sup guys! i was wondering where i could get a good fixed gear bike in the LA area. budget is pretty minor. so if you guys could, please post links to websites and or shops you guys know of in the area. Also can you guys post brands and models to? right now i have a 24 speed fuji newest but i think i need a fixie for rides. Thanks

J/K hey go to www.bikesdirect.com look under the road bike section scroll down to the track bikes.. I picked up a Windsor hour complete track bike (my new polo bike) On that site for $299 out the door including shipping !!

I was going to do the build it myself route, and the budget for doing a cheap frame up build of an old road bike came out to about the same as the Motobecane Messenger I bought off bikesdirect. (Yes, it's Taiwanese, not French like the original Motobecanes, but that's a good thing, for a whole variety of reasons. It's also apparently the same frame as a Fuji Track, but with brake braze-ons and brakes.)
A light chromoly frame, a wheelset strong enough to hold my substantial self up without buckling, truvativ cranks, flip-flop hub, etc., etc. for $349.99 delivered is a pretty good deal. It will take a couple of hours at the bikerowave / bike oven / bike kitchen to get everything built up / tightened / trued, but it's still a bargain
If you've got a road bike already though, you can get a fixed/track rear wheel for about $90-100, do the math and figure out what size cog you need, and run it off your existing chainring.

I have the utmost respect for fixed gears and the people who can ride them well.
My beef is with the trend riding such bikes has become. No offense to anyone. I have a beef with all trends. Its a sickness.

Actually, you could do what I just did.
I went to Performance and picked up a cheap-ass singlespeed for $200. Complete bike. It's kind of weird, it looks like a track bike frame but riding it feels like riding a BMX. Then again this is the first bike I've rode without derailleurs.
Gave it a good road test on Eddie's DTLA ride on Friday night then rode home to Pasadena in the rain and it held up well.
It's an SE Draft. I think once I put my old cranks and SPD pedals on it I'll have a sweet bike for ridazz rides and commuting. The whole no gears thing is kinda fun. You just GO.

There are just two problems with the SE Draft for someone who wants a fixie:
1 - The frame is Hi-Ten steel, which is both heavier and weaker than Chromoly, which isn't ideal.
2 - The rear hub is freewheel only, which means if you want to ride fixed, you then have to go and blow $90-100+ getting a track rear wheel/cog/lockring.
If you want a $200 singlespeed, it's not a bad choice, but if you want a cheap fixie, it's not the best choice.
