-200 mini critical masses waiting to happen.

that what it seems... they are mini critical masses that unify into that one evening.... most ppl go in their small groups.... and converge on the last friday of the month.... at the stop in exposition park...ppl were on their cell phones trying to locate their smaller circle of friends....
i know some people go alone... but there are a lot of min ciritcal masses happening...

This was a quote from the LAist today...
"Yeah, we were downtown grabbing dinner and saw what looked like thousands of bicycles riding through the streets. For a brief moment, it made Amsterdam look like a car city."
That's one of the things Critical Mass is. It creates a "what if" moment...
