Wasted: Life in an age of excess
This short documentary includes footage of a L.A. Dumpster Ride from a few months ago. The ride starts in Highland Park and takes us to Smart and Final and Trader Joes in Glendale.
The community meal shown was the one the followed the ride when we cooked up some of the food we rescued.
Four of us got charged with unauthorized removal of trash in South Pasadena. This was not during a dumpster ride however. There has been some occasions where we ran into security on the ride (not usually), and the security would ask us to leave.
South Pasadena has an ordinance that makes it illegal to remove trash without authorization. I don't think most places around Los Angeles have such an ordinance. Pasadena and Los Angeles do not. I've run into Police in Pasadena while dumpster diving and they didn't really care about removal of trash.
That was the only citation in the last 2+ years of dumpster diving.
Way back when, I worked at Pizza Man in Pomona.
When someone didn't pick up a pizza, we always ate it!
We never, ever threw one out.
Now, I make art from old junk I find, sometimes in dumpsters. What a silly law which prevents people from recycling anything rather than letting it go to a landfill.
