Thread Box:
CAMERA BAGS / HIP BAGS?
Thread started by jonnyboy at 05.17.09 - 5:52 pm

Anyone know of a good bag just big enough to carry a DSLR?

I am kind of interested in the idea of lightening my load as much as possible over the summer as the weather gets warmer in an effort to FIGHT THE CRUST.

I guess what I'm really asking is what kind of hip bags do you people recommend that would be big enough to carry a DSLR w/ small prime lens attached and a few small bike tools?

I'm not really tied to the idea of a hip bag, but definitely tied to the idea of compactness & comfort.

reply

Army surpluss has some hip bags, most are waterproof

I found this Crumpler bag that looks pretty good, not sure how it would be on a bike though:

I haven't found the perfect solution yet. I have one of those Crumpler bags and I really like it, I put my camera in it, but I keep it inside my Chrome bag; just don't like the idea of my SLR being vulnerable, but it does take longer to get out and put away.

You probably could wear the Crumpler bag by itself, depending on how much flopping around you can tolerate. Or attach an additional strap to it, like a Chrome bag?

Yeah I was thinking of something like that, just sow a simple safety strap w/ clip to prevent side to side movement.

That's awesome that you have the Crumpler though (I was hoping someone did so I could get some opinions on it related to biking). Which version do you have? The 3 million dollar home or something else? Also which DSLR is it and how snug?

I still want to have room for CO2 pump, extra tube, allen tool & some other small bike tools, rubix cube, etc.

I have one and I love it. I sprayed mine with some Nikwax to make it more waterproof, but it holds up really well in the rain as is. It comes with a waist strap and shoulder strap. It can fit an SLR with a non-telephoto lens on it and no flash attached. it has enough space in the bag for an additional non-telephoto lens or a flash and maybe something else. my lenses are pretty fat so i can't fit a 2nd extra lens in there. I put my battery charger and other small accessories on the other side.

Not the coolest looking thing in the world, but it fits an SLR and a flash, as well as a couple small tools:

there's a company called m-rock that makes a couple of interesting bags that might adapt to cycling in several ways. there's a few v-shaped SLR bags that would hold the camera and then you could put tubes/tire levers in the smaller pockets. link to medium sized one here

it has an attachment system (pic here) that you could put a belt through, or you could use straps to wear it like a backpack, or possibly use 1 strap diagonally to wear it like a messenger back. i think it comes with the straps too.

just don't fall. it definitely doesn't have enough protection to survive that. as for me, i've been thinking about a rack or pannier mounted pelican case. the extra weight is worth the protection, and you can get the kind that has a removable soft case so you can just pull that out and walk around with it.

Read up a bit at KenRockwell.com. He's a self-important jackass photo snob but half the time he really knows what he's talking about. He's a big fan of camera hip-bags. He says people who wear backpacks are newbies. I say he's a douche, but he's pertinent to your question. I think he's got a couple he likes.

I have the 3 million and a 5 million. The 3 is what I use most of the time - it holds my Canon XTi (with lens), plus sometimes an extra lens. The 5 will hold the camera & lens plus two additional lenses and a few small accessories. Not exactly cheap, but they are well made & designed bags, in my opinion. I know that they carry them at Freestyle Photo on Sunset (near Normandie).

I was hoping to be able to check out the 3 million :)

Out of all the ones mentioned in this thread (HUGE THANKS!) I really like the way that the crumpler doesn't necessarily look like a camera bag. I'm gonna have to go to Freestyle Photo and check em out.

Just a small correction to what I said earlier: the smaller of my two Crumpler bags is the Four Million Dollar Home. The Three might be a squeeze for an average DSLR.

i just got the lowepro fastpack 100 for the ALC. it's a really small backpack with a storage case built in at the bottom. it fits my rebel with a 17-85mm lens + a spot for another lens. it also comes with additional dividers too. the top compartment has enough space for a mini u-lock and cord, wallet etc and maybe a flask or sparks. the bag itself is pretty small. most bags are really big on me since i'm small lady and this one fits really well. So I imagine on a normal sized man it's a tiny/small bag.

the cons of it are you can't whip out your camera whenever you'd like to (well on a bike). but as someone who breaks everything i love it's probably not a bad thing to keep it safely in the bag. plus you could just hold it until you come to a stop. let me know if you find a badass hip bag!

It's working out fine thusfar. At first i got the x6 but it was to small, the x7 is perfect, it holds your bike necessities and a couple of Lenses. also packs a Nice bottom strap for riding.

Dude I know what you mean about it looking like a camera bag, I wanna stay away from that too kinda.

I picked up the Crumpler 3 million dollar bag from REI yesterday. It does fit my camera but it is too small and moreover it looks kind of fem, like a purse or something. I am taking it back.

If my camera fits into one of the large transient hip bags, I might just do that- LA Brakeless stocks them and they are on my way home from work. The only thing that worries me about the Transient bags is the lack of any clipping mechanism on the flap = I guess I could sow a clip on there myself. They look cool and they are also locally made!

I am still looking for a good place around town to find one of those Molle Deployment Bags from some kind of Army Surplus store- but the closest one I have found is in Van Nuys and I can't even get through to them on the phone (I either get internet dialup BS or I hear them pick the phone up and hang it up!!).

Anyone know where there's an Army Surplus store around town?

a plastic bag will not protect an expensive dslr. im going to go out on a limb and say that youve never owned one, so why are you even giving "advice" in this thread?

for the op, i got a camera bag off ebay for $15 that had belt loops in it. i wore it on my belt once and the weight of the camera almost tore the loops off. so now i do what rollers does and puts the camera bag in my chrome. but i hardly ever take it on rides these days anyway.
nathan from lafixed has one of those under the weather hip bags (not sure of the size) that fits his dslr. he has a d40x, and the body is way smaller than my canon.

Here is my new bag! I did it over the course of the week while learning how to sew & work with fabric (THANK YOU NICKI & FRANZ!)... I've been having a blast!

Anyway it's a hip bag- I used waterproof vinyl from recycled vinyl for the outside (similar to Freitag) and Cordura for the inner lining. The front flap doubles as a zip pouch that's accessible from the side even when the bag is closed. Right now I have all my bike tools (CO2 pump + 1 cartridge, multitool, chainring tool, tire levers) in the zip pouch for quick access. In the main pouch is my camera and a spare tube.

The thing itself could probably house 2-3 tallboys in the main part of the bag, but it sits well on my waist and I can barely tell I'm carrying something even with my DSLR in there. Also the straps on the rear are spaced properly to fit a mini U-lock :)

When I designed this bag I kept telling myself if it turned out well enough that I would consider making some more, if people were interested.

Anyway, the pics! I just finished it this morning!!!

"Three-One-Oh Hip Bag"

Don't know what the price would be yet because I'm still trying to gauge interest & locate the best deals for materials, but...

I've been thinking $60-$70 would probably be appropriate, and the buyer would also have the choice to choose the section of vinyl they wanted for the exterior (also similar to Freitag). I have a tiny selection of vinyl now, but I'm hoping to get some more soon.
