Stoner Skate Park Group

Just to inform everyone I am in charge of Skate Plaza/Park/Spot Development for the city of los angeles department of recreation and parks. I am also going to be incharge of getting our bike spot program going and would like to enlict your help.
In regards to stoner skate we are in the throws of getting the plaza open and would appreciate your help by not riding the park after hours and during the hours that it is to be open: sunrise to sunset. The park was not design for bikes and unfortunately our muncipal code does allow us to mix the two (biking and skating).
With that said I also apologize for not having developed space for you guys but I am seeking this opportunity to rectify my neglecty of your passion and would like to set something up to get the process rolling for developing a space strictly for you and your passion.
Please feel free to contact me at:

Yeah we really do not as the space wasn't design for it. It was design for skaters by skaters. Though with that said we want to bikers there space, a space designed by them and specifically for them ie, no skaters or bocceball.
I am wanting to set up a charette to where we can begin to put todgether a development strategy for bike plazas/spots in our park system.
Our current muncipal codes do not allow us for to have bikers and skaters to co-use a space.
Like I said I am open for discussion and am available per contact info given on the first post.

I think it's really unfortunate that bicycles weren't considered when this park was designed. From skateboarding though I know that bikes can be really hard on a skatepark. How about a Stoner Velodrome? I see that there's one for sale right now.

I had to look it up:
4. The Board shall cause signs to be posted at all skateboard facilities providing reasonable notice that any person riding a skateboard at the facility must wear a helmet, elbow pads and knee pads while skateboarding; that no bicycles or scooters are allowed in the skating area; that the park hours are 12:00 noon to sunset Monday through Friday and 9:00 a.m. to sunset on Saturday, Sunday and holidays; that the park will be closed during periods of wet weather or when conditions make it unsafe to skate; and, that any person in violation of this ordinance will be subject to citation for violation thereof.

Municipal code fail.
The good news is that Craig is sincere about reaching out and developing bike-specific areas. As a polo player, this is very exciting.

What exactly is a bike plaza or bike spot? Would this just be for BMXers and the such?

The rink where we currently play polo is shared by Roller Hocky Players, Bike Polo Playeres, skaters, basketball Players and small children who just like to run around. We all share the park equally and confrontations over its use are very rare.
Why does the city have to create arbitrary rules for the use of its parks?
What damage can rubber tires do to a skatepark?
P.S.

Bikearch,
Many will perceive bias and selective enforcement of the rules on your part. There were skaters using the park after-hours (against the rules) and without a helmet or safety gear on (also against the rules) but, to my knowledge, they were not targeted for police action like the cyclists were. What is your response?

The amount of typos and grammatical errors in Craig's posts don't inspire a lot of confidence that he will get anything done for our community.

i agree, no bikes in skate parks.
BMX bikes wreak havoc on boxes and rails. theyre just too rough. pegs slamming into concrete, taking out huge chunks. its ruining it for everyone.
and trying to skate with some kid on a fixed gear zooming around not being able to stop if something were to happen.
fuuuuuuuck that.

It's the the BMX people grinding with metal pegs that the skaters don't like. It really messes up the concrete.

rubber tires are not the problem,
kids slamming on the fun boxes and rails with pegs, pedals, and cranks chip and dent everything.
skateparks are designed for SKATEBOARDS. theyre not built to withstand teh abuse bikes put out.
also, you ever try skating a park with kids on trials bikes zooming around. its fucking way dangerous. now switch that with some kinda on a fixed gear bike without brakes trying to huck himself over something.
it just doesnt work.

you got me thinking about the beach bike lane its always too packed with pedestrians ,Rollerbladers, skaters grandmas granpas and it clearly has signs and pictures of bikes and people taking sand on the lanes imagine going 40mph and turning on that sharp turn f&%$ that

yeah so what?
i don't skate on those bike lanes. i actually don't even ride my bike on those lanes bc theres too much sand and people going too slow on their cruisers.
whats ur point?
are skateboarders taking chunks of concrete out of the bike path? are they damaging it? are they ruining the path for everyone else?
are we in your way? are you really trying to go 24 mph on ur fixed gear bike on a sandy bike path?

i think a bike lane is bit different than a skatepark.
skateparks are centralized locations, like a gathering spot. a bike path, is well, a path.
and cops are not easy on the fines with public skateparks.
a few of my buddies ride bmx and they got fined HARD for being at the huntington beach skatepark.
i think it was close to like 400 or something. its a bit excessive but hey, it works.

why would a fixed gear wanna do riding in a skatepark tho? ?? the city should just fix the pot holes for us and that's it. that skatepark sounds cool tho just skaters they fall don't get run over with a chain u know what I mean so it should b just skateboarding. they should make that bike lane at Santa monica just for bikes tho people walk on it and they look at us funny like don't ride here

yeah idk.
i'm sure you've seen those kids riding track bikes in a skatepark, trying to air out of hips and shit. it's like watching a dude on a unicycle trying to get extreme or something. i dont understand it either.
i think this whole thing though is to keep bike out of skateparks. as far as upkeep on bikelanes and what not, thats a whole new different fight.

First, you have to see or goto the new skatepark at Stoner Park, it's kinda more like a bicycle park than a traditional skatepark, long open spaces, gap jumps, and a few geometric shaped banks and turns.
As for taking the damage caused by riding a bicycle in this park, I really think it would be minimal (the same wear and tear that skaters grinding trucks would cause) and the spots that are vulnerable should be re-enforced with steel coping so that the park could be open to wider variety of sports.
I think "ONLY" is not the greatest word to use when applying to city funded anything.

if its a flowy park with not a lot of blocks and rails, then fine.
those kinda parks that are bike friendly usually have a bike only night.
pedlow park used to have a bikes only night on tuesdays and thursdays but they stopped it bc the bikes were destroying the blocks and ledges.
and trust me, bmx bikes with steel pegs slamming into coping and concrete, it just doesnt last. skate trucks are made of aluminum. it's too soft and weak to damage anything.
ask any skateboarder. we've all had our spots ruined by bmx bikes.

I think some of you are just missing the point.
--> Apparently there is a (stupid) code on the books that prohibits bikes. It's not a personal thing, and bikes can do some level of damage.
-->Oh, and then there's this: "I also apologize for not having developed space for you guys but I am seeking this opportunity to rectify my neglecty of your passion and would like to set something up to get the process rolling for developing a space strictly for you and your passion."
I will be meeting with Craig next week to discuss this possibility. He has been very receptive thus far. I'm stoked; you guys can keep whining if you want. If you would like me to communicate anything about desired bike space to him, please post it here. Retarded and hostile comments will be fully ignored.

It totally sucks, seeing as this park is practically in my front yard and we can't use it for shit. Meh, they follow the code and wear helmets and pads and I'll think of not using it when I feel like it =P (PS. my road bike doesn't care about your park and for all I care, level it and make more soccer fields! =)

Ok, i guess.... but do you really have moments where you feel like thinking about NOT using the park?
