LACM - LAPD Enforcement

Thread started by
Sgt. David Krumer at 09.24.10 - 4:27 pm
Hello Everyone,
While there is already a thread that addresses LAPD's posture for tonight's Los Angeles Critical Mass, I just wanted to reiterate.
#1. Please stay on the right side of the double yellow lines and out of opposing lanes of traffic. This is the number one cause of injury to cyclists and among the most dangerous activities you can engage in while on a bike.
#2. No corking! Corking will be done at LAPD's discretion depending on the circumstances. You are encouraged to stop at all red lights that are not corked.
While these two rules are our primary focus tonight, please keep in mind that any violation of the vehicle code is citable. There will be an effort to ensure that the enforcement of the vehicle code is balanced, measured, fair, and appropriate.
All citations will be written based upon personal observation and based upon individual action on the part of the violator, rather than on "collective punishment" issues that have been previously discussed.

THIS IS STUPID! you split the group and cause wrecks deep in the pack when you suddenly stop at a light then roll at the next light...MAKE UP YOUR MIND ABOUT WHAT YOU'RE GONNA DO! or get out of the way and leave it to the REAL ridazz

LACM RIDAZZ
CORK AT EVERY SINGLE LIGHT!!

Stops don't have to be sudden. There are yellow lights before the reds, you might not have known this. Don't you know what to do on a yellow? Slow and prepare to stop safely. If you don't know how to ride safely and read traffic control signage and devices maybe you're not ready to ride on the street.

yeah tell that to the hundreds of idiots riding with no brakes and no knowledge of riding in a group...when they cant stop they take out other ridazz.
if they wanna stop at every light fine...if they wanna cork that's fine too...but to do it at the lapd's discretion is retarded and inconsistent.

Hey peeps got an Idea here.
If we are gonna be stopping at red lights then we are gonna need some riders to stay behind when the forward group does a turn to point out where the group went,Just to make sure we don't all get separated.

Getting separated is a valid concern many riders have, but I don't think on a ride of 2000+/- people that a red light will leave those that stop wondering where the large chunk of riders in front them are going. If the road is straight, obviously, you'll see them up ahead; if they turn, I have a feeling someone will be able to see where the group ahead turns.

What's the point of having a Police escort if your not going to use them All i saw was a cops arriving at Yellows and stopping instead of setting up for them to cork in that case they can go home and we stop at yellows anyways???
We ride from Long Beach to South Gate and Back we have to stop because our group has not made it big yet (40 at best) but when you have 50 something cops on bikes and motorbikes it's freaken ridicules that the ride was broken up into about 4 groups and still was at a crawl. Wolf pack send me a meet point we will meet up and smash. I don't want to go 100miles per hour all the time but at the pace it went I will never ride again "F" the POPO... It's all a set up to get paid kids just want to ride we didn't have issuesbefore but now we do. Funny thing is why won't they let us ride west of Western??? No more Beverly Hills or Rodeo dr.??? The big wigs have spoken and they don't want us on thier side of the street send all these hudlums to the hoods!!!
We use to ride anywhere we wanted now all they do is head south and then east keep the crowd in the hood!!!!
If i'm wrong tell me!!
Why is LAPD running the routes??
Happy Cogs don't stop!!!

corking arguments aside, if you can't stay to the right of the double yellow lines and do get a ticket you deserve it dumbass[es].
I'll admit I'm not too much a fan of cops either but Krumer I like your style...

You know what?...
I hate to say this, but I'm actually going to give up trying to convince people to follow the rules even though that is the only solution to continue LACM from remaining successful. It's just a never-ending defeat.
There are too many stubborn heads who don't want to see the light of riding your bicycle according to vehicle code. The number of ignorant riders that want to continue to argue this fact will never end to cease. LACM is going to be a constant struggle for us all if we want to keep it alive. The LAPD and the powers that see cycling as a hindrance to traffic will continue to oppress Critical Mass until it gets snuffed.
My lack of willingness to participate in the struggle for LACM to survive is just one of many people who may have the influence to make things better for this event. Perhaps many of you may have the drive to make it actually work, but I have let go of trying.
CicLAvia opened my eyes to realizing that there are better ways to work within the system in order to transform it from within. My focus is now to put my energy into ways to get the city to make streets more welcoming and safe for more people to ride their bikes in the city on a regular basis. Critical Mass was once an ideal for me to use in order to bring awareness.
I'm not saying that permitted closed streets rides are the answer, but there's a method to convincing the larger public to change the way they think about bikes than the way we have been going about it. These methods towards faster, more influential changes are what I now find important.
Don't get me wrong. I still support Critical Mass and hope it survives. However, I think I see that it is like trying to get out of a pit of sand - Every step we take we end up going back a few steps. I may even continue to participate in LACM, but my fear as that it is going to degenerate faster than we can make it improve. I hope I'm totally wrong about this, but I really don't think so. Sorry to disappoint you all.
Continue on if you have the means and will to make LACM stay strong and improve.
PROVE ME WRONG.
People like Aktive_420 have that drive and positive energy to make LACM actually a success again. We need more of that inspiration from a lot more of you. The naysayers, haters, an narrow minded people will do anything to close down our last essential key to this event's survival - Communication.
Make it so that Critical Mass becomes a powerful force towards bringing awareness of bicycles having the right to ride in traffic as traffic. I, personally, am going to now concentrate on more tangible and constructive methods towards a better city for bicycles . com
My final words for the betterment of Critical Mass are the following:
1 - COMMUNICATION ("xerocracy", meeting of the minds, adaptive)
2 - RESPECT (courtesy, kindness, awareness of others)
3 - SAFETY (observation of common rules, doing whats in best interest of the group)

Both of these need to be spread to the LAPD on bikes .... part of the reason I have slowly lost intrest in riding LACM the last 2 months is a kinda combination of both ....

I think we need to turn the corner with LACM so how.
You always set a great example with your positivity.
The bottom line for me is that the people on LACM are representative of our culture in LA
99% of the people in cars would act exactly the same way if they were out there with us.
To a certain extent this is something we will never be able to "fix"
LAPD is struggling to find an approach where they can look good and keep their less sophisticated officers in check.
I think they think that if they ignore us, it will only be a matter of time b4 one of their officers acts out again and their whole PR debacle is back in motion.
It appears now that the first couple of LACMs with the cops were a fluke and things with them are going to get more hectic in months to come.
I predict that this next mass will be a bit smaller than the last one.
I think it is a shame to waste that energy of all those kids coming out, many of them for their first big ride ever.
I'd like to see us retain all that interest and actually expand critical mass and make it bigger, more spread out, harder to control, and more organic.
It is impossible for the police to jock us at every intersection.
I'm a stupidly optimistic person, but I know it is impossible to have 2000+ people many of them, young men, and have everybody acting polite and considerate.
I think it would be much more fun and productive to have 5-10 rides of 100-300 people crisscrossing the city, smaller groups are more accountable to each other, and people act more like individuals than a mob.
Not to be a flat tire ... but I'm afraid there is only so much we can do to get everybody to act considerate, especially when the media has advertised for almost 20 years that CM is all about saying fuck you to drivers and the government, which actually encourages people to approach CM with a pre-determined notion that that is what it is about.
