Cyclist dies in Newport Beach

NEWPORT - The bicyclist that died after he crashed on Spyglass Hill Road at Harbor Ridge Drive Thursday morning has been identified, police said.
Michael William Nine, 47, from Santa Ana, died after crashing with a white Chevy stakebed truck, according to police.

Man, I am getting tired of helping install Ghost Bikes.

Creative Thing is simply saying that it is really upsetting to be hearing about a cyclists getting killed. He has installed memorials for 4 fallen riders already. It's starting to get really upsetting that this is getting so frequent. Sorry if you think that is douchey to feel that way.

From what I gather from the postings to the original story, made by a rider who was with Michael at the time, a group of 4 riders were descending a steep hill at about 40 mph, when the went through a curve. Coming out of the curve, they came upon a truck backing up at a 45 degree angle to the riders. The truck was in the bike lane as well as the right traffic lane. They had to make a quick decision and Michael veered to the left and into the rear of the truck.
Tragic at any rate, and yes, we need to ride defensibly at all times.
