I've gone geocaching in 4 different states and its a lot of fun. I'd recommend using a proper handheld GPS unless your phone has a distance-to-location-desired feature in feet/meters. And there are tons of caches (big & small) all over LA. Or, the organizers could create some of their own for others to find.

OMG i love geocaching, and everyone always makes fun of me when i get excited about it. i mentioned a geocaching themed bike ride to my friend and totally got laughed at. but ya that would be so much fun -- though you'd totally attract muggles.

I can totally see 300+ riders all crowding around the tiny micro-cache vial by the Rabbit in BH. Attract attention? No chance. LOL.
Also, i bet the non-cyclist who creates a cache will be surprised to find 300 signatures in the log book! Too funny! Or if 300+ riders left a bike valve cap in the container.

though having 300+ riders and jump ropers might be advantageous because people would think, "oh, just a bunch of crazies crawling around and climbing shit...whatevers."
it's so awesome to think of all the caches we pass by every day, and i wish there were a way to pitch geocaching to people in a way that could do justice to how awesome it is instead of making it seem completely dorky. i haven't really figured it out yet except for explaining it as an "international treasure hunt," but then people ask "so what's the treasure?" and i'm like, "uhh, a container with a piece of paper in it and maybe some coins". also it doesn't help that cache sounds like "cash," and so when people find out there's no money involved, they laugh.
BUT IT'S STILL SO MUCH FUN! i remember hiking in north carolina and just thinking of geocaching off-hand, and there happened to be 3 of them located on the very trail i was gonna visit that very day. ahhh i love it. damn i need to replace the batteries in my GPS and go geocaching soon!

How much does a hand held GPS cost? Any recommendations?

They are around 80-100 bucks for the basic ones and that is really all you need for geo-caching. You might be able to find one for a little less or maybe through ebay, etc.

they can go from mid $80s and up depending on the features and all that. mine was around $95 and it's sufficient for geocaching. before i had a GPS i used google earth which works for the easier caches, but is frustrating if you want to find others of mediocre difficulty.

Sorry I laughed at the idea when you first told me, I would be down for it now that I know how fun it can be to create treasure for others to find at the cache

Hey, so sometime in October, I'd like to do a geocaching ride for
The Passage of a Few People Through a Rather Brief Moment in Time. I'm actually thinking of setting up a new cache on the ride. Ridazz Cache!
Of course, I don't have a GPS or GPS-enabled phone, which could make planning the ride slightly more difficult, but I'm sure I can figure something out. Any suggestions for neat caches to visit within, say, 10 miles of our
starting point?
