Thread Box:
alt. Chrome bag?
Thread started by aksendz at 09.27.09 - 5:36 pm

anyone know any other bag companies that use the chest strap system?
my anti conformism dislikes how popular chrome has become
plus they only come in the colors now.

you know, despite the trendiness of the chrome bag, it is actually a very good bag. I received mine as a gift and while the trend kind of bums me out, I still really like the bag and use it all the time. I also don't know what you mean by "they only come in the colors now"....I checked the chrome site they got the black on black and stuff...

buy the chrome if you want the chrome. make it your own. for example, I anti-trended mine by adorning it with a "one less fixie" sticker.

Yeah, way to stick it to the man. Nothing trendy at all about a Chrome bag with "bike culture in-joke" stickers on it.

I made my Chrome bag my own by grinding a couple holes in the cordura when I crashed my bike.

That is so Tren Way.

Oh, but actually, I have a semi-serious question. You know those plastic buckle things that you use to fasten the straps and close the bag and stuff? Does anyone know where to get a replacement for one of those? I broke the tines off the one for my stabilizer strap (the thing that goes under your armpit), so now I have to use this unreliable method of stabilizing my bag, so the strap will come undone occasionally at inconvenient moments, like in traffic with 25lb of groceries and such...

I know I could just spend 20 minutes doing some research to figure this out for myself, but I was wondering whether anybody else has encountered this problem before and could recommend an easy way to replace one of those plastic buckles. Suggestions?

That is a brilliant suggestion! I just emailed them with the following message:

"I broke the tines on the "male" plastic buckle part that fastens the under-arm stabilizer strap on my Chrome messenger bag (a Metropolis, if I am remembering correctly). The part number, as printed on the buckle, is National Molding SS-1CG. Where can I get a replacement for this part?

Thank you,

-NS"

And thank you, PC. Shall I CC the Midnight Ridazz Bicycle Forum on further correspondence?

that citizen messenger bag in red/orange is totally in the price range i'm looking at. i'm down to drop a bit over a bill on a bag, but not two. if only i could find some sort of used or vintage messenger bags, that'd be awesome. i'm gonna compare it to the other bags in that price range that have interested me and see which is better. ima nerd.

I got my big Chrome Metropolis bag at Performance for $60. I asked the sales guy the price, and he screwed up and took a 30% discount off of the already 30%-discounted price. So... you can get lucky that way.

You should check Open Road on Sierra Madre in Pasadena. I found a bunch of Chrome and Timbuk2 shoulder bags for a decent price there but I was looking for backpacks instead. I think I saw a Chrome Citizen bag for $60. It was yellow and pink – fucking awesome.

I bought my Chrome Sultan from Chrome's backdoor sale for really cheap. I also really dislike how Chrome has become the "essential portage accessory" for the fixie trend, but I will always swear by their products. I also had a Citizen bag. I was sold on the comfortable straps. If all else fails, just use a seam ripper to remove the logo.
