Damn! my favorite restaurant in the world is closing.... Mako has been in the Los Feliz neighborhood for 26 years. Damn I love that place. Anybody know about this spot and love it? Want to have a luncheon there on Friday?

I will miss the Ah-So-Special :-(

my son and i frequented the spot a few times a week after I picked him up from school, during my college years. last time I ate there was when we swung by your spot... that sucks to hear they're leaving.
Let's buy a bunch of 40oz's, order some veggie yakisoba and send them off in style.

What? When is it closing? Why?
Damn. That was my introduction to Japanese food. Haven't been to that spot in nearly 8 years.
Has it happened yet?
Mondo, Onyx, Mako... Wow.

Let's plan for 12, I will check to see what time KG (the owner) will be there just to make sure. That guy is one humble legendary cat.

i used to get my chicken skinless.
i used to dip my tempura in the chicken goo. or pour the goo on the rice!
yum.
i met cole for the first time at mako. there was a race starting from xlarge, if memory serves me right, they may have been free drinks?

Could their rent be going way up? Mondo Video a Go Go and Mondorama were 2 casualties of rent increases years ago..

I'm sure it is now. But I don't think they were forced out. KG is retiring. Dude has been there running the show for 26 years. I feel like it needs to be documented somehow.

yeah Mondo was on Melrose for a short while but they didn't last there for too long. Not too many places give me a weird vibe and make me second guess myself for walking in - there was always an adventure waiting at Mondo..
Oh shit! I never knew the name of this (Mako) place but have been there tons. I really like their tempura!
Maybe I will ride over after work but not gonna make it during lunch.
When are they officially closing?

Mondo Video was the video rental spot next to Pizza Pauls
They had a great selection of videos, but they really pushed the envelope. They would play porn on the TV's and tease each other that so and so's mom was doing well in this video, etc. They also filmed porn there, and my buddy told me I guess they had their White Power send off party when they got evicted. From what I've heard they really pissed people off with their antics.
But they had this really great sale before they closed.
I never knew they were into the whole white power stuff until after it shut down, but they had probably one of the coolest video rental spots ever.

mondo video was awesome....the north side of the store was a sorta weird shop of vintage stuff for sale and the south side (connected) was the video side. they had EVERY b movie ever made practicly...I first rented BLACK DEVIL DOLL FROM HELL there...russ meyer stuff was tame compared to what they rented. it was run by 2 brothers and they had parties with russ meyer star kitten natividad there a bunch. my friend fucked her i think once.....anyhow, i first heard g.g. allin banned in boston there at the vintage side...they sold old bootleg cassettes there.

I think the white power shit was just for the sake of "pushing the envelope" of free expression and annoying people's delicate sensibilities.
I think they named their dog after hitler's dog or girlfriend or some bullshit.
I never took it seriously for whatever reason. I think they were just into shocking people.
Mondo had an amazing selection of fucked up videos,
their porn was organized in categories like: Fatty's, Midgets, Amputee's, etc.
They had a "Chicken Hawk" section that had a NAMBLA documentary, Kindergarden Cop (staring our current governor), and a doc. on Allen Ginsberg.
The had the worlds largest collection of GG Allin videos, with all the "official" titles, bootlegs, plus several that they themselves had shot (which is no small feat since GG was famous for attacking people with cameras during his show).
You could get copies of videos that were band for copyright reasons like "Cocksucker Blues" (Robert Frank's too brutally honest portrayal of the Rolling Stones) and Super Star a re-dub of the Carpenter's Story acted out by Barbie Dolls. and lots of stuff that was simply unavailable (or unwanted) in any other part of LA.
====
Mondo and Archiac idiot were just 2 of special little indy shops that faded away from los feliz.
Also missed:
- Onyx cafe (was open till 4am)
- George's Diner (now Fred 62)
- George's Gallery (named after the diner)
- Fat Beats! (where DJ legends like Numark, Babu, Rhetmatic, & CLos would be juggling beats and scratching their asses off till it was time to ring up your order)
- Vinyl Fetish (DJ Jun worked there for ages)
- Sarno Bakery
- Amok Bookstore
- and Eastside Records on Hillhurst
with Mako closing it definitely marks the end of an era!

Those guys were from San Pedro (the original store was on Channel and Gaffey in the late 80s) and I went to high school with Bruce. He was way, way, WAY weirder than any of the crowd of weirdos I hung out with. He weirded a lot of us out. A friend of mine told me that he (Bruce) passed away recently.

I hung out at Mondo *a lot* and knew those people pretty well. Am still in touch with a good amount of the folks that worked there.
Yeah, the dog was actually named Hitler. Sweet dog, though. Part husky & part wolf, I think, actually. And yes, they dealt primarily in shock value and exploitation. However, the owner, Colonel Rob, did have a genuine history with real people back in the day, like Russ Meyer & Titus Moody. At any rate, Mondo Video was an LA landmark. It changed quite a bit when it moved from Vermont to Melrose, so that is something to remember. It got, well, crazier.
Yeah, they shot porn (and lots of it) there. Most of the things that you think happened, MOST LIKELY did. Were they bad people? Nah, not even. Crazy? HELL MOTHER FUCKING YES. I saw and participated in shit in that store that...just...WOW. Ask me about it sometime in person.
I actually bought out a good portion of the rare VHS section when they were going out of business. So did a few other folks I know. So, in effect, the Mondo Archive still *sorta* lives on with the folks that used to party there.
I have quite a few pix from the last Halloween/goodbye party that took place there that had Don Bowles playing and just madness x 1,000,000.
I also SERIOUSLY miss the Onyx. A Lot. So much time spent there... :(
Eastside Records, Vinyl Fetish... <3
UGH. Again...so many of my favorite places...gone.

Ever hit that greek spot on the other side of the los feliz 3.
It doesn't look like much, and its no Mako but I like the food.
Try the veggie Gyros, lentil soup, & hummus.
