Bur seriously, if your wrists hurt perhaps your bike doesn't fit you or you need to adjust seat or bar height.

Don't be a fool, invest in foot retention right now. Stop worrying about messing up your shoes. If you wanna go the extra mile then get an spd setup.
Get rid of those stupid dildo bars, they aren't cool, & they're probably the biggest contributor of your wrists hurting. Get a pair of drop bars.

sounds like you've already figured out that your frame is too small for you, such that you are putting too much weight forward on your wrists. throwing on some riser bars might help a bit but as mentioned, risers/flats are no good for rides exceeding 20 miles or so. might help if you lowered your seat a bit so that more weight is shifted backward, but this comes with a tradeoff in power/pedaling efficiency, and if you're pushing hard or doing a lot of miles, lower saddle height would be bad for your knees.

My first handle bars on my current bike were "flop and chop" bull horns.
They worked for a while, but I started to have some wrist pain.
I tried a few different things, and eventually settled for some real bullhorns, they weren't super expensive either ... I think tehya re called Jae Chen or ... I got them at 020.
After that i also had stretch my wrists alot, and try to be careful about my laptop use.
You also have to be careful about what you do with your hands while you are sleeping.
If you curl your hands up certain ways ... your wrists may never get a rest.
If you get carpel tunnel it is really painful, so its best to deal with wrist pain early.
Figure out what bars are most comfy for you, and whatever bike sizing things you need to figure out ... and make sure you give your wrists a chance to heal.
It may require cutting down your riding a bit .

Get yourself a comfortable bike! Goodness, cycling does not have to involve aches and pains, if it does then you're on a bad bike. The Breukelen by Batavus is at the Flying Pigeon bike shop on Figueroa St. in Highland Park. Take it for a test ride, you will fall in love with it, buy it and ride it and leave aches and pains behind. You won't have to deal with gears, chains or breaks because they are all enclosed, it's powder coated - FIVE times - that means you can leave it in the rain for 100 years and it won't rust - just hop on it and ride, ride, ride.

I know that cycling is not only a serious addiction, it is also a most practical; way to get around.
However if you are feeling pain, you need to deal with the causes, and also let your body rest and heal when it hurts so you don't cause a long term injury.
When you have swelling in the wrist and ignore the pain, it can cause a chronic situation where the swelling and inflammation become self perpetuating and are extremely painful. At that point some people need to get surgery.
I'm not any kind of expert, so take my words with a grain of salt.
I'm just speaking from the experience for somebody who was suffering wrist pain for a while.
If you cut back on wrist stress where every you can (limit your bike riding, video game playing, and keyboard use, as much as possible) reduce the swelling after activities with ice and / or the natural anti-inflammatory: arnica montana. This will help.
You need to get to a point where your wrist isn't hurting, so you can figure out what is causing it. Once it is inflamed ... it can be self perpetuating.
A visit to the doctor could easily add up to 1-3 years worth of bus fares ... so keep that in mind.
Don't let your ego prevent your ability to ride a bike when you are older.

do you ride with gloves that have padding on the palms? if not, try a set of gloves also...
did you try raising the stem a little? if your knees are already comfortable, i wouldn't recommend lowering the seat
handle bars that have drops have lots of places to move and rest your hands, and help you shift your weight around....
since you have suicide bars, you might try shifting forward and backward on your seat...even 1/4 inch or 1/2 an inch will change the pressure on your hands and wrists... what you don't want to do is ride two hours with your hands in the same exact position

Yes, ditch the gaybar and get something that doesn't force all your weight on your hands/wrists. Ditch the fixed gear and get a real bike, enjoy riding for riding's sake, not just as a fashion accessory. Track bikes are for riding in the velodrome for short duration sprints, a traditional road bike would be a lot more suited to long distance riding. There are three different Bruekelen models, only one, comes in light weight aluminum. And, keep in mind that Dutch style bike geometry makes a huge difference in how weight is translated.
Again, don' t knock it til you try it, there is a subway exit a block away from The Flying Pigeon bike shop. If you test this bike I promise you you will change your tune.
Girl Power08.20.10 - 1:58 pm

P.S. Geometry effects weight. For instance, the Bruekelen actually feels lighter to me than my 25 pound bike that I normally ride. It has to do with how the gears are ratioed and how your body sits on the bike that cause those extra twenty or so pounds to dissapear. I can go up Marmion Way (hill) at Figueroa in third gear, I don't even need to go to 2 or 1, and mind you I'm not young, fit or thin!
Trust me, it's hard to explain, but if you test rode this bike you would see what I'm talking about. =)

post a picture of your bike, then i can give you better suggestions. its not the "bike" but your geometry. also 54cm is probably not too small, top tube length matters more anyways and i know at least with modern cannondales they run longer top tubes for a more race like geometry which is less comfortable. try tilting your saddle up, you dont want to be holding yourself up on it which is what is sounds like your doing.
larsenf08.20.10 - 4:43 pm

also you can move your saddle forward which will put your more upright. unless you are mashing 100% everywhere you go the more upright you are the more comfortable it will be.

Ignore the assholes who are bashing me for attempting to offer you some friendly advice, and give a different type of bike a test run.
It's *free* to test ride a bike, you don't have anything to loose by taking it for a test, all the idiots who are being nasty about my suggestion have not even tested out the bike I"m suggesting. They are just being rude because they can get away with it.
If you don't like it then don't buy it. Simple! Easy! But, at least you will have the information to make an informed decision and there is nothing wrong with that. I promise you you will not notice or care about the extra weight, it's just a number on a spec sheet, do don't get hung up on it, geometry is what really affects comfort.
Girl Power08.20.10 - 4:54 pm

i agree with Girl Power on the geometry bit.
i agree with everyone else on the weight bit.
unfortunately, we do not have off-the-shelf daily-ridden bikes that are not 30+lbs or beach cruiser/chopper geometry. unfortunately cycling in the US is still considered a novelty, and the major makers cater to the various performance/recreation niches but not to the commuters. most off-the-shelf commuter bikes are variations of some mountain bikes/hybrids or beach cruisers, while most "urban" fixed gear bikes are still too aggressive for casual riding. mostly all you see at walmart/target are crappy bmx's and mtb's, which reflects our society's views of bicycles as novelty items.
tfunk408 responding to a

08.20.10 - 7:01 pm

Thanks, but try to bear in mind that comfort is more about geometry than weight, a good commuter bike that is made with high-quality parts and that does not cause aches and pains weighs exactly as much as it needs to weigh. You can't tell that one car weights twenty pounds more than another car, it's how it's made that makes one car faster and a lighter on the road, the same can be said of certain bikes. Gear ration, geometry play a much greater role than people realize.
I'm not thin or fit and I commute by bike, I tested out every bike on the market for three years before getting the one I got. The Giant Simple Seven 25 pound beach cruiser which has Dutch style geometry, as opposed to beach cruiser geometry, and had I tested out the Bruekelen I would have purchased that one instead.
I can ride from Hollywood to the Santa Monica Pier and back in total comfort, I could not ride for more than fifteen minuets on a fixie, mountain bike or Schwinn, Masai, Specialized road bikes due to the extreme discomfort of my body on the bike. It did not matter that they were a bit lighter, the discomfort far outweighed the extra weight, and like I said, the Bruekelen does not *feel* like it weighs more than twenty pounds or so when you're riding it. Six million Dutch bicycle commuters can't all be wrong. =)

No, I was saying that for the cost of an $1100 aluminum Dutch bike, you could get a faster and more comfortable bike for a fraction of the price.
Aluminum is definitely stiff, but just about any bike (short of extreme time-trial bikes, etc.) can be set up to be reasonably comfortable with a little imagination and common sense, usually for WAY less than $1100.
If you like the feel of a beach cruiser, and have the $, then a Dutch bike might be a good fit, as Girl Power has pointed out.

Foldie, I'm not "spouting bs", I'm giving my opinion. So stop being an abusive asshole, k? You've got serious issues. The Dutch ride more than 2.8 miles per day. And most people in LA don't commute 35 miles to and from a job.
To the OP, if you are traveling nearly a half century per day then you are in the vast minority of bike commuters. You may wish to try the Gazelle Innergy e-assist bike, or the Schwinn Tailwind. The first had Dutch, NOT beach cruiser, style geometry and the second it more akin to a road bike. they have pedelec assist which means that you adjust how much help you want and you only get it when you're pedding, the end result is like having a a bike with about 38 years, or riding with a nice tailwind on your back. You don't feel like you're being pulled along on an e-bike because pedelec assist bikes only offer juice in small amounts depedning on how hard you pedal.
The Gazelle is at The Flying Pigeon and the Schwinn Tailwind is at Metropolis Bikes in North Hollywood.
And Foldie, I would appreciate it if you would stop butting in to my conversation with the OP. Each person can give him whatever advice they like, we are talking to him, not to you. Got it? You ASS!

to 2.5 km in the Netherlands (see Figure 2). Denmark (1.6 km) and Germany (0.9
