Hub Help!

Last night my hub bearings popped loose as I was riding.
So today I replaced the balls from an extra hub I had laying around.
How many bearings are supposed to be on each side? I stuffed the bearings in allowing for a total of 11 bearings per side.
It spins perfectly when I hold the wheels with my hands
but the problem is that when I tighten the wheel to my bike, it refuses to spin.
What's wrong with my bike? :(

Bearings are probably wrong sized.
Compare them to the ones you took off.

does the hub have any pitting in it? and did you pack it full of new grease?

Also, tightening the cones is an art. A tiny bit too loose and the wheel will wobble. Too tight and the wheel will bind.
Your local bike co-op should get you running in no time.

if its a rear its usually 9 bearings depending on the size and the year/make of the hub or 11 bearings in the front, but an easy way to think about it is you can put as many as you can then take one bearing out.. also you should check the pitting in the balls and the cups...
another issue you may be having is tightening the cups too much on the bearings and that will allow for less movement but since i assume your not working on a high end roadbike you probably dont have a rear quick release and therefor you should be getting proper tightness on your cups or you can throw the whole thing off.
you should probably take it to your local co-op or a bike store to check the tightness...
