This just in from the O.C. Register.
I cycle this spot a lot, but I like to stay on the bike lane in the street. The seperated bike path is often full of walkers and runners. That said, if I wanted to be really safe from cars, the bike path is the place to be 99.999% of the time.
HUNTINGTON BEACH – Two cars southbound on Pacific Coast Highway crashed and flipped, hitting a bicycle rider, shortly before 8:16 a.m. Sunday, authorities said.
The bicycle rider and one driver were taken to the hospital with serious injuries, while the other driver was treated and released at the scene, authorities said.
The two cars crashed near Pacific Coast Highway and Seapoint Avenue, tumbling down an embankment and onto a trail, where the bicyclist was riding, said Lt. Brian Tidrick of the Huntington Beach Police Department.

LA I'm fine with, but biking in the OC scares the crap out of me. Perhaps it's the combination of wide roads and car drivers that seem to be hyper-empowered to think they can go reeeeeeally fast on them. Dread it. Worst part of the trip from LA to SD is through the OC--can't wait to hit that southern border.

Thats on the freakish side of things.
And the person who got hurt just happened to be on a bike, spring-walkers, runners, rollerbladers, and everybody else uses that popular beach path. If its is where I think it is, there is a fence and about 10-15' of space between the highway and the beach path.

No fence at that spot, but at least 15 feet and a bluff separating the "bike" path from PCH.
This was a freakish "perfect storm" for TWO cars to roll onto that trail.
