I use music as a means by which to cultivate an image for myself without actually developing my sense of identity. It’s perfect for a shallow and image obsessed youth like me, desperate to establish myself in the world as an eclectic and unique individual with discerning and original taste.
I get a smug brand of satisfaction from listening to music others do not know about. I feel better than them, and I enjoy feeling better than them due to my quiet and introspective nature thwarting my desires to assert myself in general life situations. From behind my sneering elitist veneer I can assert myself with confidence.
I surround myself with others of a similarly elitist ilk so we can all congratulate each other on our superior taste. In actuality, we need each other for reassurance that the images we are projecting of ourselves are adequately unique and tasteful.
Ultimately, my pretentious feelings of superiority and general cynicism towards others who hold different tastes to mine are born out of deep insecurities concerning my own identity. Not that it matters, as long as my image is kept hip and fashionable.
Music is a fashion accessory I wear to help upkeep the façade that is myself.
I am a hipster.
