Coaster Brake Challenge
Thread started by rev106 at 11.24.09 - 9:12 am

Greetings!

Here we have ANOTHER coaster Brake Challenge on our hands soon! Will Dingo retain his title? Will Parlorbikes not crash? Will Chickenleather not loose his chain? We don't know. yet.

I'd like to set an open challenge to all the other groups of riders that ride fast in LA to come join us. Wolfpack, Bicyikillers, Mountainerzz etc. Let's se what you've got, come to the 818 for some hard pedaling fun. I'm throwing down the gauntlet, will you pick it up? It would be great!

Below are the rules and a write up from the last race set so you can get a feel for things if you're thinking in joining.

Purpose:

To have fun, to race, to sweat, breathe hard, to ride hard, to challenge ones self. This is the anti-race race. Don't kid yourself it's hard, you may crash or puke (or both) but we are down for the fun and camaraderie more than the podium. Well, there is no podium but I think you get the point.

We will be hosting 4 Sunday races in the month of January. Each race will have a meet point at 7am and race at 8am. Most races will be short 1 to 2 hour affairs. Meet points and descriptions of each race will be posted so you know what to expect. If you want you can go check out the courses ahead of time, not that you need to but if your really need to know you can.

This race series is open to all comers. Men, women, kids, we don't discriminate. Come with a smile and leave with a smile (and perhaps an impressive scar.)

Race dates: January 3rd, 10th, 17th, &24th.

A note on races:

Spectators:

Some of these races are fun to watch and can be easily accessible for speciation. On a scale of 1-10, 10 being best the ability to spectate will be rated.

Meat Pylons:

We're not the only ones out there people, so you will need to yield to horses and peds as best you can. The higher the number, the more Meat Pylons you'll have to deal with. Ride safe and be respectful of others. On cold days, expect the number to be lower. It should be cold. Bring water, you'll need it.

Rules for bikes:

Gearing:

Single speed only. No internal geared hubs (sturmey-archer, bendix two speed kick backs etc.) no derailleur of any kind (A chain tensioner is fine but not recommended). No external gearing. No gears. No fixed gear. Each race will be different from the last and you may want a different gear ratio for each race and you can have any gear ratio you wish. We have found that 30-36 in the front and 18-22 in the back is the range best suited for this event, see what works best for you.

Drive system:

The rear hub must be a coaster brake. Single speed coaster brake only. No two-speed kick backs, etc (I know what they look like) Some coaster brakes are better than others, do your homework and get a good one. See below for more info. Cranks of any kind may be used as well as pedals.

Braking system:

Coaster brake only on the rear wheel only. No hand brakes of any kind. No secondary braking system of any kind. No drum brakes, no cables, rods, levers, etc of any kind. You pedal forward to go forward and back to stop. Nothing else.

Frame:

Preference for old double bar cruisers but there are no frame restrictions. We have found that cruiser frames and lower end frames with a horizontal dropouts work the best. Frames with a rigid dropout are difficult to get proper chain tension. We recommend the following types of bikes:

Single speed mountain bikes

Pros: take new bike goodies well

Cons: Can be costly

Cruisers

Pros: Cheap and look cool too!

Cons: Don't take mountain bikes goodies like threadless forks etc. Most have 1 piece cranks.

Any 26" bike that has a horizontal drop out.

Pros: Older Mountain bikes are cheap and plentiful and easily adapt to our purpose.

Cons: None really, an ideal choice for this event.

Forks:

Any.

Wheels/tires:

You can have any kind of hoop/tire combo. I suggest a light wheelset that you've laced a coaster brake into. Something rugged is good, I've done each race with cheap alloy cruiser rims, they have held up fine thus far.

Handlebars etc.

Everything else is left up to the individual rider

The Write up:

The Coaster Brake Challenge rules are simple: no handbrakes, coaster brake only, and single speed only. Harking back to mountain biking’s inception, the CBC strives to keep things simple, your whole rig for this event should cost less than one hydraulic brake. Part of the challenge was to build a bike that could take miles of hard use that would hold up to the different terrains and speeds that the CBC would pit it against. The other part of the challenge was to relinquish the dependency on things like long travel forks, disc brakes, carbon fiber etc. these things were replaced with steel, rust, and low buck thrills. To ride again for the simple fun of it. The bikes that people brought to the event ran the gamut of stripped down beach cruisers, neutered single speeds and mountain bikes devoid of all the original parts and a few other kinds of bikes re-purposed for the race. The series if comprised of four different courses that will test bike and rider in different ways, giving each a chance to shine. Each rider earns a point for starting the race and place finishers earn more points for a total points winner at the end of the series. Most people are in it for fun though but everyone gives it their best.
Race one of the season was a two mile loop that we raced 5 times. The loop consisted of technical single track through streambeds, rock gardens, shoulder high weeds and sandy banks. There was a small amount of climbing and some tricky descents to keep everyone on their toes. We had 19 starters in this first race with a few people who gassed out, broke their bikes, or themselves. Most people finished and everyone had a good time. Several riders had trouble keeping their chains on the bike and a flat took the leader out of action. In an event like this, attrition is part of the game. Since you’re relying on sub-standard technology for the task at hand, you have to control your speed, and control your skidding if you want to finish the race in one piece. After five laps and ten hard miles on full rigid bikes and old klunkers we had about 10 of the 19 starters finishing the race.
Race two was an out and back again sort of affair starting at the top of a park and descending to the bottom of some rolling hills. The decent was tricky as there were drop-offs that creeped up on you suddenly and being that you only had a coaster brake to rely on to control your speed it could be perilous. Once you reached the bottom there was what we called “The Malaria Pit”; a 30-foot long mire of black mud that smelled like a porta potty at a Judas Priest concert. The goo that was in this bog was about knee deep and sticky like jelly preserves but with none of its sweetness. Now, the discerning racer would notice a small sign before the Pit the said “Trail” with an arrow pointing to the left. A small section of single track would get you around the Pit and back on the trail without out that oh so unfresh feeling. Some of the racers made it through and some did not, and you could smell the difference. The leader at the end forgot to apply the brakes and crashed into the map kiosk, ringing his bell. Being that it was in the 90’s a few of the racers overheated and had to take a while to cool down, you could feel the LA sunshine burning through your helmet on the climb back for sure. One of the racers managed to get lost and after we went looking for him to no avail, he was holed up at some ranch where he had phoned home like E.T. But we cannot fly so we had to pick him up at some other corner of civilization, the time was 10:00 pm, we started the race at 5:30.
The third race was very akin to cyclocross. The loop was about 4/10th of a mile and you had to do 15 laps. We called it the Filthy 15. About 2/3 of the course had a deceptively difficult uphill and the rest being a bomb that you had to share sections with other racers. There were sandy patches to challenge the rider as well as hard sand stone for some bumps and rutts to keep one on their toes. We had a greatly diminished pack this time, mostly due to the 100+ degree heat that is commonplace in the San Fernando Valley during this time of year. The course was tucked between a freeway and a couple main roads and train tracks in a tiny valley that made sure we’d get no relief from a cross breeze. True to form, a rider on a modified 29er got caught in a rut on the first turn and biffed it. We asked if he was ok and a gurgled “yeah!” came from his mouth as he untangled himself from the wreckage, so much for technology. After lap one, you were tired, by lap 5 you wondered how many more you had to go as the sun drilled holes through your helmet and dust filled your mouth. By the race end half the pack had dropped out. Even though this was the shortest course in the series, the extraneous factors made it one of the more grueling races out of the four.

The final race was over 10 miles long and involved 4 long climbs. The pack spread out very quickly on this one as the heat and hills tool their toll on bikes and rider. The entire course was on well-used fire road, so there were a few sections full of sand and shale that grabbed your front wheel and made it do things you didn’t want it to do. The course was laid out so you had to descend, then climb, then descend and then climb back to the start, from there you had to climb and then descend and then climb to the final point and then do the last half again. Now on a bicycle with gears, or even a single speed with hand brakes you can do this run if you’re mildly fit. Being that you only had your coaster brake to rely on for braking, you had to approach some of the steeper descents with more caution lest you wind up in the bushes. There were several close duels for 1st through 4th place, the leaders kept changing and while we would loose sight of each other around some bends in the road, you’d see everyone collect on a steep section. The other interesting aspect was the positive response from strangers. We had several joggers that gave us the thumbs up or words of encouragement, and the regular cyclists were put on the side of the trail with their jaws slackened in awe. “Was that guy riding a Huffy?” one surprised biker said as the point leader passed them on a hill on their full suspension rigs. Yes, it was a Huffy; sometimes it’s all you need to have a blast.

paul, my ss mtb uses a tensioner because of the dropouts. why isn't it recommended to use a coaster hub with a tensioner?

@ Craig

Your bike will fit in just perfect. There once was a rider who showed up with a custom Rawland steel frame with 650b wheels, White Brothers fork, Stan's no tubes the works!!!! This bike was literally eaten by the course and the rider had to walk back in. Lets just say the one of the wheels was not round at the end of the race. His name is Rich and his team won the All City Race. Here he is with the great perfect camera placement on the crash. DOWN WITH STAN'S NO TUBES!!!!!!

I would say my bike is one of the most dialed. I run a Marin Drakes Beach alloy cruiser frame, steel stock fork. I paid $80 for it then replaced just about everything but the frame, fork, and a few other items. I installed some $5 BBQ high temp flat paint, retaining some of the stock decals in the panel scheme I masked on it. I put on some Shimano cheap cranks and a bash gaurd. Replaced the headset, seatpost, saddle, and some other things with gucci parts.

Steel frames are common, I ran a Chigao Schwinn last time and took 5th.6th, 2nd and 4th in the races so while a higer end bike may give you some small adavntage, it's the rider mostly.

I run a 36/19 for my gearing, seems about right for most courses.

The guy who won the whole thing last time did it on a huffy, so don't freak on high end junk.

I'm building a purpose built bike for this race simply beacuse I got tired of stripping my single speed down and losing the brakes. + I'm a bike dork and couldn't resist the urge. It's a chro-mo giant iguana that I welded bmx dropouts on, we'll see how it does.

Most of the courses I've selected are moderate at best, they can be a little grueling due to length and when you race, you'll push yourself harder than you would on a regular ride. Every course can be done with a coaster brake only, a skilled rider should never have to get off thier bike.

Regarding chain tension, I think that over-tensioning the rear wheel on a coaster brake is one reason Chicken Leather kept losing his chain last time around (the challenge prior to this one).

I've since given the chains a bit more slack and found that the drive train responds much better to that.

There is supposed to be some play in the rear cog, and when you over-tension the chain, it puts the cog at an angle. Under these conditions, when pedaling hard, the chain will slip.

I use the tensioners to take any drooping out of the chain, but maintain at least a 1/2" of play (it cannot be bow string tight I have learned) up and down.

Won't those fail under a hard rear brake maneuver? The tension in the chain is on the bottom portion when you're rocking a coaster brake and you start using it to stop. If that does hold up, and improve performance I'd really like to try one out on my bikes.

WE SHALL SEE!

WE RACE RAIN OR SHINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Race #3 Nature Walk Through Hell.

(Note the meet point has been moved to the one below)

Cafe Donuts

19362 Rinaldi St.

Northridge CA 91326

(corner of Tampa & Rinaldi)

Spectators 7

Meat Pylons 6

Each lap is about 2 miles long & should take 20-30 minutes to complete, we'll do five laps. There are a few technical, steep but very short accents and a couple mildly technical, steep but very short descents on the trail. There are a couple spots where you go down and come right back up again, this course involves the most bike handling skills out of the set. You'll have to watch your downhill speed as the trail runs adjacent to a stream bed and falling 5 feet or so onto some rocks will really suck. You can build up some serious speed down hill and then have to make a hard left next to a stream or fall off into the rocks. There's also a low lying tree over the trail at one point so you'll need to duck or you'll knock yourself out. Once you get to the top of the trail head on Sesnon, then you'll make a left on the single track adjacent to the sidewalk and go back down the trail until you join back up with the main trail. Once you get to the start you'll climb the paved hill and then take the single track to the right. This completes a lap. You'll be sharing the course with all the other racers going up and coming down, so pay attention. Don't get off the trial at any time, if you do this means you're not on track. Most of the trail is mild climbing, and some tricky descending, but is deceptively difficult as you will see when you run it.

See you then!

total milage was around 19 miles.hard, dangerous, hiker infested miles.wolfpack rich got first,i got second and flying pigeon charlie got third i think.
chicken leather tacoed his front wheel ,somehow straightened it out on the trail and finished somewhere around 7 or eighth.
paul said next week will include some kiddie bike racing, after the regular race, for the top ten finishers so it should be a spectator friendly event.

Never have cramped up like I did on this one....jesus. so freaking long this race was. Indeed a trip through HELL.

I can't really commit to every month type of thing, I have to wedge this in amongst all the other crap I do, so for now it will stay like it is. I have 36 sign ups and about a 50% attrition rate which is pretty high, so we'll make any changes if need be when the numbers get higher. I also don't want divisions because it will just turn into another mountain bike race. Well there aren't any races out here but I'd be down to do a single/speed or coaster ride on a more regular basis. It would be really cool of someone else put it on (wink wink) I can't go to every event however. Part of the challenge is showing up to every race and doing your best for yourself.

Other ideas I have:

Vintage mountain bike race. No suspension, 21 speeds max etc.

$99 mountain bike race. A bone stock department store klunker with no mods what so ever, your recipt would be your entry fee. Once the race is over, you return the bike.

Figure 8 race. Also a blast, could have some amazing wrecks.

Single speed mtb race. Rich and I are working on this one, were thinking a Monday on a three day weekend out in his neck ofthe woods (Lancaster).

Anyway, I don't have time to do them all but I'd like to do more ride on the dirt.

Coaster / Vintage Fun ride ?

Reseda to the Sea.

This was one of the very 1st mtn bike race held back in 1980
It started at Reseda and Ventura blvd. and ended at Palisades dr. and Sunset blvd.
This race was promoted by the legend Victor Vicente of America.
Team Richey even came down to compete along with other Nor Cal riders.
Local legend and team Ross rider Arron Cox won this race twice.

This race was traditionally held on the 1st Sunday in March

How about a fun ride on that date to celebrate 30 years of mtn riding in our area.

The race always ended with beer drinking and a pot luck feast.
