Long story short I completely destroyed my bike tonight (both deraileurs, chain rings, rear rim and spokes, rear hub questionable, rear wheel mounting questionable). Can't possibly repair all that on my budget, so I'm shopping for a used bike.

I used to shop Craigslist but everything there feels like a scam or stolen bike. Rather try on here.

I don't need anything fancy, just reliable and preferably light-ish, so fixies are ok, would rather have a roadie but my budget caps at $250. I'm also 6'4 and long in the legs so I kinda need a bigger frame, 61cm is pushing it as it is. But beggars can't be choosers, I'll look at anything. Just want something to commute and keep up on the medium / quicker rides (cruisers, BMX, etc are not much help to me).

hi, i don't really have many ideas for you, other than trying some pawn shops maybe, since you don't like craigslist too much (there are tons of scammers there, gotta' watch it on cl)

i'm sorry your bike got obliterated, that sounds really bad

this has made me very curious though, if you wouldn't mind me asking, what happened to your bike, i just can't imagine how one would manage to destroy so many parts at the same time?!

Bump, sorry bout your bike!

Do a search (the button between post new & refresh), and put in sale in the search in body box. You'll get a bunch of hits, though some may be out dated...

Or just keep bumping this thread up and wait...

Try the Bicycle Kitchen. Maybe they'll have another tall frame like the one I got there, you'll also be able to build up your bike there.

I'm not sure how it happened, but it went down like this:

I was cranking away from a red light when my pedals seized and the bike locked up as if my rear brakes were on, but they weren't, and there was an awful sound. I grabbed my bike by hand and ran over to the side walk to inspect. What I found was my rear deraileur, stretched out straight and twisted at the middle, broken off the deraileur hanger and jammed into my rear spokes. So the deraileur is toast and the rear wheel is bad enough that I'm not sure I even want to try truing it. And at the time it happened I was standing on the pedals really hard to get away from the light because I was making a left from the middle lane up a hill. All the stress I guess ripped the chain off the chain ring, because the front chain ring is tweaked and the front deraileur got bent when the chain tore off. I don't really trust the chain now either because of how twisted up it was by the time my weight was off it.

So the parts count would be two deraileurs, a chain, and a rear wheel, unless I want to try to deal with parts that are slammed back into place with a hammer and a welder, which isn't really my style.
