I actually do have fenders and a shell, but I can think of several reasons for not to ride in the rain. As soon as a drop of rain hits their windshield, a lot of Angelinos forget how to drive. I would not mind having a little more metal around me when this happens. If you happen to be riding to work or school, you will be quite soaked which means you will have to pack another set of clothes, and change, and have somewhere for your wet clothes to dry or a place to put them. I also have a tendency to get sick when I ride in the rain. I really can't afford to be sick right now. It is pretty fun through once you get over the fact that you'll be wet. Also you aren't stuck in the unavoidable gridlock as these idiots figure out how to drive. Did I mention assholes can't drive in the rain? Because I generally dislike being wet and cold, I only ride in the rain when I really, really have to. On the other hand, as a cyclist it does feel good to be prepared and willing to ride when no one else is.

"RAIN CANCELS" just means you're a) a pussy, b) unprepared, or c) both. it's just water. grab a poncho and pedal on.

on that note, what can we do to prepare?
what's your favorite tips to riding in the rain w/o feeling miserable?
i wish i had glasses with windshield wipers on them so i could see. the rain makes me blind.

fenders made of anything plastic and a 99 cent store rain poncho. and tights. cuz they're thin enough to dry off. or just ride naked and put yer clothes on when u get there.

riding in the rain is super fun. invest in a shell and rainpants.
chynna, for the glasses problem if you wear a cycling hat under your helmet, the visor helps keep a lot of rain off the lenses. some rain shells have the visor too.

f'real, I was with you and it was barely sprinkling. That doesn't even count.
...was a pretty nice ride, though.

OK, I'm with you on a lot of this but fuck riding bikes with a poncho. A good shell doesn't cost that much if you get it on sale and won't flap all over the place.
A prominent cyclist of my acquaintance has mentioned to me several times that she wants to put on a ride where the policy is the opposite of "rain cancels." If it doesn't rain, there's no ride. We'll see if she does it...

A couple of new things I've got to add to the shopping list.
I just wish the shells were all black with reflective strips in subtle areas, getting tired of all these flamboyant color schemes they keep putting on them.

Anything that doesn't give you away is fine with me.
I intend to use for cycling and non-cycling purposes.
Then there's still the issue of shoe-covers only being made for cleats, not all of us use or want to use cleats.

I Rivendell just started making some non-cleat shoe covers but they look goofy as fuck IMO. "Musa Splats" they call them.

By strategic timing, I was able to ride 7.5 miles to day without getting hardly wet at all! And it felt good!
It really is the glasses issue, more than anything else, that makes riding in the rain a drag.
