BENTSTRIDER

03.24.11

What’s your name (optional) and/or your Midnight Ridazz log-in name?
Bentstrider, and some have called me Adam for some unknown reason(whomever that person is).

How did you first hear about Midnight Ridazz and what was your first group bike ride?
In 2004-2005, I began perusing this other "forum" when I began to ride my bicycle to work after stopping completely in '02.

I thought it was just a whole bunch of pish-posh, hoo-hah, until I had to pick up a load of toilet paper in Las Vegas on July 12, 2007. The load did not have to be in Ft Worth, TX until the 16th of that month, so I took my time and rode around Vegas for a few days on the folding MTB I kept in my cab until I felt it necessary to roll out.

Anywho, I rode downtown to go to the gym, then watch that pirate show at Treasure Island, then get something to eat before heading out on the Friday night of July 13, 2007.
After getting two of the things on my list done, I waited for the gathered crowd at the TI to scatter, then headed south on Vegas Blvd.

As I sliced through the prototypical Friday night Vegas traffic, I spied a couple of taillights up ahead. Thinking these were those vendors passing out those triple-X fliers, I paid them no mind until I got past some more cars and BAM!!!!

The endless sea of taillight blinkies brought me into another world I never thought actually existed. There, I joined up with these guys and practically stayed/rode with them until 5AM when I finally decided that I had to break away and head back to my semi at the truckstop at Blue Diamond HWY.

However, I was thoroughly introduced to the ridazz I would come to know as LaHarr420, RichtotheIE, Fuzzbeast, EricHair, SPiralDemon(they kept referencing him like he had fur), BigBikeDan, and a whole host of others I would come to know as regulars in my field of vision.

Currently what rides do you attend regularly and what ride(s) would you like to see make a comeback?
-I live in the desert lands of Victorville/Hesperia/Apple Valley and public transit/bike trails are somewhat dicey traversing the 100+ mile distance between here and the LA Basin.

In the meantime, I try to make it down to whatever ride happens to be locked and loaded(chock full of nice-sized crowds and a moderately chill speed). Taco Tuesdays and the monthly Barchopzz fit this bill.

As for rides that I would like to see comeback, anything that fit the vein of classic CruzzWithUs and CRANK Mob style rides, essentially the 1,000+ people rides I was first exposed to.

What advice would you pass on to new ridazz?
Ride safe and straight, don't let "them" catch you, and this is not a race, go to Wolfpack you clutz!!

If you were leading a group ride, what would you do differently?
Zero store stops, utilization of ridazz vendors for food/beverage supply, and large rides that are slow enough, yet able to get to far-off places outside of city-limits.

Do you prefer small rides (30 or less people) or larger rides and why?
Large ones, I was first exposed to it and nothing will change that. Also, the "potential-for-chaos" factor brings order to my brain.

Tell us about the best and worst experience you’ve encountered on a group ride.
Best experience would be a bonfire on a Robotz ride back in Sept '08.

Worst was the June '09 CRANK Mob where everyone got scared of the cops and ran, causing more reason for them to tail us.
Fuckin' kids, stand your ground!!(With dignity of course)

What did you do for fun before you started “riding”?
Played PS2/3 and XBox type of games over at my friends house(before he moved back east) because I was too broke to buy my own and too full of pride to ask mommy and daddy for one.
Apart from that, rode by myself, and whatever I could afford to do with what pennies I made.

What’s the best and worst thing group bike rides have done for cycling as a whole in Los Angeles?
Brought cycling to the limelight and to the general public eye. Essentially telling average Joe Blows and Janes that you didn't have to be Lance Armstrong, or that Contador fella to ride a bicycle.

Negative would be portraying everyone as drunken idiots out to start some drama, especially the wannabe racers crashing and burning due to varying effects of various substances.

If you can name 1 person who embodies the spirit of “Midnight Ridazz”, Who would it be and Why?
While the originators of this fine, "whatever you want to call it", will never lose their luster, many more will rise up to the join the ranks of the embodiment we've come to know.

It's unwritten and ever-changing.

What do you think the public’s perception is of group bike rides?
Mixed bag.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Not right now, but you'll never know with this talking head.
