VENICE GANG PROBLEMS
Thread started by shotgun_mike at 10.5.10 - 3:22 am

Ok, here it goes. I have a friend who is friends with the dude (ex pro skater) from venice. If fact most people call him "the mayor of venice". I think it was on the 21st....some fixies , were hanging out by the venice skate park, drinking or whatever. The dude comes out and asks them to leave and a fight etc breaks out. The guy ends up getting beat down and pepper sprayed. This dude who got bashed is OG V13. The gangsters came to him and he told his homies he didnt want retaliation. The V13 said basically fuck that. Them and the shoreline crips have a green light out for those dudes who were involved, but also to groups of fixie style bikes in the area. Thats all i know. Hot zones include venice, santa monica and culver city. Stay safe. Im trying to negotiate and get groups together to talk this out, but i dont know who the fixie crew was....taco tuesday? ANyhow, lets try to get some peace on the streets.

Some of the riders involved posted their side of the story in a thread on LAFixed.

RiderN September 23:

"Ok, i was there when everything went down i heard stories, but im sticking to mine
because i was there and it's what i witnessed...

How it started:
A local gang came up to us and threatened us aggressively leave by telling us they had knives, i went over to see what was going on, there were about 5 V13 members approaching towards a fellow rider threatening to pull a knife on all of us and someone is going to get seriously hurt .( Anyone would have pulled something out to defend themselves) our fellow rider pulled out a taser gun and pointed at the opposing leader and told him to back off or he will shoot. the gang kept getting closer and closer to the rider and then the taser misfired he rider said "he was sorry, it was a misfire", that's when things started to really go down.

The fellow rider started to flee to safety and the gang fallowed so the fellow rider pulled out mace and sprayed it at the gang. shortly after the gang started to rush some of our riders and one of the gang members hopped over the rail and pushed one of our female riders off a ledge. every one thought she was stabbed so I grabbed her and pulled her to safety and I checked her, she was alright.

The other riders didn't know she was alright so to defend themselves and others some of the riders took it into their own hands and beat him up, not the guy with the taser. yes he was injured to the point where he couldn't go after us, so they called back up. one of our riders came towards me and told me there calling back up with heaters(Street for gun) and thing are going to get worse if we stick around so we escaped one of the riders was trying to escape when one of the gang members pushed him off his bike and took it, so he ran till he could find a safe place, he took a taxi home.

The fellow rider jumped down a ledge hurting his left ankle as he grabbed his bike and escaped we all rode to the nearest main street regrouping with other bikers to make sure they were safe some riders risked it to go back to get other riders who were stuck, scared and didn't know what to do.

We called LAPD when we got to a safe spot to tell them what happened, they didn't believe what we told them and we told them where it happened at the Venice skate park they replied they didn't know where the skate park was (which is absolute bs when there's a LAPD station a few hundred feet from the park) and took it as a joke so we left Venice and spit to go home...That's the story on what happened that night."

Bump September 23:

"OK…. There is a lot of misinformation going around regarding the incident at the Venice skate park that needs to be set straight.

I was one of the witnesses at the skate park when it all went down. This is how it actually played out… There were some riders left over form the Ride With No Name at the skate park, they were trying to figure out how to get a fellow rider home who’s bike had just been stolen 15 min prior. That is when 5 or 6 guys rolled up to the park really hard, they approached several riders very aggressively shouting “get your shit and get the fuck out or we are going to cut you”. I never heard anything about the guys being angry about someone pissing in the bowl.

One main guy in particular was very aggressive, he went up to a few people with his hand in the pocket of his hoodie, threatening them with a box cutter and using the title “Venice 13”. As he and 2 other guys approached a fellow rider still saying “Venice 13 and the word cut“, the rider pulled out a Tazer and Mace for protection form the advancing threat. The guy with the box cutter continued to get closer while the rider with the Tazer backed up until there was no more room. The Tazer went off by mistake (MISSING THE GUY) that’s when the rider started to apologize for it going off, but it fell on deaf ears.

At that point the guys started to converge on the rider with the Tazer where he sprayed the guy with the box cutter and ran to the other side of the bowl. The guy then hopped the railing with the box cutter in his hand and hit/shoved a girl off the ledge, everyone thought the girl had been stabbed. In response to the girl, 2 different riders tackled the guy with the box cutter and made sure he didn’t get up and hurt anyone else, they were defending there lives…

A few of the other aggressors started fights with other riders while this all was going on, hurting a few innocent people in the process, IE= Broken teeth, cuts, ect… That’s when someone yelled gun, and that there were more people on the way.

When everyone herd that we all split. We got down to the boardwalk where I saw 3 more dudes running towards us. The next thing I know they tackle a rider and try to hit him, he runs off down the street while the 3 guys steal his bike.

That’s how it went,………. it was some bas shit I know,…….. but it wasn’t like it was an unprovoked attack.. I hope this can be resolved with ought further violence towards riders…

Just remember there are always 2 sides of the story, when people gossip about things they weren’t whiteness to, facts get twisted and innocent people get hurt…"

Although I was not there, I've talked to people that were involved in the incident and the statements above are all very similar to spot on to what people have been telling me.

I'm very concerned about this situation because I commute daily to Venice for work. I find it very difficult now, that I have to watch my back now to incident that I was not part of or even not there to begin with.

From what I'm hearing there are targeting anyone who have spoke cards on there rims. To be safe, I suggest everyone to remove there spoke cards for the time being when riding around the Westside.

I hope that everything will be resolved or at least tensions to die down. In the meantime please be careful everyone

what are you talking about, Tyler?

the only reason this is going on is because bicycles aren't mainstream. they're enough of a subculture for the guys to say "alright let's kick everyone's ass who's riding one of those fixie bikes". if the Mayor of Venice was beat up by some dudes who drove off in a Honda Civic, do you think they'd be targetting every Honda Civic driver in the area?

"Im trying to negotiate and get groups together to talk this out . . . "

Big props for that. Shotgun_mike said it in his OP, and any such efforts to reach across divides and come to an understanding should be pursued and applauded.

Any progress to report?

Gang politics ain't my cup of tea, but if there's any opportunity support bringing these two groups to the table to talk things out--I would love to help. Perhaps there's a greater (yet hidden) opportunity to bridge a gap and help the neighborhood and its various communities rise up here. Like I said, gang politics aren't my thing, but as an attorney, I'm a damn good listener--to all sides.

Dude that's every other rider in L.A., so don't get paranoid. I know gang members aren't exactly known for good judgment, but randomly targeting innocent cyclists isn't exactly the best way to avoid police scrutiny, and presumably V13 has other priorities that they'd prefer police not take an interest in.

Maybe Sgt. Krumer can weigh in on this with suggestions and any input on this incident from the law enforcement perspective.

no shit thats when things started to really go down.

Basically, you have 1) people who carry a weapon 2) know who to use the weapon properly and 3) have the you know what to apply the weapon. Rarely do all three exist in the same person.

Society seems to be made up of a combination of 1 & 3 (gangsters and the homie you roll with just in case), and a bunch of 1's.

There is really only a single group of people who exemplify all three in society -- the police. You just wish "properly" always = "justly".

westside rides should avoid Venice for the indefinite future. venice gangs have spoken of targeting rides.

west of lincoln is a problem
west of abbot kinney might be asking for it

individual riders should be ok, but it might also be advisable to pull your spokecards if you ride in venice. the strand might be a place to avoid riding late at night.

options to avoid this situation have been exhausted from contacting and working with lapd to working with gang experts. there is no reason to expect improvement in the situation for the foreseeable future. krumer knows about the situation.

dont assume you know the story. you probably have the facts wrong. what happened is not the point. what could happen is the concern. act with caution and dont be a rumor monger or a fuckhead like ruinedbyidiots. realize that when you spread the rumors your name gets attached to the rumor, which means that people who want to know about the rumor might come looking for you to find out more.

cyclists and skaters have love for one another and somewhere down the line everyone will remember that, but it will take time.

Hello All,

This was brought to my attention and it is currently being handled by Pacific Division Sgt. Reina.

Gang intervention specialists (GIS) have touched based with the parties involved and I am hopeful that cooler heads will prevail.

I was advised today that the "victim" of the alledged assault has cancelled several meetings that the GIS set up.

I will continue to monitor the situation and provide what assistance I can. While this incident happens to affect the cycling community it is being treated as a GANG related incident rather than a cycling incident and thus my ability to directly intervene is limited and I must defer to Pacific Division Gangs and Sgt Reina.

Well, no. Actually the overwhelming majority of society doesn't rank at all on your scale, because most people don't carry any weapon at all. You would have to account for them as 0s on your ranking system. And there are a lot more 1s among the gangsters than they and their self-mythology would have you believe.

Still, in the land of 0s, the 1 is king. That's why so many people are scared, and you have to wonder whether that would still be the case in a society where more people other than the police were 123s.*

well, right, I shouldn't have made it read like those were the only options in society. i was thinking along the line of people who choose to carry a weapon -- and for some thats as far as it goes.

You're right, I dont carry a weapon. Most i know dont.

Gangsters are largely insecure and paranoid, they are pressured to prove themselves more than the average person carrying a weapon. Thus gangster are given the means, without any skill, and pressured into proving/ action.

(enter a plug on why grabbing a lot of the kids attention via bikes is a very good reason to support this culture right now. Give them new avenues and ideas instead of the usual bullshit)

Jesse is the shit, he's done so much for Venice (the effin' skate park). Not everyone knows this, especially the guys involved that night. The riders probably just saw some guy with friends getting threatening in their faces and then all it took was ONE moron to set it all off. I heard that dickweed has been kicked out of all rides.

Not all riders ride fixies. Not all fixie riders are punks. Not all gang members are immature 13-16 year-olds. Even more important, so few people know wtf is going on, I wish Jesse would come out and talk about this shit to clear the air, where is he?

It's too bad the people involved won't be the only ones caught in this mess. Some kid not knowing any of this crap is probably gonna get his ride stolen or the shit kicked out of him just because he looks like a stereotype, or a dude from that night. Weak sauce.

- This is a classic example of why we have to "respect the neighborhoods we ride through" and rest in. Respect engenders respect.

- This is why when drivers on a ride ask me if we are a "bike gang" i emphatically respond "No! This is a love club". The vast majority of us have no idea what a gang really is or what it means to be in one. To front like a bicycle club is a biker gang, even as an ironic gesture, is risky bizzness. REal gang members might not see the distinction.

Big props to the people out there who are working to get this squashed.

I agree with you trickmilla... also, even short stops in others neighborhoods are dangerous and should be avoided... I've been in a couple rides where the ride stops and regroups around while in Boyle Heights (where I live) and I would never-ever stop or walk through some of those area due "hoods" in the area... I've mentioned not stopping cuz its not safe and had people not familiar with the area laugh, give a smart comment, or give me "the look" like I'm crazy and a wuz. In one occasion I had ridazz talk shit because of me telling them not to stop in location & they did anyhow, when the g-sters from that hood came out and waved a gun around they agreed with me and bolted like a bat out of hell... hahahahaha...

TV,

I think JB's point is that you won't really find members congregating at certain public locations as they would during the day (if that). The members to really really worry about don't like leaving their comfort zones. Public places are really outside of their element, so you tend to just get the guys with cooler heads or just trying to have fun with their hyna and the newbies in the public scene (unless you're at a lowrider show in El Monte).

You're really paranoid about this, but it's not really new to Los Angeles in essence. Just be smart and try to educate a smarter behavior, rather than trying to create fear, that's the media and government's job.

I dont think they're really "looking" for you Tortuga. Just relax a bit and let people know to be safe, be smart and don't assume the same degree of safety in certain section as lets say a couple months ago.

Let it blow over, cause this can come back to bite us. You et enough people scared and they resort to all kinds of solutions to ease their minds.

@clearskittles if jesse and his crew threatened people with knives then who is the idiot? someone who acted to defend themselves might have done so hastily but they had the right to self defense because the so called mayor of venice was in their face with a knife. someone ought to explain to jesse how much he stands to lose and how much the skaters stand to lose (skatepark fenced up or closed) if something goes down, or if these allegations of gang involvement and intimidation go public. maybe you should do that.

@shotgunmike if you know people then maybe you can help by communicating to them that there are two or more sides to this story and that ridazz intend to do their best to respect their territory. its not like there are v13 signs around the park. if jesse was as aggressive as people say here then im sure the homies know that he sometimes starts shit. the impression of this anonymous poster is that the anger mostly comes from the idea that jesse was jumped so its important that people know that some people think jesse was the one who started shit.

My guess is that The only thing that will "resolve" this is if all the cyclists involved turn themselves in and let the legal system sort this out. If it truly was a case of self defense then a jury trial will sort it out. It sounds like both sides were being standoffish and assholes and it will come down to who fired the proverbial first shot and who called the cops.

As for group rides going through Venice area, you shit out of luck for a few months until this blows over. There is no way a Negotiated truce would include the right to
make a bunch of noise in peoples neighborhoods moving forward. Maybe you can get the geenlight stopped but you canT keep a gangster from knocking someone out for making noise in his hood. Stick to main streets.

Smart Ridazz don't run. They respect the neighborhoods to begin with and when
shit goes down they back up and make sure everyone gets away safe and They look for ways to de-escalate a situation.

sad to see it was Jesse Martinez who is an icon to millions. I used to watch him rip the real Venice skatepark - the Venice pavillion - when I was a kid. Him, Tim Jackson Fingers Murray Dressen, Natas, Hartsell, they were building scrapwood ramps and shredding shit that was never meant to be skated. The area has a lot of history and there was always gang activity around there. If you were there after dark you did it at your own risk. times changed and all these dudes Are old now but they still own Venice. When they say get out you get the fuck out.

Nah just showing respect for someone who made a lot of shit happen in his life. he's not just some pro skater. he's a veteran that is backed by V13. So I wouldn't call it starfucking Id call it being street smart and showing respect. the consequences of doing otherwise are now clear aren't they? His role is to keep the park, that he spent a lot of time working for, clean and empty of people at night.

One can imagine it's not easy to keep kids out of the park after hours. It's probably a down right pain in the ass. Flash forward to a large group making noise and partying late night at the spot with music bumping it makes the person responsible pissed to have to walk over there and shoo people out. I'm sure he rolled up super aggressive. Perhaps a few stubborn people refused to get the fuck out and escalated the situation. I totally sympathize with him / the skaters on that point. But I'm saying it maybe wasn't the smartest goddamn thing on his part to get a major gang involved in this. They're not known for having cool heads about things.

Anyway, if the issue really is that JM is trying to protect the skatepark from being disrespected, then I think there is hope for a truce. It would have to involve making it very clear to bike riders that the Venice Skatepark is off-limits as a party spot. I'm talking about flyers being handed out at rides, posted at bike shops, etc. It would probably have to involve other things, too, but probably better not to get into that here.

And it IS very predictable if you understand the POV of others. It's pretty simple. Gangsters don't like people chillin in their hood making noise. I've seen cyclists just ignorantly partying their asses off in a hood with no regards or respect for the residents. In fact we just went through this a few months ago when some kid got batted over the head. This Incident is aNother reminder to all acting a fool to be aware of how other people are affected by your choice of party stops.

What could happen is the concern. True. But you'd be stupid not to look back on a situation and analyze what did happen and learn from it so there is less risk of it happening again in the future.

Hello All,

I just received an update form Pacific Division and here is the latest.

We have not heard anything from the individuals who frequent the skate park, or who are familiar with the situation, that would lead us to believe that there has been, or may be, any type of retaliation by Venice 13. Since the arrest of the "suspect" who alledgedly assaulted the "victim" it has been quiet.

While there is always the possibility that an independant operator from Venice 13 may act out on his own, every indication is tha Venice 13, as an organization, does not intend to take any retaliatory action.

As I get additional info I will post it.

You recently became a citizen of this country yeah? In doing so, you perhaps unwittingly joined the world's most brazen and monied gang in history, lead by the mafiosos in Washington who on the daily are getting territorial with the world on some multi trillion dollar mission to conquer broke people "From the Halls of Montezuma..To the shores of Tripoli."

Yeah, yeah, we get it. As Woody Guthrie said, some will rob you with a six-gun and some with a fountain pen...but that doesn't change the fact that the guy who robs you with a six-gun is a fucking asshole.

Take into account - Mr. Fountain Pen is probably getting alot more return for his risk...benefits of education/intelligence. My neighborhood in Venice could use some more of that, on all sides.

So could every neighborhood.

Would you rather be robbed of your bike with a gun pressed into your neck or receive a $200 overdraft fee at BoA. I know which I would choose but, maybe I'm just a wimp.

like you had no responsibility in getting the overdraft fee? Comparing violent crime to something you had control to stop is kinda wimpy.

you are validating unscrupulous banking practices tantamount to loan sharking: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/08/16/overdraft-protection-expi_n_682825.html

Nope. Fee Amounts by any agency can be turned into an APY and make it look like loan sharking.

Ticketmaster fees APY?
parking fees APY?
Red Light ticket fees APY?

Overdraft fees are easy to avoid. Some others aren't. Bottom line it is a free market and you can choose which business you do banking with and what fees you are willing to bear.

"However, Wells Fargo intends to appeal and several other banks have indicated that they will not change their policy of processing the day's largest transactions first (as opposed to chronological order), which increases the likelihood of multiple small transactions incurring overdraft fees."

banks found that if they process the day's transactions by size rather than chronological order (chronological seemingly the most logical to customers) it could increase it's overdraft charge incident rate. Talk about sheisty bankers.

I fell prey to this and I was quite raged by it and the response by my bank.

I worked for Bank Of America many years ago. At the time ,we would post credits then debits. In other words we would credit your acount with the deposit then run your checks. They would also post the debits by the dollar amounts. Smallest check 1st. Then came deregualtion, The bank can run the checks before they post the deposits made on the same day. They also now run your larger checks first. This leads to more nsf fees then under the older system . Back in the 80s the state sue and won a class action case against BofA for overcharges on the nsf fees.

Fuck that. People will always make mistakes or the bank will make one for them. It's been awhile but my bank made one for me, how convenient for them. Overdraft fees will always be greater than $0.00. Which means, because of current lack of competition in the banking industry, that overdraft fees these days will be way overpriced unless regulated by the government.

The more I read your posts the more I realize that you're lucky you've never been treated like shit by a major corporation, the cops, or probably even the bullies in your middle school.

I saw those goons when we were rolling up to the skatepark. they were sitting on benches in front of the pizza shop on the boardwalk. they had shaved heads and baggy clothes talking shit as everybody rode by, pretending like they were going to tackle some of the riders. after about an hour the ride had dwindled to about 30 or 40 riders listening to techno, eating grilled chees and dancing around drunk (with absolutely no rhythm). Unfortunatley I was one of those that dwindled away. The average weight of everbody left on the ride was about 130lbs and the average weight of each one of these drunk gangsters was about 250lbs. I know who Jesse Martinez is and if he got beaten up by a bunch of drunk skinny emo kids then I can understand the “Mayor of Venice” may have something to be embarrased about. The fact is he is not the mayor of anything, and these cowards are gangbangers and by default they will follow anything as long as they are not the ones getting bullied.
