I don't know what your budget is on rims but I have a guy at a local shop with Zipp carbon rims, 28 bladed spokes on dura ace hubs with a 9 speed cassette or whatever you call them...chain rings? anyhow, he wants $350 for the set. email me and i'll send you a pic of them and tell you where to get them...you get first dibs...

That's a sweet deal.
Makes me wonder though if carbon rims are the best rims to be riding/commuting/locking up around the city?

as a non-racer on a budget, i love my second pair of aksiums because they are still bulletproof.

zipp carbon bladed? probably crashed/repaired/then rebuilt.
you're going to need tubular tires. (40-100)
and you're going to need sealant to repair those tubular tires. (12 bucks for 2 uses)
and then you're going to need swisstop carbon brake pads. (50 for 4)
but it could always be a clincher/alum brake surface zipp from way back.
and yeah locking up carbon wheels might be questionable but commuting on them is up to you, should you choose to take on the potential maintenance cost. But it helps when you flat out 7 miles from home and you can ride home on a flat tubular. clincher tubes usually tear and stick out of the tire after about half a mile...

i'm looking for a rear wheel for a 9speed cassette hub and my budget is less than $170. i keep looking at the rims as a place to start since that seems to be issue in terms of choice.

I just bought a rear Aksium to replace a taco wheel. The hub is overtightened and the wheel doesn't spin freely. I am not the biggest fan of repairing factory-new equipment.
Other than that, I've found it to be a decent wheel. Not too heavy and I have already hit some gnarly potholes and it survived unscathed. Plus I like the bladed spokes and lowish spoke count just for style (wheels are not really the reason I'm slow ;p ).
